Flying Officer David Hayward died in a flying accident when a First Officer Air Transport Auxiliary. An accurate legbreak bowler who could also score runs "by an unorthodox method" according to The Times, he was in the Oxford University side in his first year, taking 19 wickets in eight appearances, but did not win a Blue. He made one appearance later that summer for Middlesex. He was in the Harrow XI between 1936 and 1938.
