As Viscount Lewisham he played cricket with much enthusiasm, but did not succeed in getting into either the Eton or Oxford XI. He often took part in MCC matches, and captained the House of Commons XI. Closely connected with Kent cricket he was President of the County Club in 1888. Five years later he became MCC President and was trustee of the club. He was Governor of I Zingari and for 40 years President of the Staffordshire County Club.
