Hobart Hurricanes moved to fourth place by thumping Sydney Thunder by 73 runs, handing them their 19th consecutive loss, as the competition for the top four places got stiffer. Hurricanes' win was charged by a 54-ball 96 from Ben Dunk and stifling spells from Ben Laughlin and legspinner Cameron Boyce who took three wickets each.

Electing to bat, Dunk got going from the second over, hitting Dirk Nannes for consecutive fours. Even though Tim Paine was dismissed in the fifth over, Dunk wasn't perturbed as he targeted the leg side for three of his five sixes. He brought up his fifty off Jason Floros, who conceded 45 from four overs, with a four and a six in the 10th over and clobbered 16 more in his next over. Wickets fell at the other end but that didn't stop Dunk from racing to his career-best score and charging Hurricanes to 167 even though he fell for 96 in the 17th over.

Thunder never got going for the chase, losing two wickets in the first 13 balls, including the big wicket of Michael Hussey for 2. Three of their top four fell for single-digit scores as Usman Khawaja scored 28 at the other end before falling to Laughlin in the 10th over. Boyce wrapped up the tail by taking three wickets in six balls as Thunder saw only three more batsmen after Khawaja score in double digits and collapsed for 94. Shoaib Malik bowled an economical spell of 2 for 19 in four overs.
