The Shane Warne-led Stars did not have a great start to the competition with a defeat to same-town rivals Melbourne Renegades. Since then they have won two in two and are in the top half of the table.

The Sixers, defending champions and Champions League T20 2012 winners, ran home easy winners against the Thunder but lost their second encounter. They will be playing their third game. Suneer Chowdhary here to take you through tonight's play.

0.1

Lee to Quiney, 1 leg bye, swing back into the batsman, it was a length ball and quick, Quiney was going back and is hit on his pads, an appeal follows but is quickly stifled when Lee sees the umpire walk away, probably the height

0.2

Lee to Henry, no run, leaves it alone outside the off stump, and almost shaves the stump on its way through to the keeper

0.3

Lee to Henry, 1 run, tad more outside the off, on the length and opens the face of the bat to guide it to third-man for a single that brings his BBL career tally to one.

0.4

Lee to Quiney, no run, short of length and tapped to the leg side, goes to mid-wicket

0.5

Lee to Quiney, OUT, edged and gone! Quiney's form has been a tad up and down and he fails yet again, it was on a length and there seemed to be a bit of swing away, the batsman was playing across, gets an edge that travels to a rather deep first slipper

RJ Quiney c DLR Smith b Lee 0 (3m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Brad Hodge at three.

0.6

Lee to Hodge, no run, and bounce from length. Hodge was going on to his back foot to defend but it rears up and hits his shoulder, the batsman has to take the bottom hand off and it pops to the off side

2.1

Lee to Hodge, no run, full, outside the off stump and Hodge gets his foot out and drives it straight to mid-off, good shot for nothing

2.2

Lee to Hodge, 1 wide, bouncer follows the full-pitcher and Hodge easily goes under and the umpire calls it a wide

2.2

3.2

O'Keefe to Henry, 2 runs, goes down the track and gets an outside edge of the bat, spoons it in the gap between short third-man and point and just misses the fielders!

3.3

O'Keefe to Henry, OUT, appeal for a run-out here and gone! gone, run-out, the batsman pulls it away to the leg-side and wants to take a single, Hodge does not and sends him back, Henriques sends a quick, flat throw back to the keeper who whips the bails off before the debutant can get back...two down!

SO Henry run out 6 (14m 11b 0x4 0x6) SR: 54.54

This is an excellent start for the champions. Luke Feldman comes on now.

4.1

Feldman to Maxwell, no run, outside the off, 134.8 km/hr, and he wants to cut it away, gets no timing there and straight to the cover fielder

4.2

Feldman to Maxwell, 1 run, short of length and Maxwell wants to pull it away, the ball comes on quicker than he thought it would and the pull shot is mistimed, trickles around the corner for a single

4.3

Feldman to Hodge, FOUR, short, wide and laced away over the point region for a four! poor delivery with no fielder outside the circle and given Hodge's strength

4.4

Feldman to Hodge, 2 runs, wow, that is a short one and Hodge has flat-batted it over the umpire there, they take a single and go back for the second, the throw is good again and at the bowler's end, but he fails to collect it, else it was out!

4.5

Feldman to Hodge, FOUR, the third-man came into the circle and point went out, still the short and wide ball has been spanked in front of square and for a four!

4.6

Feldman to Hodge, 2 runs, fuller from Feldman and driven through...almost through...the covers, the fielder gets a hand on it and prevents the boundary, they are able to come back for the second

5.3

Narine to Hodge, 1 run, shorter from Narine and run-out missed again! that was hit to the off side and did not want a single, the non-striker was going for it and that should have been run-out, but Narine fails to remove the bails despite having ample time to do that!

5.4

Narine to Maxwell, no run, wow, that one spins back into the batsman beats the inside half of the bat, hits his pads

5.5

Narine to Maxwell, no run, tapped to the off side off one that turns back to the batsman

5.6

Narine to Maxwell, 1 no ball, no-ball this time, he was trying to sweep it away but does not get it off the middle of the bat

6.2

Mendis to Maxwell, 1 run, fuller on the middle and driven down the ground for a single

6.4

Mendis to Maxwell, 1 run, shorter this time and pulled away to fine-leg for a single

6.5

Mendis to Hodge, 1 run, continues the series of short balls, spins away and it is cut hard to the deep cover fielder but only one

6.6

Mendis to Maxwell, 2 runs, another one, shorter, wide enough to cut it and that is exactly what he does, gets it to the left of the deep cover fielder who has to get around but they get a second by then

Kapil isn't happy with the defending champions: "Sydney continue to be poor from their last game.. 2 run outs missed and I am sure Hodge and Maxwell wont let those go easily... and Narine bowls too many no balls for a spinner.. too casual an attitude I guess.."

7.1

10.3

Henriques to Maxwell, 1 run, tucks it away to deep square-leg off a length ball for a single

10.4

Henriques to Hodge, 2 runs, short of length and Hodge pulls it away to deep square-leg, they are easily able to come back for the second

12.1

Henriques to Maxwell, 2 runs, slower and shorter, the batsman is not able to get to the ball and still swings it away to deep square, they get one and come back for the second, throw is in quickly but so is Maxwell and the third umpire rules that not-out.

12.2

Henriques to Maxwell, 3 runs, it was outside the off and he shimmies it away and gets it over the short fine-leg's head, seems like it was going to the fence again but Brett Lee runs across from square-leg and restricts it to three

12.3

Henriques to Hodge, SIX, excellent stuff from Hodge, who loves these, short and wide and smashes it over point for a six!

12.4

Henriques to Hodge, 1 run, opens the face of the bat and guides it to third-man for a single

12.5

Henriques to Maxwell, 1 run, short of length and blasted through mid-wicket to the deep fielder, gets only a single

The run-rate has jumped to nine.

13.1

Feldman to Maxwell, no run, fuller outside the off and he was giving himself room, misses his first ball in years I think

13.2

Feldman to Maxwell, FOUR, slower, on the length and smacks it over mid-wicket for another four! he swung that really hard and despite the slowness of the ball, it goes away for a four

13.3

Feldman to Maxwell, 2 runs, quicker this time from Feldman and he swill swings it and gets it to wider long-on for a couple of runs

106-run stand off 61 balls.

13.4

Feldman to Maxwell, no run, swings at it again and there was some swing away from the batsman as well, misses the outside edge through to the keeper, was swinging too hard

13.5

Feldman to Maxwell, 2 runs, lucky, lucky Maxwell, but then he is making his own luck, he was trying to slog it away away Viv Richards style into the mid-wicket stands, gets an outside edge and it spoons up between two or three fielders on the off side

13.6

Feldman to Maxwell, 2 runs, full-toss and spanked over the in-field, gets a couple of runs to the left of deep square-leg fielder

There is no other way to say this. Mitchell Starc is being missed.

14.1

Moran to Hodge, 2 runs, fuller on the middle, taps it away to wide long-on region for a couple that brings Hodge his 50 from 31 balls

14.2

Moran to Hodge, 1 run, full-toss and not too quick, can only hit it to long-on for a single

14.3

Moran to Maxwell, no run, shorter this time and he wants to cut it hard, misses the outside edge, probably can use a chat with Hodge on how to play that stroke!

14.4

Moran to Maxwell, FOUR, fuller outside the off and he is back to going for that slog over mid-wicket, gets another outside edge and it loops over the third-man fielder who is within the circle and runs away to another boundary

14.5

Moran to Maxwell, 1 run, fuller on the off stump and the only place he can hit it is to long-on for a single

14.6

Moran to Hodge, OUT, gone, caught at backward point! finally a breakthrough, it was shorter and wider outside the off, which isn't the best of balls to deliver when you have a short third-man and point inside the circle but then it is also one that gets him a wicket, guided straight to the fielder!

Narine to Hussey, 1 run, shorter and turning back into the batsman, played down to long-on for a single

15.3

Narine to Maxwell, no run, sweeps away to one that isn't that full, misses and Haddin is quick to get the bails down, he has never gotten his foot out though

15.4

SthAussie: "I think Hazlewood is a big loss too, especially on Aus, SA & Eng pitches, his economy has been great" No doubt about that, he was excellent in the Champions League T20 earlier this year.

15.5

Narine to Hussey, 1 run, carrom ball, quicker outside the off and cuts it away, does not get too much timing on it and fielded well by backward point

15.6

Narine to Maxwell, 2 runs, shorter from Narine and Maxwell has been dropped! Unbelievably, it is Steven Smith who spills the catch, running from long-off towards the wider region to his right and he was well under it, gets both his hands and goes through!

Narine.and O'keefe are far better bowlers on any given day in t20 than Moran and others. yet they have not been given their complete quota of overs. i am totally surprised" Surprised with O'Keefe not getting his four overs but to be fair to Moran, it was his couple of wickets in the end that brought the Sixers back.

Excellent score this, 177/6 and the Sixers will need to bat rather well against a very good Stars bowling. How they handle Lasith Malinga will be one of the keys. Back in 10 with the chase.

End of over 20 (12 runs) Melbourne Stars 177/6
JP Faulkner    3* (3b)      B Lee    4-0-25-2
PSP Handscomb    11* (5b 2x4)      IA Moran    3-0-30-3
