RELATIONS

Having now played around forty interstate limited overs matches and only three at the first class level, it seems that all-rounder Scott Prestwidge continues to be very firmly typecast as a specialist one-day player. In a sense, Prestwidge has been a victim of his own suitability to the dual role of bowling tight medium pace and batting with controlled aggression in the middle to lower order. As a handy exponent of each (and a stern competitor to boot), he has become one of the first selected in Queensland one-day teams over recent years. But it has been precisely the impression that he does not possess quite the sufficient polish to become a specialist in either area in its own right which has essentially been the chief contributing factor in preventing him from becoming a regular first class player. For the void that the lack of first class cricket has created in his career in both his native New South Wales and his adopted state of Queensland (to where he moved in 1990), though, it has to be said that he has still enjoyed a number of noteworthy successes. Chief among these was the sensational man of the match winning effort which enabled the Bulls to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against his old state in Sydney in the Mercantile Mutual Cup Final of 1997-98. He additionally won a select place in his nation's cricketing history by being chosen in 1988 as one of the inaugural inductees of the Australian Cricket Academy. He is also a past winner of the Peter Burge Medal - Brisbane grade cricket's highest individual honour. (John Polack, June 2000)
