Douglas Newman, who died in a London hospital on September 11, aged 39, captained Middlesex II XI from 1954 to 1958, his best season being that of 1954 when he hit 465 runs, average 31.00, with 132 his highest innings. He made occasional appearances in County Championship matches in 1950 and 1951. A well-known club cricketer, he was captain of Winchmore Hill as well as opening the batting for Alexandra Park.
