Alex Hill finally made to the University XI in fourth year, and played for Oxford in their one-day Varsity match at Lord's in June 2004 as the first-choice wicketkeeper.
A football blue for his goalkeeping, Hill had dominated cricket matches for his college, Wadham, whom he captained in his second year. He had terrorised college bowling attacks, launching good length balls over the inflield, and behind the stumps, his safe hands allowed him to stand up to all varieties of bowling.
Hill missed out on a token first-class appearance, in the four-day Varsity match, as his committments to Teach First proved inflexible.
