Tall and muscular, capable of delivering the ball at over 85 mph, Nixon McLean never made a great Test match bowler, possessing neither the pace, movement or consistency to bowl out teams on good tracks - perhaps the telling statistic is that he never took more than three wickets in an international innings.

Away from his native Windward Islands, he represented Hampshire, Somerset and KwaZulu Natal with some success. It is perhaps because of his experience in South African conditions that he was selected for the 2003 World Cup, as he had not played international cricket for nearly two years. But in three matches he went wicketless, and was discarded.
