Commonwealth Bank Series - 9th match

England v New Zealand

New Zealand won by 58 runs

1.20pm New Zealand have won the toss and will bat. The weather has cooled considerably since the weekend and it's far more pleasant for both teams. Here we go ... Liam Plunkett with the new ball to Lou Vincent

1.15pmGood morning and welcome to our commentary on the ninth match of the CB Series between England and New Zealand. Given that both sides have been regularly and roundly thrashed by the Australians, this game is likely to decide who goes through to the best-of-three finals ...where they will in all likelihood be hammered again.

New Zealand have made two changes, bringing in Shane Bond and James Franklin in for Gillespie and Mills. England, meanwhile, are unchanged but they have dropped the out-of-sorts Andrew Strauss down to No. 4 and his county colleague Ed Joyce will open the innings.

0.1

Plunkett to Vincent, 1 wide, not the best of starts, started wide and swung wider, a groan across the cold and dark United Kingdom and an easy decision for the umpire

0.1

Plunkett to Vincent, no run, better line, again a sniff of away swing

0.2

Plunkett to Vincent, no run, short of a length, on line, Vincent back and defends

0.3

Plunkett to Vincent, 1 leg bye, leg side, thuds into the pads and a well-run single as the ball dribbles out into space

0.4

Plunkett to Fleming, no run, angled across Fleming and he was not remotely tempted by that one

0.5

Plunkett to Fleming, 1 leg bye, again into the pads and another good, quick call from Vincent gets a second leg bye

0.6

Plunkett to Vincent, 2 runs, short, flicked over square leg but not timed and long leg gets round to field 15 yards in from the rope

Decent enough opening over, enough swing to give Plunkett some encouragement. Chris Tremlett to open at the other end.

End of over 1 (5 runs) New Zealand 5/0 (RR: 5.00)
L Vincent    2* (4b)      LE Plunkett    1-0-3-0
SP Fleming    0* (2b)

1.1

Tremlett to Fleming, 1 run, short on leg stump, turned round the corner quite easily

1.2

Tremlett to Vincent, no run, good ball, it bounced as well, and Vincent let it pass inches outside off stump

1.3

Tremlett to Vincent, (no ball) 1 run, slightly fuller, found the edge of Vincent's bat, along the ground but it was a no-ball anyway despite the chorus of noise from behind the stumps

1.3

Tremlett to Fleming, 1 wide, a wide to follow the no-ball, down the leg and Vincent didn't have to move as it sneaked behind him

1.3

Tremlett to Fleming, no run, fuller and straighter, blocked with hard hands to mid-on

1.4

Tremlett to Fleming, 2 runs, same line, check-block to cover where Dalrymple half stops - he should have done better than that - and allows the one

1.5

Tremlett to Fleming, FOUR, on leg stump, sweetly flicked round the corner, never a chance of long leg, who is too wide, to even think about stopping that

Flintoff moves the man down there finer ... the consensus is he is still about 10 yards too wide

1.6

Tremlett to Fleming, no run, outside off stump,Fleming leaves that

Ten off the over. It looks like being another long day for England.

End of over 2 (10 runs) New Zealand 15/0 (RR: 7.50)

2.1

Plunkett to Vincent, no run, thuds into the pads and after two quick leg-byes in the last over, the fielders are slightly closer and swoop

2.2

Plunkett to Vincent, 1 wide, a wide called but a bit harsh. If the umpires are consistent we might be here all day if they call all of those ...

2.2

Plunkett to Vincent, no run, jags back into Vincent and hits him high on the pad, no appeal

2.3

Plunkett to Vincent, FOUR, leg stump, clipped through midwicket all along the ground, lovely control and it just has enough legs to creep over the rope

2.4

Plunkett to Vincent, no run, a foot outside off stump and Vincent shoulders arms

2.5

Plunkett to Vincent, 1 wide, another wide, less doubt about that one as it sailed towards first slip

Seven extras and we're only in the third over!

2.5

Plunkett to Vincent, 1 run, Plunkett overcorrects and Vincent flicks him down to long leg

2.6

Plunkett to Fleming, no run, a rather ungainly defensive prod on the walk into the leg side

End of over 3 (7 runs) New Zealand 22/0 (RR: 7.33)
SP Fleming    7* (8b 1x4)      LE Plunkett    2-0-10-0
L Vincent    8* (11b 1x4)      CT Tremlett    1-0-10-0

3.1

Tremlett to Vincent, no run, prodded into the ground, the ball bounces at his feet and drops just behind the stumps

3.2

Tremlett to Vincent, no run, Vincent onto the back foot again to defend. Better bowling to start his second over from Tremlett ...

3.3

Tremlett to Vincent, no run, same length - slightly short - outside off stump and left

3.4

Tremlett to Vincent, 1 wide, but that's is clearly a wide - the fifth so far

3.4

Tremlett to Vincent, no run, slightly straighter, still wide enough to leave, but the in-house close cordon react as if it was the ball of the century

3.5

Tremlett to Vincent, no run, not quite yorker-length but Vincent has to hurry to dig that out

3.6

Tremlett to Vincent, no run, cuts back in, strikes Vincent, who was up on his toes, high on the front foot, a loud appeal but only from Tremlett as that was going well over the top

End of over 4 (1 run) New Zealand 23/0 (RR: 5.75)
L Vincent    8* (17b 1x4)      CT Tremlett    2-0-11-0

4.1

Plunkett to Fleming, FOUR, short, disdainfully swatted over square leg

4.2

Plunkett to Fleming, FOUR, and once more too short, pulled this time through midwicket

This is simply not good enough from Plunkett, he cannot bang it in on this track to this batsman.

4.3

Plunkett to Fleming, no run, fuller, Fleming drawn forward to defensively drive, much better

4.4

Plunkett to Fleming, no run, and again Fleming pulled forward to block

4.5

Plunkett to Fleming, 1 wide, swings wide down the leg side, Fleming shapes to flick it away but it's too wide for him to do that

4.5

Plunkett to Fleming, no run, slanted across Fleming who momentarily looks as if he is going to chase it but he doesn't

4.6

Plunkett to Fleming, OUT, full and swinging in, Fleming caught in no-man's land and it raps him on the pad but looks for all the world to have got a thin inside edge to that. If he didn't then it was plumb ... the umpire has no doubts

SP Fleming lbw b Plunkett 15 (28m 14b 3x4 0x6) SR: 107.14

And credit to Asad Rauf. Replays show he was quite right, no edge but the two noises came as the ball hit front and then pack pads.

End of over 5 (9 runs) New Zealand 32/1 (RR: 6.40)

5.1

Tremlett to Vincent, 1 run, turned to long leg

5.2

Tremlett to Fulton, no run, Fulton can do no more than push into the off side

5.3

Tremlett to Fulton, no run, good length, Fulton blocks to mid-on

5.4

Tremlett to Fulton, no run, short out side off stump, Fulton leaves alone

5.5

Tremlett to Fulton, no run, good line, again Fulton leaves, and the incessant chirping in overdrive after three decent balls

5.6

Tremlett to Fulton, 1 run, tip and run to mid-on, Fulton took the pace off that and called immediately, never a sniff of danger

End of over 6 (2 runs) New Zealand 34/1 (RR: 5.66)
PG Fulton    1* (5b)      CT Tremlett    3-0-13-0
L Vincent    9* (18b 1x4)      LE Plunkett    3-0-19-1

6.1

Plunkett to Fulton, no run, good length on off stump, Fulton back and into line

6.2

Plunkett to Fulton, no run, Fulton drawn forward and he misses an airy drive

Much better length with that ball. That's where he needs to bowl and let the natural swing do the rest.

6.3

Plunkett to Fulton, 4 runs, Rubbish! Short and wide, hammered to short coverby Fulton and Bell makes a great stop ... and then hurls the ball at the non-striker's end where Flintoff is slow to back up and it's overthrows. Utterly unnecessary and that is simply bad cricket

6.4

Plunkett to Fulton, no run, down the leg side, a wide had it not tickled Fulton's pads as it passed

6.5

Plunkett to Fulton, 1 run, push and run to mid-on where Flintoff is slow to react ... boy, does he look stiff as he fields that!

6.6

Plunkett to Vincent, no run, short and Fulton leaves it

A really good over spoiled by that moment of madness from Ian Bell. Plunkett deserved better.

End of over 7 (5 runs) New Zealand 39/1 (RR: 5.57)

7.1

Tremlett to Fulton, 2 runs, turned into space between midwicket and mid-on

7.2

Tremlett to Fulton, 1 run, too full, flicked round the corner to long leg

7.3

Tremlett to Vincent, 2 runs, short, worked round behind square on the leg, but the pace was off that and the pair ran well as Panesar thundered in and unleashed a powerful throw

7.4

Tremlett to Vincent, no run, Vincent forced back to block

7.5

Tremlett to Vincent, (no ball) 1 run, far too short and a no-ball as well, Vincent not quite onto that and it trundles to Panesar at long leg

7.5

Tremlett to Fulton, no run, dropped into the leg side but midwicket quickly in to scotch thoughts of a run

7.6

Tremlett to Fulton, 1 leg bye, again down the leg, clipped fine and Panesar does well to keep them to one

End of over 8 (8 runs) New Zealand 47/1 (RR: 5.87)
PG Fulton    9* (14b)      CT Tremlett    4-0-20-0
L Vincent    12* (22b 1x4)      LE Plunkett    4-0-24-1

8.1

Plunkett to Fulton, no run, firm defensive prod, edged into the front pad and momentarily Plunkett thought he might get a return catch, but it dropped well short

8.2

Plunkett to Fulton, FOUR, poor line, so easy for Fulton to shimmy inside the ball and run it fine on the leg side

8.3

Plunkett to Fulton, no run, Fulton back and across, good response from Plunkett

8.4

Plunkett to Fulton, 2 runs, dropped ... Fulton looks to work that through midwicket but gets an uncontrolled leading edge which loops high over the bowler's head and Flintoff runs back from mid-on, in semi slow motion, and makes a despairing dive a yard outside the fielding circle but doesn't get a hand to it. Harsh, possibly, but others would have

8.5

Plunkett to Fulton, OUT, full and on off stump, Fulton looks to drive, gets a thin edge and Nixon does well to take a low catch tumbling to his right

PG Fulton c †Nixon b Plunkett 15 (19m 19b 1x4 0x6) SR: 78.94

Flintoff chugs in grinning ... it wasn't a costly miss!

8.6

Plunkett to Taylor, 1 run, turned to long leg, good fielding by Tremlett prevents a second

9.1

Tremlett to Taylor, 1 wide, down the leg side

9.5

Tremlett to Vincent, no run, six inches closer to off stump and Vincent leaves it alone

9.6

Tremlett to Vincent, 1 wide, and another leg-side wide ... simply not good enough says Ian Botham for the 403rd time this series, and for once the BBB team agrees

9.6

Tremlett to Vincent, 1 leg bye, flicked off the pads into the leg side

Second Powerplay signal ... er ... signalled

10.1

Plunkett to Vincent, no run, lovely ball, right line, right length and Vincent left sparring at air

10.2

Plunkett to Vincent, 1 run, pushed to cover and another easy run

Short midwicket trots in to wide third slip

10.3

Plunkett to Taylor, no run, pushed to mid-on

10.4

Plunkett to Taylor, no run, very wide and chased by Taylor, he had no need to play at that and really had to reach to miss it

10.5

Plunkett to Taylor, 3 runs, worked into space through midwicket, poor ball well played

10.6

Plunkett to Vincent, FOUR, Vincent throws the bat at another widish one and the ball flashes six inches over the one-handed leap of first slip. Had he missed, it would have been a wide

Flintoff has had enough and he's bringing himself on.

End of over 11 (8 runs) New Zealand 66/2 (RR: 6.00)

Flintoff to Taylor, no run, super ball first up, 86mph (138kph) and it races through Taylor

11.2

Flintoff to Taylor, FOUR, down the leg and flicked fine by Taylor, and Flintoff's pace does the rest

11.3

Flintoff to Taylor, 1 run, dropped down towards square leg, but with the pace taken off the ball it was a good, well-run single. With good calling and a decent understanding between batsmen, there are runs almost everywhere

11.4

Flintoff to Vincent, no run, outside off, shortish and the batsman not tempted

11.5

Flintoff to Vincent, no run, prodded into the off side and the fielders converge

11.6

Flintoff to Vincent, no run, much the same, but this time left alone

The cameras have just zoomed in on the Barmy Army. Well, what's left of them. They look like the remnants of Napoleon's troops after the retreat from Moscow ... there are about ten of them ... meanwhile cheers as Monty Panesar comes into the attack.

13.4

Flintoff to Taylor, no run, short and that jarred Taylor's bottom hand

13.6

Flintoff to Taylor, no run, Taylor beaten this time as he shaped to flick to leg, a loud appeal but it was probably going over the leg stump

Hello everyone. Thanks Martin and Mastercard. Vincent and Taylor are both well set for some big scores here. A good platform for New Zealand, then, and at this rate they'll be looking to push 300-plus. One of you, and that's you Cam Pepper, has been very cynical and suggested New Zealand should declare now. JDP Oram    15* (18b 1x6)      LE Plunkett    9-0-54-3

46.1

Tremlett to Franklin, 1 run, wide down off and a strongly hit cover drive results in just a single, as it's straight to the fielder

46.2

Tremlett to Oram, 1 run, dug out from the off-side for a quick single to mid-on

46.3

Tremlett to Franklin, (no ball) 2 runs, wide again and that's sent aerial into space in the extra-cover region. No-ball for overstepping makes New Zealand's score even healthier

46.3

Tremlett to Franklin, OUT, length ball and tries to clear mid-off, but Plunkett at long-off, running backwards, holds on for a relatively easy catch

JEC Franklin c Plunkett b Tremlett 9 (13m 8b 0x4 0x6) SR: 112.50

Vettori walks in, limbering up as he goes

46.4

Tremlett to Oram, 1 run, worked out off the back foot for an easy single

46.5

Tremlett to Vettori, 1 run, worked off the legs for an easy single in front of square

46.6

Tremlett to Oram, no run, played off the back foot down in front of him

End of over 47 (7 runs) New Zealand 270/7 (RR: 5.74)
JDP Oram    17* (21b 1x6)      CT Tremlett    9-0-50-1
DL Vettori    1* (1b)      JWM Dalrymple    5-0-43-0

47.1

Flintoff to Vettori, 1 run, wide and slapped away square of the wicket on the off

47.2

Flintoff to Oram, 1 run, wide again outside off and that's worked out to the man at deep cover who wings it back in flat

47.3

Flintoff to Vettori, 2 runs, squirted to leg and the batsmen take on a risky two, Vettori turning blind to boot - but the return throw's too high for Nixon to deal with in tim

47.4

Flintoff to Vettori, FOUR, well placed on the off-side, what a fantastic shot. Flintoff moved an extra man on the off-side, so Vettori stepped across his stumps and went leg-side

47.5

Flintoff to Vettori, 1 run, worked out to off

47.6

Flintoff to Oram, 1 run, worked into the covers this time

End of over 48 (10 runs) New Zealand 280/7 (RR: 5.83)
JDP Oram    19* (23b 1x6)      A Flintoff    9-0-50-0
DL Vettori    9* (5b 1x4)      CT Tremlett    9-0-50-1

48.1

Tremlett to Oram, FOUR, played off the back foot and that's village from Plunkett at long-off, just letting the ball trickle through his fingers. Flintoff's hands on hips, unamused

48.2

Tremlett to Oram, SIX, smashed for a huge six in front of midwicket! Rubbing salt into the wound there, all right. And a bit of pepper. Possibly some vinegar

48.3

Tremlett to Oram, SIX, what a shot! Straight drive over long-off and that's a beautiful crack, cleanly struck

48.4

Tremlett to Oram, FOUR, low full toss, slashes at it with big shoulders, gets a low edge which dribbles away and that's the 300 up!

48.5

Tremlett to Oram, 1 run, worked to long-on this time

48.6

Tremlett to Vettori, 1 run, taken from middle stump and worked round to the man on the 45

22 runs off that over and New Zealand have topped the 300-mark. Flintoff to take the last over. Sending fine leg a bit finer to begin with

End of over 49 (22 runs) New Zealand 302/7 (RR: 6.16)
DL Vettori    10* (6b 1x4)      CT Tremlett    10-0-72-1
JDP Oram    40* (28b 2x4 3x6)      A Flintoff    9-0-50-0

49.1

Flintoff to Vettori, 1 run, quick single brings Oram on strike

49.2

Flintoff to Oram, 1 wide, wide, Oram flashes at that, just fails to get an upper-edge. That's called wide which is probably a bit harsh, bouncing as it did in the tramlines

49.2

Flintoff to Oram, SIX, lovely shot! This is such a good innings by Oram, this time digging out a ball that's nearly a yorker, and driving it straight again

49.3

Flintoff to Oram, no run, wide down off, Oram tries to lay bat on that, but is too late on the shot and Nixon pouches

49.4

Flintoff to Oram, 2 runs, late cut down to third man and that's a poor throw from Tremlett, wild and well, rubbish

49.5

Flintoff to Oram, FOUR, one-bounce four from a low full toss to bring his fifth one-day fifty, this one coming from just 32 balls

49.6

Flintoff to Oram, 2 runs, an aerial slash in front of midwicket lands comfortably inside the rope

Welcome back (if you've gone anywhere). Franklin to open up from the Prindiville End

New Zealand have carved apart England's bowling attack here at Perth, to leave themselves strongly placed to make it into the CB Finals. England will need to hunt down 6.38 runs an over thanks to the swashbuckling efforts of Vincent, Taylor and Oram, in particular, who all made fifties. England's inexperienced bowling attack paid the price, and they weren't helped by some sloppy fielding late on. I'm off down the bookies and will report back shortly with the odds. Yes, unsurprisingly it's a complete waste of time down there - England are 5 to 1 to chase this down, New Zealand 9 to 1 against.

End of over 50 (16 runs) New Zealand 318/7
