C. Christopher Morris was one of the leading American cricketers during the heyday of US cricket before World War One. A hard-hitting top-order batsman, in 1900 he made the first of many tours to the UK, as part of the Haverford College side, scoring 147 against Winchester. In 1901 he made his debut for the USA against Canada, top scoring in both innings with 37 and 32. In the second innings United States needed 109 runs and lost their first 5 wickets for 38. Morris then went in and his 32 quickly helped to turn the victory their way. He made two appearances against BJT Bosanquet's side that summer, starting a international career which ended when he played against Douglas Jardine's XI in 1933. His first senior tour to England was in 1903 for the Philadelphians, and against Nottinghamshire he blasted 164 to set an American record. He toured again in 1904 (as captain of Haverford College) and in 1908, again with the Philadelphians. His last tour was in 1921 as part of the Philadelphian Pilgrims. Although best remembered for his batting, he was one of the first Americans to bowl the googly, as well as being an immaculate fielder. He was also a tireless campaigner to keep cricket alive in Philadelphia, and the world-famous cricket library at Haverford in named after him.
