A tidy medium-paced bowler, Ashish Patel is somewhat of an oddity in the Canadian team, hailing from Quebec. Given an opportunity for the national side after the unavilability of a number of players for the 2001-02 Americas Cup, he took seven wickets at an average of 15 in the tournament, bowling particularly well against the USA. He followed this up with a strong showing in the Six Nations Challenge in Namibia, dismissing Tikolo and Odumbe against Kenya; and taking three wickets against Namibia. Picked in the Canadian World Cup squad in 2003, he made an impressive debut against South Africa, dismissing Gibbs and Kallis in his opening spell. He was Canada's top wicket-taker in the 2004 Six Nations tournament, cementing his place as one of Canada's top strike bowlers.
