David Gibson, a fast bowler who was not quite good enough with the bat to be classified as an allrounder, took ten wickets in the match against Gloucestershire on his County Championship debut in 1957 - a feat he never repeated - but that was one of only two appearances that summer. The following season, in which Surrey won the seventh and last title in their remarkable sequence of championships, he played in almost half their matches as he deputised for the unwell Alec Bedser. Thereafter he was a regular in the side, and in 1965 his claims to be an allrounder where underlined when he came within four runs of making 1000 in the season, and allied to his 86 wickets it was his best summer. He also made his two best scores of 95 and 98. But cartlidge trouble, which ultimately ended his career, limited his appearances in 1966 and he was never again fit enough to hold down a regular place, although he scored 300 runs and took 18 wickets in eight matches in 1967. He eventually retired at the end of 1969. In 185 matches he took 552 wickets at 22.22 and scored 3143 runs at 18.93. He moved into coaching - for a time he ran Surrey's 2nd XI and played for them in 1979 and 1980- before emigrating to Australia.
