Big Bash League, Adelaide Strikers v Brisbane Heat at Adelaide, Dec 13, 2012
Brisbane Heat won by 3 wickets (with 0 balls remaining)
Played at Adelaide Oval
13 December 2012 - night match (20-over match)

Hello all. Welcome to ESPNcricinfo's commentary for the Strikers v Heat game. Both teams have played one game each, Adelaide won their fixture, but Heat are still looking to get off the mark in the BBL.

Thrilled to bits to see Johan Botha - one of my favourite limited overs cricketers - in charge of the Strikers. Brisbane have won the toss and will be fielding. Michael Klinger and James Smith are the openers. "Tonight's gonna be a good night," the PA system informs me. Nathan Hauritz to start off proceedings with spin. Here we go..

Hauritz to Smith, 1 run, tossed up on off stump, worked to the leg side for a single.

Hauritz to Klinger, no run, back of a length, hint of spin towards leg and Klinger nudges to leg.

Hauritz to Klinger, 1 wide, a wide down the leg side now. Haury clearly is looking to keep it tight on middle and leg.

Hauritz to Klinger, 1 run, straight again, works a full ball through midwicket for one.

Hauritz to Smith, no run, this time he tosses one up well outside off, and it is driven hard to cover.

Hauritz to Smith, no run, Smith looks to drive through the off side again, but can't get power or placement into the shot.

Hauritz to Smith, 1 run, Hauritz off to a good start, full on middle stump and gets driven to long on for one.

End of over 1 (4 runs) Adelaide Strikers 4/0

    • JD Smith 2 (4b)
    • M Klinger 1 (2b)
    • NM Hauritz 1-0-4-0

Alister McDermott gets the second over. Can crank it up. Like father, like son. Slip in place.

McDermott to Smith, no run, straight ball on middle, kept on a length, Klinger punches defensively to the leg side. He is trying to get forward .

McDermott to Smith, 1 run, moves the line outside off this time, Klinger defends into the off side.

McDermott to Klinger, OUT, Gone! Klinger's had enough of waiting for a bad ball. He chose to charge out of the crease and thwack a ball that wasn't there for the drive into the off side. Doesn't work, he hits it flat and straight to mid-off, who does well to cling on with fingers pointing upwards.

M Klinger c Pomersbach b McDermott 1 (3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

Tim Ludeman comes in at 3.

McDermott to Ludeman, 1 run, 137 kph, McDermott thuds it in back of a length, and it is pushed nervously to the leg side.

McDermott to Smith, 1 run, Tight single. Pomesbach in business again. Smith drove it into the off side and took off. He had to sprint in. Despite a clean throw, Pomesbach couldn't hit the stumps.

McDermott to Ludeman, SIX, Welcome to the Big Bash Golf League. Ludeman tees off in style. Gets half forward to a full length ball and murders it over midwicket. Clean hit.

End of over 2 (9 runs) Adelaide Strikers 13/1

    • TP Ludeman 7 (2b 1x6)
    • JD Smith 4 (7b)
    • AC McDermott 1-0-9-1
    • NM Hauritz 1-0-4-0

Dan Christian comes on. Bowling change already.

Christian to Smith, 1 run, full length ball to start off, just outside off and it is guided behind square for one.

Christian to Ludeman, 2 runs, over-pitched, slipping down the leg side and Ludeman whips it cleanly behind square. He rockets across the stumps then to complete two. He has 9 off 3.

Christian to Ludeman, 2 runs, too straight from Dan C. Ludeman works it industriously for more runs on the leg side.

Christian to Ludeman, no run, better line, full and probing on off and middle, Ludeman drives cleanly towards mid-off.

Christian to Ludeman, no run, back of a length outside off, Ludeman covers the line and defends without conviction as the ball nips away just a bit. Good delivery.

Christian to Ludeman, SIX, boy, he can smash 'em over the leg side. Don't bowl straight to this man. Ludeman reaches out and heaves a full length ball over long-on. That hit the middle of the middle of his bat.

End of over 3 (11 runs) Adelaide Strikers 24/1

    • TP Ludeman 17 (7b 2x6)
    • JD Smith 5 (8b)
    • DT Christian 1-0-11-0
    • AC McDermott 1-0-9-1

McDermott to Smith, OUT, McD has his man! Again, it is that nagging length that's not there for the drive. McDermott also gets it to nip in subtly off the seam. Smith didn't account for the movement and ended up inside edging, and it barely carries low to the keeper.

JD Smith c †Hartley b McDermott 5 (9b 0x4 0x6) SR: 55.55

Ferguson is the new man in. I'll never understand why this man isn't playing for Australia.

McDermott to Ferguson, no run, nice length, Ferguson gets back and across and plays watchfully into the off side.

McDermott to Ferguson, 2 runs, and he's away, plastering a back of length ball outside the off stump into the off side. Such a fluid batsman.

McDermott to Ferguson, no run

McDermott to Ferguson, SIX, oh hello, someone tell these guys they can score runs in 4s as well! Ferguson gets one in the slot, angling in from outside off into the stumps and he whips it with immense power. Not much of a follow through - wasn't required. The ball disappeared over midwicket.

McDermott to Ferguson, no run, better line, shorter length outside off and it is blocked to the off side.

End of over 4 (8 runs) Adelaide Strikers 32/2

    • CJ Ferguson 8 (5b 1x6)
    • TP Ludeman 17 (7b 2x6)
    • AC McDermott 2-0-17-2
    • DT Christian 1-0-11-0

Ben Cutting comes on.

Cutting to Ludeman, 1 run, ooh, tight single. Direct hit would have ended his stay. Pushed to mid-on for a quick one, the fielder picked up cleanly but couldn't hit. Ludeman scurries to safety.

Cutting to Ferguson, 1 run, short ball, Ferguson stays on the back foot and nudges to the leg side.

Cutting to Ludeman, OUT, Ludeman's short and sweet stay is over. Not the best choice of stroke as he looks to stay on the front foot and fly-swat a short, sharp delivery over the leg side. The top edge is inevitably taken, and the catch loops tamely into mid-on's hands.

TP Ludeman c Hauritz b Cutting 18 (9b 0x4 2x6) SR: 200.00

Nathan Reardon comes in. He is in some form.

Cutting to Ferguson, no run, Ferguson backs away to make room outside off, but can't create enough to power a tight delivery into the off side.

Cutting to Ferguson, no run, Ferguson wanders to the off side now, ends up getting too close to the short ball outside off and can't time the cut shot away.

After watching Trott and KP nurdle away on a turgid pitch in Nagpur, it is fair to say that this looks like a completely different sport. Shot-a-ball from the Strikers

Cutting to Ferguson, 1 run, and again.. Short and wide of off stump, Ferguson looks to carve generously over the off side, and gets a single as the ball loops and drops short of deep backward point.

End of over 5 (3 runs) Adelaide Strikers 35/3

    • CJ Ferguson 10 (9b 1x6)
    • NJ Reardon 0 (0b)
    • BCJ Cutting 1-0-3-1
    • AC McDermott 2-0-17-2

James Hopes brings himself on.

Hopes to Ferguson, 1 run, good length ball on middle, worked to the leg side.

Hopes to Reardon, no run, rubbing my eyes in disbelief. Did Reardon just shoulder arms outside off? #2012

Hopes to Reardon, 1 run, short ball at 124 kph, didn't seem to come on at all. Reardon slaps to the leg side for a single.

Hopes to Ferguson, 3 runs, slower ball again, but slipping down the leg side this time. Ferguson deftly skips inside the line and nudges it down to fine leg for one.

Hopes to Reardon, no run, fuller length, draws Reardon forward and he drives it back to the bowler. Hopes fields in his follow through.

Hopes to Reardon, no run, fuller and a touch wider. Shades of Stephen Fleming as Reardon leans and drives cautiously into the covers.

End of over 6 (5 runs) Adelaide Strikers 40/3

    • NJ Reardon 1 (4b)
    • CJ Ferguson 14 (11b 1x6)
    • JR Hopes 1-0-5-0
    • BCJ Cutting 1-0-3-1

Powerplay overs done and dusted. Adelaide will believe they've lost at least one wicket too many. Hauritz is back on, with the field falling back.

Hauritz to Ferguson, FOUR, oh, lovely stroke! Hauritz drops a drifter marginally short, Ferguson sees it skid smoothly onto his bat as he rocks back and cuts through the covers for the first four of the day.

Hauritz to Ferguson, 1 run, loopy at 86 kph outside off, Ferguson stays back and works it with the spin to the leg side for one.

Round the stumps to the left hander.

Hauritz to Reardon, no run, that drifted in as well, Reardon didn't have the room to cut but committed to the shot. Couldn't quite get it away.

Hauritz to Reardon, 1 run, fuller and on the toes, worked off the front foot towards midwicket

Hauritz to Ferguson, no run, short and quicker, Ferguson is late on the cut and misses.

Hauritz to Ferguson, 1 run, single driven down the ground to end the over.

End of over 7 (7 runs) Adelaide Strikers 47/3

    • CJ Ferguson 20 (15b 1x4 1x6)
    • NJ Reardon 2 (6b)
    • NM Hauritz 2-0-11-0
    • JR Hopes 1-0-5-0

Pictures of the Adelaide Oval's reconstruction being shown on TV. Hope the new-look ground is just as pretty. Christian is back on.

Christian to Ferguson, 1 run, full delivery, an offcutter... Driven to long off for one.

Christian to Reardon, FOUR, Reardon loots four. Short ball from round the stumps, angling into the leg side and Reardon pulls sweetly behind square to send the ball packing.

Christian to Reardon, no run, slow offcutter at 112 kph, Reardon gets forward and defends.

Christian to Reardon, no run, similar delivery, nifty variations these. Reardon plays it back to the bowler.

Christian to Reardon, no run, three in three. Holds the length back this time. Reardon has no pace to work with and plays to the off side.

Christian to Reardon, no run, and again. Reardon pokes it into the off side as the ball grips and stops.

End of over 8 (5 runs) Adelaide Strikers 52/3

    • NJ Reardon 6 (11b 1x4)
    • CJ Ferguson 21 (16b 1x4 1x6)
    • DT Christian 2-0-16-0
    • NM Hauritz 2-0-11-0

Hauritz to Ferguson, 1 run, full delivery from Hauritz, played in front of square for a single.

Hauritz to Reardon, 1 run, tossed up on leg stump, worked off the pads to the leg side.

Hauritz to Ferguson, 1 run, slow through the air and generously flighted. Heaved to the leg side without much timing.

Hauritz to Reardon, no run, Reardon skips out, can't get to the flight. Haury held it back quite smartly. Defended back to the bowler.

Hauritz to Reardon, FOUR, ouch, that's a release ball. Hauritz fires this down the leg side and Reardon gets comfortably inside the line before lashing behind square for four.

Hauritz to Reardon, SIX, that ruins the over completely. Reardon jumps out and drop-kicks a full ball over midwicket for six.

End of over 9 (13 runs) Adelaide Strikers 65/3

    • NJ Reardon 17 (15b 2x4 1x6)
    • CJ Ferguson 23 (18b 1x4 1x6)
    • NM Hauritz 3-0-24-0

Thisara Perera comes on now... Wait.. Thisara Perera is playing for Brisbane? This is a flat world!

Perera to Ferguson, no run, slower ball outside off, he's good at varying his pace. Defended to the off side.

Perera to Ferguson, no run, does it again. Holds the length back, and Ferg has very little to work with. Blocked to the off side.

Perera to Ferguson, 1 run, back of the hand legcutter, short and slow. Ferguson waits and waits before heaving without timing to the leg side.

Perera to Reardon, 1 run, and gets an inside edge out of Reardon this time, nearly upsets the furniture too before it runs to the leg side for one.

Perera to Ferguson, 1 run, Perera is up to his tricks, and Adelaide can't get him away just yet. Short of a length, tight outside off and Ferguson inner edges an attempted cut to the leg side.

Perera to Reardon, no run, Good start from Perera. Reardon can't get the last ball away. Brisbane have the aces at the moment.

End of over 10 (3 runs) Adelaide Strikers 68/3

    • NJ Reardon 18 (17b 2x4 1x6)
    • CJ Ferguson 25 (22b 1x4 1x6)
    • NLTC Perera 1-0-3-0
    • NM Hauritz 3-0-24-0

Cutting to Ferguson, SIX, Boom! Ferguson has got stuck into that one. Short of a length, he picked the length yesterday and sent it packing into next week. Lovely arc as the white orb disappears over midwicket.

Cutting to Ferguson, 1 run, Cutting keeps it on a length, Ferguson gets a leading edge as he tries to work to leg but no hard done.

Cutting to Reardon, no run, Once again, Reardon tries to cross-bat into the leg side but this time he doesn't make a connection.

Cutting to Reardon, FOUR, he makes amends straight away. Poor from Cutting, short and well outside leg, Reardon lapped it away without a fuss and picked four through fine leg.

Cutting to Reardon, 1 run, better line, forced down the ground for one.

Cutting to Ferguson, SIX, see you later. Full ball on the leg stump, and short square boundaries at Adelaide. The result is six as Ferguson lines it up and flicks with disdain. Insanely good timing.

End of over 11 (18 runs) Adelaide Strikers 86/3

    • CJ Ferguson 38 (25b 1x4 3x6)
    • NJ Reardon 23 (20b 3x4 1x6)

That over could spark Adelaide's charge.

Perera to Reardon, 1 run, short of a length, Reardon miscues a heave to the leg side and nearly lobs a catch in the deep.

Perera to Ferguson, 1 run, slower ball, Perera is getting on Adelaide's nerves with his cutters. Ferguson tries really hard to force it to the leg side but gets only one.

Perera to Reardon, 1 run, too short this time, Reardon skips out of the crease and gets a good hold of it as he pulls, but Perera has protection in the deep.

Perera to Ferguson, 1 run, short and wide at 129 kph, Ferguson could barely reach it. Would've been a wide if he didn't play it.

Perera to Reardon, OUT, Perera strikes! Reardon has scored most of his runs in the leg side, and ends up perishing in that area. Perera bowls a normal delivery this time, full and straight, seam-up. Rearon tries to loft it over midwicket, but it goes higher than he'd have liked and not far enough.

NJ Reardon c Forrest b Perera 25 (23b 3x4 1x6) SR: 108.69

KP is out in Nagpur. KP is in, here in Adelaide. Pollard marches out like he owns the place.

Perera to Ferguson, 1 wide, he gets the wide this time, short and almost outside the tramlines. Ferguson was trying to move to the off side, and Perera over-reacted.

Perera to Ferguson, 1 wide, and again. Another wide. Ferguson's scrambling Perera's line with his footwork.

Perera to Ferguson, 1 run, legcutter, so slow it nearly walked down the pitch. Ferguson tried very hard to get it away, but picks up a single.

End of over 12 (7 runs) Adelaide Strikers 93/4

    • CJ Ferguson 41 (28b 1x4 3x6)
    • KA Pollard 0 (0b)
    • NLTC Perera 2-0-10-1
    • BCJ Cutting 2-0-21-1

Cutting to Ferguson, no run, run out chance goes abegging. The batsman wasn't even in the frame. Ferguson worked it behind point and took off. Pollard wasn't even thinking about it. The throw misses.

Cutting to Ferguson, 1 leg bye, pacy from Cutting! Short ball, Ferguson was late on the pull and is hit on the shoulder. They scramble a legbye.

Haha! Pollard is reluctant to use the 'Zingbail' to mark his guard.

Cutting to Pollard, no run, A proper bumper. Pollard doesn't fancy the bouncer and ducks out of the way late.

Cutting to Pollard, 1 run, on a length this time, Pollard is still stuck on the backfoot and gropes for it from the crease. Single behind point.

Cutting to Ferguson, 1 run, tries the yorker this time, just short of the blockhole. Ferguson manages to work it to the leg side as it swerves in.

Cutting to Pollard, no run, Pollard clearly unsure what to expect. Gets a short ball as he wanders down the pitch, and he can't work it to the leg side.

End of over 13 (3 runs) Adelaide Strikers 96/4

Christian to Ferguson, (no ball) FOUR, horror ball! Attempted back of the hand legcutter goes out of hand (literally and otherwise). Christian ends up looping it waist high and it is slapped through square leg for four. There's more - Dan C has overstepped, so it's a no- ball as well. Free hit coming up.

Free hit coming up.

Christian to Ferguson, 1 run, Full and wide of off, Ferguson looks to go through the leg side but can manage only a single with his heave.

Christian to Pollard, 1 leg bye, length ball, asking to be hit as it angles into the pads. Pollard is late on the glance and misses out.

Christian to Ferguson, 1 run, short and slow. 112 kph, and Ferguson drags it to midwicket for one.

Christian to Pollard, no run, full toss, well wide of off stump and Pollard's drive doesn't beat the man at cover. Went off the toe of the bat.

Christian to Pollard, no run, full and wide of off stump, Pollard again fails to make contact.

Christian to Pollard, 1 run, Very good end to the over. Christian sends down another yorker outside off and Pollard can't get it away.

End of over 14 (9 runs) Adelaide Strikers 105/4

    • KA Pollard 2 (7b)
    • CJ Ferguson 48 (34b 2x4 3x6)
    • DT Christian 3-0-24-0
    • BCJ Cutting 3-0-23-1

Cutting to Pollard, SIX, Pollard power is here! He does put the Bash in Big Bash. Cutting slots it on on a length, Pollard savages it from the crease over wide long-on.

The score is 111, the ball has landed in the construction site.

Cutting to Pollard, 1 run, short ball, didn't come on as quick as Pollard expected. He can't time the pull shot.

Cutting to Ferguson, FOUR, 50 to Ferguson. Doesn't come in the most assertive fashion, as he top-edges a blind lash to the leg side and picks up four through third man. But how well has he played!

Cutting to Ferguson, OUT, He falls immediately after getting to his second BBL 50. Length ball on off, and Ferguson did really well to time it as well as he did. He made room and cracked it cleanly over the off side, but it landed in deep cover's hands.

CJ Ferguson c Hauritz b Cutting 52 (36b 3x4 3x6) SR: 144.44

Botha is in. Pollard faces.

Cutting to Pollard, 1 run, short again, Pollard claps it into the point area for one.

Cutting to Botha, 2 runs, Botha is away with a nervy single.... make that a couple, as he steals an overthrow. Full ball on the stumps, he pushes to mid-off and gets one. A needless throw gives him another run, and Pollard the strike for the next over.

End of over 15 (14 runs) Adelaide Strikers 119/5

    • J Botha 2 (1b)
    • KA Pollard 10 (10b 1x6)
    • BCJ Cutting 4-0-37-2
    • DT Christian 3-0-24-0

McDermott is back on.

McDermott to Pollard, FOUR, poor start! Low full toss on the pads and Pollard whips industriously. Not the best ball to bowl with fine leg inside the ring.

McDermott to Pollard, FOUR, yorker, but no luck going McDermott's way. Perfect delivery just outside off, and Pollard somehow manages to squeeze it off the toe end, and it bounces high and over the keeper's head for four.

McDermott to Pollard, FOUR, three in a row! This time a proper half-volley, Pollard whips muscularly through midwicket and makes it 12 off 3.

McDermott to Pollard, 2 runs, full toss! Pollard tries to blast off down the ground, but doesn't manage to reach the boundary this time. Two more.

McDermott to Pollard, 1 run, pitched up outside off, Pollard cracks it into the covers and sprints... he has to dive in as the throw comes in, but he manages to make it.

McDermott to Botha, FOUR, Oh Botha, you smart cookie! How well has he played this shot at different levels, over the years. He gets the front foot across and laps the length ball over fine leg for four. Brisbane are bleeding. 19 off that over.

End of over 16 (19 runs) Adelaide Strikers 138/5

    • J Botha 6 (2b 1x4)
    • KA Pollard 25 (15b 3x4 1x6)
    • AC McDermott 3-0-36-2
    • BCJ Cutting 4-0-37-2

70 runs off the last 6 overs - that's nearly two per ball. Breathless stuff.

Christian to Pollard, FOUR, Third man and point inside the circle. High full toss, wide of off stump. Do I need to say further? Pollard throws his bat at it and edges high and safe over the two men inside the circle.

Christian to Pollard, FOUR, That's the most comical bit of fielding you'll see in the BBL. Full length ball on middle and leg, Pollard launches over wide long on. Long on and midwicket converge on the circle, either of them could have cut it off. But long-on (McDermott) over-runs it and the ball slips through for four.

Christian to Pollard, 1 run, gets a single into the off side this time.

Christian to Botha, 1 run, short ball angling into Botha who slaps to the deep square leg region for one.

Christian to Pollard, SIX, if the plan is it get Pollard out with no-balls, I have to say it isn't working. High and gentle outside off, Pollard again just throws willow at it and gets a thick outside edge that easily clears the short cover boundary. Poor bowling, visceral batting.

Christian to Pollard, 2 runs, Pollard thumps a full ball down the ground and takes two more. Heat are feeling the heat now.

End of over 17 (18 runs) Adelaide Strikers 156/5

    • KA Pollard 42 (20b 5x4 2x6)
    • J Botha 7 (3b 1x4)
    • DT Christian 4-0-42-0
    • AC McDermott 3-0-36-2

"That was the epitome of poor communication. It's times like these I'm glad I'm a cricket fan and not a Heat fan," says Jessee, in reference to that comical fielding effort in the last over.

Perera to Botha, 1 run, Reverse-sweep off a fast bowler! Botha pulls it off really well, but can't beat the man at point. If he had that was four runs for the taking.

Perera to Pollard, no run, 103 kph as Perera literally makes the ball stop and go the other way. Pollard swiped hard, but played the shot at least a second too early.

Perera to Pollard, SIX, take that! Over-pitched marginally and just enough room for Pollard to bash it inside out over deep cover for another six. The ball lands in the construction clutter and rubble. Pollard looks as menacing as those big earth movers they have out there.

Perera to Pollard, OUT, Perera gets Pollard just in time. Another couple of overs of this, and it could have been game over. Slower ball outside off, short of a length and Pollard top-edges it high and it ends in the keeper's hands.

KA Pollard c †Hartley b Perera 48 (23b 5x4 3x6) SR: 208.69

Pollard says he didn't time any of his shots today. Makes one wonder.... Pretty brutal innings that for a jet-lagged man.

McDermott to Botha, 1 run, slow, short ball this time, Botha works to the leg side for a single.

McDermott to Richardson, 1 wide, goes a little over board with the short stuff from McD. Went over the batsman's head by over a foot for a wide.

McDermott to Richardson, FOUR, an absolute scud missile of a shot! Full outside off, and Richardson skims it brutally with a pick-up shot that nearly clears the ropes though it doesn't go too high.

End of over 19 (12 runs) Adelaide Strikers 177/7

    • KW Richardson 4 (1b 1x4)
    • J Botha 11 (7b 1x4)

Perera to Botha, 2 runs, slower ball again, no pace to work with, but Botha makes up for it by running like the wind and looting two through the covers.

Perera to Botha, 1 run, again, short and slow, Botha works it into the cover point area for one.

Perera to Richardson, OUT, and a wicket. Perera's bowled really smartly today. Another short ball, Richardson gets into a tangle with the pull shot and drags it onto the timber.

KW Richardson b Perera 4 (2b 1x4 0x6) SR: 200.00

Perera to Boyce, no run, full and wide outside off, Boyce, the new man in, can't get bat on it.

Perera to Boyce, 1 run, back of a length, Boyce manages to work it away into the leg side for a single.

Perera to Botha, FOUR, Botha finishes off on a high! Charges out of the crease and slaps a length ball disdainfully, threading the gap between mid-off and cover beautifully for four.

Pollard's bash-a-thon has given this game a new complexion. The Strikers were ailing until Ferguson and Reardon got things back on track. And then Pollard gave them a power-boost. Back with the chase in a bit.

End of over 20 (8 runs) Adelaide Strikers 185/8
