Profile

Robert Morris was an opening batsman and offspinner who was good enough to be picked for the public school matches at Lord's in 1944 and 1945, and after National Service, he went up to Cambridge in 1948. On his debut in 1949 he made 96, which was to be his career best, against Sussex; as if to underline the vagaries of the game, in the next match he was dismissed for 8, the one man out as Cambridge plundered 441 for 1 against Essex. He won a Blue that summer, but while good enough to play a couple of times for Kent the following year, he stood down to concentrate on his studies. In any case, he would have struggled to force his way into a university top order of Dewes, Sheppard, Doggart and May. He regained his place at the start of the 1951 season but failed to recapture his form, and after only one fifty in nine matches, he was dropped on the eve of the Varsity match.
