Commonwealth Bank Series - 12th match

England v New Zealand

England won by 14 runs

1.10pm The teams are out on the field, with Michael Vaughan and Ed Joyce set to open up for England. It's going to be Joyce to face the first ball from the Vulture Street End. James Franklin is the bowler

1pm England have won the toss and will bat. New Zealand, incidentally, are an unchanged side, which is good news for the injury-prone Shane Bond.

"Batting is a little bit easier in daytime conditions, but you still have to do it well," says Vaughan, who insists he is not a fitness liability. As for Kevin Pietersen, there are rumours circulating that he might make a return if England reach the finals, but Vaughan has dismissed them ... for the time being.

To reiterate, Mal Loye has been omitted, and the out-of-form Andrew Strauss retained, which is arguably a bit of a strange move from England - unless, of course, Loye is still suffering from his mishap against Australia last week.

12pm Good morning and welcome to Cricinfo's ball-by-ball commentary for the 12th match of the CB Series, and would you believe it, after a month of near one-way traffic we have a contest to savour today. England and New Zealand, level on points after two wins apiece, both require victory to reach the best-of-three finals.

And as far as England are concerned, there is already some good news. Michael Vaughan has been passed fit, after recovering from the hamstring injury he sustained at Hobart last month. Here is the team:

England 1 Michael Vaughan (capt), 2 Ed Joyce, 3 Ian Bell, 4 Andrew Strauss, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Andrew Flintoff, 7 Jamie Dalrymple, 8 Paul Nixon (wk), 9 Liam Plunkett, 10 Sajid Mahmood, 11 Monty Panesar. The 12th man is last week's debutant, Ravi Bopara.

New Zealand 1 Stephen Fleming (capt), 2 Lou Vincent, 3 Peter Fulton, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Scott Styris, 6 Jacob Oram, 7 Brendon McCullum (wk), 8 Daniel Vettori, 9 James Franklin, 10 Shane Bond, 11 Mark Gillespie.

So, no place for Mal Loye, who sustained a nasty cut to his chin while attempting to sweep Glenn McGrath for six in the last match. New Zealand team news as and when we get it.

0.1

Franklin to Joyce, no run, outside off stump, in a good channel, zips through to the keeper at a reasonable lick. Good start

Welcome back to the Gabba, where England are out on the field preparing to defend their handy total of 270. New Zealand's openers, Stephen Fleming and Lou Vincent, are emerging from the pavilion and it's going to be Liam Plunkett to take the new ball

0.1

Franklin to Joyce, no run

0.1

Franklin to Joyce, no run, wide of off stump, the swing takes it away towards the slips, but a handy amount of movement nonetheless

0.2

Franklin to Joyce, no run, a bit wider but not called as such. Good carry once again through to McCullum

0.3

Franklin to Joyce, no run, width again, and Joyce lays bat on ball for the first time in the match. Doesn't time his steer through the covers though

0.4

Franklin to Joyce, no run, yorker, and a good one too. Joyce jabs his bat down just in time as his toes retreat to square-leg

0.5

Franklin to Joyce, no run, full and straight, and defended watchfully back up the pitch

Two slips so far

0.6

Franklin to Joyce, no run, excellent first over, right on the money to finish. Joyce defends and the ball bobbles a couple of yards from the bat

Here's Shane Bond to share the new-ball honours. Two slips as well

End of over 1 (maiden) England 0/0 (RR: 0.00)
EC Joyce    0* (6b)      JEC Franklin    1-1-0-0
MP Vaughan    0* (0b)

1.1

Bond to Vaughan, 1 wide, oops, that slipped. Passed the popping crease on the full, and tidied up by the keeper

1.2

Bond to Vaughan, OUT, GOT HIM! And what a ball to do it with! Full and inswinging, Vaughan was beaten for pace as he jabbed down late on the crease. The ball zipped beneath his bat and onto middle stump! Jubilation for the Kiwis, and England's captain lasts just one delivery on comeback!

MP Vaughan b Bond 0 (6m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

1.3

Bond to Bell, no run, fizzing inswing from Bond, and that clips the thigh-pad before flying high through to the keeper! A bit of excitement from the fielders, but Bond is pumped up

1.4

Bond to Bell, 1 wide, overcooked it again

1.3

Bond to Bell, no run, veers onto the pads, and turned square

1.4

Bond to Bell, 1 run, misdirected again, but good hostile pace - only timed at 86mph (138kph) but it's looking sharper than that. Turned into the leg-side and Bell is off the mark

An extra slip for Joyce as Fleming moves onto the attack

1.5

Bond to Joyce, no run, short, and that zips past the edge, Joyce does well to get his bat out of the way

1.6

Bond to Joyce, no run, another attempted yorker, but outswinging to the left-hander, and defended easily enough outside off stump. Excellent over!

End of over 2 (3 runs) England 3/1 (RR: 1.50)
EC Joyce    0* (8b)      SE Bond    1-0-3-1
IR Bell    1* (3b)      JEC Franklin    1-1-0-0

2.1

Franklin to Bell, no run, full-length, and Bell comes down the pitch to meet it, pushed away into the covers

2.2

Franklin to Bell, no run, angling across the right-hander, and prodded into the covers again

2.3

Franklin to Bell, (no ball) FOUR, shot! A full toss, but excellently clubbed away through the covers. England's first boundary and a good one too

2.3

Franklin to Bell, 1 leg bye, misdirected this time, and turned into the leg-side to rotate the strike

2.4

Franklin to Joyce, no run, better line to the left-hander. Joyce is drawn forward and defends off the front foot

2.5

Franklin to Joyce, no run, full and floated onto a length. Defended again

2.6

Franklin to Joyce, no run, a wafty, woolly swish that time. Maybe a hint of late swing, but well beaten as he came down the track to loft that into the leg-side. Still not off the mark, and maybe the pressure is telling a bit

End of over 3 (6 runs) England 9/1 (RR: 3.00)

IR Bell    5* (7b 1x4)      SE Bond    1-0-3-1

3.1

Bond to Bell, no run, forward and nudged into the covers. A loud "NOO!" as Bell looks for the run

3.2

Bond to Bell, 1 leg bye, inswinger tucks Bell up, but good running to steal a single as the ball deflects down to third man

3.3

Bond to Joyce, 2 runs, too short and Joyce is into position early for the pull. Not quite timed though and they pick up a couple through square leg

3.4

Bond to Joyce, no run, better line and length. Watchfully defended back up the pitch

3.5

Bond to Joyce, no run, pitches middle-and-leg, angled across the left-hander and towards the slips. Defended again

3.6

Bond to Joyce, no run, slightly shorter, but the same result. Defended off the back foot into the covers. Good over again

End of over 4 (3 runs) England 12/1 (RR: 3.00)
EC Joyce    2* (15b)      SE Bond    2-0-5-1
IR Bell    5* (9b 1x4)      JEC Franklin    2-1-5-0

4.1

Franklin to Bell, 1 run, good busy running between the wickets. Dabbed into the leg-side and a quick scamper for a single. Well played

4.2

Franklin to Joyce, no run, angled onto the pads, turned to midwicket

4.3

Franklin to Joyce, 1 run, fuller and speared into the stumps from wide of the crease. Joyce plays with deft hands to flick it down to fine leg

4.4

Franklin to Bell, FOUR, sweet clip through midwicket for four! Excellent timing, just a fraction off-line, but Bell was into position well with quick feet and solid contact

4.5

Franklin to Bell, 1 run, shorter, and a dabbed cut down to third man. Good controlled follow-up

4.6

Franklin to Joyce, (no ball) FOUR, that's a nice shot. Nothing more than a floaty half-volley from Franklin, but it still needed to be put away. And Joyce obliged, just beating two chasing fielders at extra cover

4.6

Franklin to Joyce, no run, drawn forward in defence. That's the end of a useful over for England

End of over 5 (12 runs) England 24/1 (RR: 4.80)
EC Joyce    7* (19b 1x4)      JEC Franklin    3-1-17-0
IR Bell    11* (12b 2x4)      SE Bond    2-0-5-1

5.1

Bond to Bell, no run, brisk again, and fizzes through to the keeper. 86.6mph, which is roughly 139kph

5.2

Bond to Bell, no run, shorter, and zips back off the seam as Bell shoulders arms

5.3

Bond to Bell, no run, a bit too much width that time. Easily left alone by Bell

5.4

Bond to Bell, no run, fuller, and dug out again with a straight and defensive bat

5.5

Bond to Bell, no run, probing that corridor of uncertainty, as they say. A bit too wide to induce a stroke though

5.6

Bond to Bell, no run, that was a bit wide again, but Bell had a nibble this time. Got away with it, but that's a useful maiden over for New Zealand.

It's shaping up as a feisty contest, I reckon. Well, here's an early change. Franklin has been airlifted out of the attack. It's Mark Gillespie from the Vulture Street End. Oh, and since some of you have been asking, it's Andrew Miller on the comms today. Hello.

End of over 6 (maiden) England 24/1 (RR: 4.00)
IR Bell    11* (18b 2x4)      SE Bond    3-1-5-1
EC Joyce    7* (19b 1x4)      JEC Franklin    3-1-17-0

6.1

Gillespie to Joyce, 2 runs, indifferent start, slightly leg-sided, and clipped to midwicket

6.2

Gillespie to Joyce, 1 run, that's good running. Nudged into the leg-side and they set off at once. Annoying for the bowler

6.3

Gillespie to Bell, no run, wide of off stump, but not too wide for the umpire's liking. Left well alone by Bell

6.4

Gillespie to Bell, no run, nice shot for no runs. Drawn forward into a full-blooded cover-drive, but can't beat the field

6.5

Gillespie to Bell, no run, similar shot, similar result. A bit full and wide, steered to cover again. Two let-offs for New Zealand

6.6

Gillespie to Bell, 1 run, more forceful strokeplay, but a half-stop in the covers cuts off another probable boundary. "A bit of a let-off," says Nasser Hussain, and he's got a point

End of over 7 (4 runs) England 28/1 (RR: 4.00)
IR Bell    12* (22b 2x4)      MR Gillespie    1-0-4-0
EC Joyce    10* (21b 1x4)      SE Bond    3-1-5-1

7.1

Bond to Bell, no run, more pacy inswing from Bond, and dug out again

7.2

Bond to Bell, no run, outside off stump, Bell shoulders arms

7.3

Bond to Bell, no run, good rhythm so far from Bond. That one is in the channel once again, and Bell leaves alone once again

7.4

Bond to Bell, no run, drawn into the stroke this time, but again picks out the fielder with an attempted dab to third man. A touch frustrating, but he's a phlegmatic chap

7.5

Bond to Bell, no run, another attractive stroke, but once again he's picked out that ring of fielders in the covers

7.6

Bond to Bell, OUT, GONE! And that's pure frustration that's done for Bell! With a bit of luck and placement he could have had four boundaries in the last two overs. Instead he's been becalmed by some good fielding, and now he's chased a full delivery outside off stump, and edged a regulation chance to second slip!

IR Bell c Styris b Bond 12 (33m 28b 2x4 0x6) SR: 42.85

Terrific start for New Zealand, and it's that man Bond and his extra pace that's make the difference. Here's a man under pressure. It's Andrew Strauss

End of over 8 (wicket maiden) England 28/2 (RR: 3.50)
     SE Bond    4-2-5-2
EC Joyce    10* (21b 1x4)      MR Gillespie    1-0-4-0

8.1

Gillespie to Joyce, no run, short, and pulled without much power to midwicket

8.2

Gillespie to Joyce, no run, trouble for Strauss, but he's home! Joyce clipped to leg, thought about a single but belatedly changed his mind

8.3

Gillespie to Joyce, no run, defended again. Good tight bowling

8.4

Gillespie to Joyce, no run, he's found a good line and length now. Acting as an excellent foil to the pacy Bond at the other end

8.5

Gillespie to Joyce, FOUR, and as I say that, he drops short and wide, and Joyce clobbers him past point for a welcome boundary. Well played

8.6

Gillespie to Joyce, no run, more attacking intent from Joyce, but his attempted pull dribbles out to midwicket

Several emails so far, most of them bemoaning England's failure to pick Mal Loye. "Bring back Mal!" pleads Cody Clark. "At least he can flog some demoralizing sixes before he takes it on the chin." Boom boom

End of over 9 (4 runs) England 32/2 (RR: 3.55)

AJ Strauss    0* (0b)      SE Bond    4-2-5-2

9.1

Bond to Strauss, no run, short, fizzes past Strauss's chest as he sways out of line

9.2

Bond to Strauss, no run, short again but wider. Strauss keeps his bat inside the line

9.3

Bond to Strauss, FOUR, good strike. This time the timing and placement is just right, as the ball zips past a flailing short midwicket

9.4

Bond to Strauss, no run, better line and length

9.5

Bond to Strauss, no run, left alone outside off stump again

9.6

Bond to Strauss, no run, full and speared in towards off stump. Defended with a straight bat

End of over 10 (4 runs) England 36/2 (RR: 3.60)
AJ Strauss    4* (6b 1x4)      SE Bond    5-2-9-2
EC Joyce    14* (27b 2x4)      MR Gillespie    2-0-8-0

That's the end of the first powerplay. And immediately the umpires signal the start of the second one

10.1

Gillespie to Joyce, no run, short again, and Gillespie gets away with it once again. Pulled firmly, but straight to midwicket. England's intent hasn't been lacking so far, but their placement definitely has

10.2

Gillespie to Joyce, no run, fuller, and straighter. Defended into the covers

10.3

Gillespie to Joyce, no run, big swish of the bat, but mid-off tidies up with minimal fuss

10.4

Gillespie to Joyce, 3 runs, wider of the crease, and clipped through fine leg. A half-stop by Bond at leg-gully stops the boundary, but England get three nonetheless

10.5

Gillespie to Strauss, no run, fuller length from over the wicket, and defended

10.6

Gillespie to Strauss, no run, half an appeal as the ball pitches outside leg. Strauss is squared up as the ball deflects to gully

End of over 11 (3 runs) England 39/2 (RR: 3.54)
AJ Strauss    4* (8b 1x4)      MR Gillespie    3-0-11-0
EC Joyce    17* (31b 2x4)      SE Bond    5-2-9-2

Here's Franklin for another burst

11.1

Franklin to Joyce, no run, floated onto a full length, good stop by Vettori at mid-on stops another boundary. New Zealand have been keen in the field today

11.2

Franklin to Joyce, FOUR, no cutting that one off. Into position early, and eased through long-on by Joyce. Good shot

11.3

Franklin to Joyce, no run, good riposte, outside off stump and a flinched defensive shot as the ball fizzed by

11.4

Franklin to Joyce, no run, in the good channel again. Joyce makes to defend but is beaten again

11.5

Franklin to Joyce, 1 run, clipped off the hip, another single to the cause

11.6

Franklin to Strauss, 1 run, too full again from Franklin and that's worked easily into the leg-side for another single. And that's over

End of over 12 (6 runs) England 45/2 (RR: 3.75)
AJ Strauss    5* (9b 1x4)      JEC Franklin    4-1-23-0
EC Joyce    22* (36b 3x4)      MR Gillespie    3-0-11-0

12.1

Gillespie to Strauss, no run, defended again. Good waspish length

12.2

Gillespie to Strauss, no run, no width on offer there. Pushed into the covers

12.3

Gillespie to Strauss, no run, drifting onto the pads, but Strauss can't make clean contact with his attempted clip. He's not in the best of form

12.4

Gillespie to Strauss, (no ball) 1 run, oversteps, and Strauss steers that down to third man to escape the strike

12.4

Gillespie to Joyce, no run, fuller length but wider, left alone

12.5

Gillespie to Joyce, FOUR, the first genuinely attacking stroke of the day, and it pays handsome dividends for Joyce - down the track, smacked over the top for an excellent boundary

12.6

Gillespie to Joyce, no run, back on a good length to complete the over

And that's the end of my first burst as well. Here's a nauseatingly sprightly Martin Williamson

End of over 13 (6 runs) England 51/2 (RR: 3.92)
EC Joyce    26* (39b 4x4)      MR Gillespie    4-0-17-0
AJ Strauss    6* (13b 1x4)      JEC Franklin    4-1-23-0

It's all an illusion. Inside I am asleep ...

13.1

Franklin to Strauss, no run, on off stump, blocked into the off side

13.2

Franklin to Strauss, 1 run, angled through the vacant third slip area, deliberate shot but he had to squeeze that down there as it was a tad closer to him that he wanted

13.3

Franklin to Joyce, OUT, one step down the track, a shimmy to leg to give himself room, an ugly swish, a thin nick and a straightforward catch. England are now in deep trouble. Can we hear the sound of Duncan Fletcher on the phone to British Airways confirming the flights home tomorrow ...

EC Joyce c †McCullum b Franklin 26 (68m 40b 4x4 0x6) SR: 65.00

13.4

Franklin to Collingwood, 1 run, off the mark confidently, working the ball between mid-on and midwicket

13.5

Franklin to Strauss, no run, straight and full, driven back to the bowler but not timed and it barely has the legs to make it to Franklin in his follow-through

13.6

Franklin to Strauss, no run, outside off stump and left alone. 85mph (137kph) for all you speed men ...

All quiet inside the Gabba. The fun police don't have much to do ...hard to start a Mexican Wave when your neighbour is ten rows away

14.1

Gillespie to Collingwood, no run, punched into the off side, again not timed

14.2

Gillespie to Collingwood, no run, Collingwood back and across to defend

14.3

Gillespie to Collingwood, no run, outside off stump, Collingwood not interested in a nibble. 89mph (143kph)

14.4

Gillespie to Collingwood, 2 runs, even wider and this time Collingwood smacks it to the left of point, third man has to scurry round quite some way to field

14.5

Gillespie to Collingwood, no run, full on off stump, driven to mid-on where Vettori takes it on the bounce and underarms down the stumps at the non-striker's end. Not sure why, but it probably made him feel better

14.6

Gillespie to Collingwood, no run, wide and slightly short, no shot. Collingwood has to rebuild and so don't expect any risks for a while yet

The crowd waits on tenterhooks to see if New Zealand take the second Powerplay as the players take drinks. Miller, meanwhile, is off to have some supernoodles as he admits he hasn't been to bed for two days.

It is Powerplay No. 2

15.1

Franklin to Strauss, no run, driven to short extra cover where it is athletically stopped

15.2

Franklin to Strauss, FOUR, Strauss drives with an open face past the despairing dive of cover point

15.3

Franklin to Strauss, 2 runs, short, Strauss pulls from off stump, not really timed and Vettori shuffles round from deep midwicket to field

15.4

Franklin to Strauss, 1 run, clipped off his toes, Vettori again in quickly and a quick pick-up and throw causes chaos and Collingwood has to dive back to make his ground. Had the throw been accurate then he would have been a couple of yards short

15.5

Franklin to Collingwood, no run, beaten defending on the back foot, too high for any appeal to be taken seriously

15.6

Franklin to Collingwood, no run, driven to mid-off

Do marketing men sleep. We are corrected and told that England are flying home on Virgin not BA. Didn't Virgin refuse ... oh no, that was The Ashes they wouldn't take on board ... or was that just another PR stunt by their boss?

16.3

Gillespie to Strauss, 4 runs, driven through extra cover, he placed that into the gap sweetly, Vincent chased it down and pulled the ball up a yard inside the rope with a forward lunge ... but they ran four anyway

16.4

Gillespie to Strauss, SIX, banged in, Strauss onto that in a flash and he launches it into the crowd ... er, the empty seats ... over midwicket

16.5

Gillespie to Strauss, FOUR, leg side, flicked off his hips fine, too much so for long leg to be able to get round to stop

16.6

Gillespie to Strauss, no run, Strauss back, pushes it into the leg side but mid-on rushes in and no run

17.3

Franklin to Collingwood, FOUR, overpitched on leg stump, Collingwood effortlessly flicks it over the infield and all the way to the midwicket rope

Fleming send a man out to deep midwicket

17.4

Franklin to Collingwood, 1 run, dropped into space created by the fielding change and an ambled single

17.5

Franklin to Strauss, 1 run, short and Strauss doesn't get hold of a pull and it bobbles out to Vettori at deepish midwicket

Strauss now has his highest score of the series ... and Collingwood has only once passed 17!

17.6

18.3

Oram to Collingwood, no run, same line and length - slightly short on off stump - and Collingwood can do no more than block into the off

18.4

Oram to Collingwood, 2 runs, too much width and Collingwood steers it down to third man, wide enough of Bond to enable them to come back for an easy second

18.5

Oram to Collingwood, 1 run, similar shot, this time right at Bond and no chance of a second

18.6

Oram to Strauss, 1 run, whipped into the leg side. Strauss is actually looking confident for almost the first time in the series

19.2

Franklin to Collingwood, no run, Collingwood bangs it into the ground as he defends

19.3

Franklin to Collingwood, 2 runs, too full and Collingwood flicks that to deep midwicket. He plays that shot well, and that's why Fleming has had to reinforce that area

19.4

Franklin to Collingwood, FOUR, Franklin overcorrects, Collingwood throws everything at a wide one and the ball races to the backward point rope

19.5

Franklin to Collingwood, 1 run, tip and run with no alarms

19.6

Franklin to Strauss, no run, Strauss tries to cut through gully but hits it straight at the man there

"Another "interesting" Strauss fact to enliven proceedings," points out Richard Norman. "He has now overtaken Botham as the 13th highest one-day scorer for England. In this tour, any small triumphs should be seized on." Quite so, Richard, quite so

20.1

Oram to Collingwood, no run, patted into the off side, a crisp and quick shout of "no"

20.2

Oram to Collingwood, no run, dropped full, driven hard back at Oram who gets a hand on it - it was actually a catch low to his right - and deflects the ball into the stumps, but Strauss was just back

20.3

Oram to Collingwood, 1 run, placed into the off side for a single

20.4

Oram to Strauss, no run, again steered to his favourite gully area but that is well defended

20.5

Oram to Strauss, no run, pushed towards midwicket, Strauss sets off but is quickly sent back by Collingwood's shout

Vettori over the wicket to the left hander

21.3

Vettori to Strauss, 1 run, driven with ease to mid-on who is giving the one

21.4

Vettori to Collingwood, FOUR, Collingwood chips over the infield but gets far too much on it and it goes for a two-bounce four over wide long-on. The man down there got close but not close enough

21.5

Vettori to Collingwood, 1 run, flicked behind fine on the leg side

21.6

Vettori to Strauss, 2 runs, good running, turned no more than 25 yards towards square leg but into space

There's a feeling Vettori might be in for some tap today.

22.2

Oram to Collingwood, 2 runs, turned towards backward square leg, bisecting deep midwicket and long leg and so another two

Runs coming too easily for New Zealand's comfort at the moment

22.3

22.4

Oram to Collingwood, no run, into line, solid defensive shot with the full face of the bat

22.5

Oram to Collingwood, no run, back and a punch into the covers not timed. 73mph (118kph) which is only 13mph faster than Panesar!

23.2

Vettori to Collingwood, 1 run, no more than a defensive prod, but placed and a good, quick call means an easy one

Vettori scowls. Those kind of singles won't help his mood.

23.3

Vettori to Strauss, no run, outside off, Strauss leaves and McCullum can only parry as the ball kicks off a length

23.4

Vettori to Strauss, 1 run, flipped to midwicket

23.5

Vettori to Collingwood, no run, driven straightishly on the leg and a good dive by the man in saving the one does just that

24.2

Oram to Collingwood, no run, tight again, defended into the covers with a loud "NOO!"

24.3

Oram to Collingwood, 1 run, a fraction shorter and a bit of width, steered down to third man with a cross-batted deflection

24.4

Oram to Strauss, 1 run, the same but this time a left-handed version from Strauss. Good rotation of the strike

24.5

Oram to Collingwood, no run, slightly short, and a shovelled drive is cut off in Oram's followthrough. That's a long way for a tall man to stoop

24.6

Oram to Collingwood, no run, bouncer! A quick glance to the square-leg umpire confirms that that wasn't too short to be legitimate, and that's the end of a tidy over

25.2

Vettori to Strauss, 2 runs, clipped into the leg-side, and an untidy misfield allows them back for two. Vettori is justifiably miffed, although that did bobble unkindly for Vincent

25.3

Vettori to Strauss, 1 run, clipped into the leg-side again. Tip-and-run stuff

25.4

Vettori to Collingwood, 2 runs, nicely weighted stroke from Collingwood. Not enough power to reach a deep cover quickly, so two easy runs

25.5

Vettori to Collingwood, no run, tighter and better from Vettori. Defended

25.6

Vettori to Collingwood, 1 run, nurdled once more, picked up at midwicket to complete a nicely milked over for England. Vettori is a little miffed still

26.2

Oram to Strauss, 2 runs, short and that's well clobbered through midwicket, but a sliding stop on the boundary's edge cuts off a couple. Good fielding

26.3

Oram to Strauss, 3 runs, width on the off-side this time, and Strauss thumps that square - in the air for a while, but clear of a diving point. A little ragged from New Zealand at the moment

26.4

Oram to Collingwood, no run, better areas. Outside off, rising off a good length. Defended into the gully

26.5

Six on the off-side for Styris, four saving the single. He'll need to keep things tight with that sort of field

27.3

Styris to Strauss, no run, that was tight enough, pushed into the covers

27.4

29.4

29.5

31.2

31.3

31.4

32.3

Vettori to Collingwood, 2 runs, well steered into the leg-side. Good running from this pair once again, and that's another fifty for England. Collingwood removes his helmet, and waves his bat at the dressing-room, and well he might

32.4

Vettori to Collingwood, 2 runs, good measured lofted drive over cover. Didn't try to leather it, but placed it well

32.5

Vettori to Collingwood, 1 run, one more to the total, could have been hit a bit squarer perhaps

34.5

Vettori to Collingwood, FOUR, shot! Short, and clobbered through midwicket. Loose delivery

34.6

Vettori to Collingwood, 1 run, another single to the total. Good nurdling again

Justin Bowdidge, with some justification, points out: "In England's last game you said their nurdling for 1s and 2s was boring, dull and soporific (and probably a few other adjectives as well). Any comment on this game?" Well Justin, that nurdling did take place in the second innings, when England needed something well in excess of 300 for victory. It was, how can I put it, dull, soporific and counterproductive

That's better from England, ten off that over.

End of over 45 (10 runs) England 222/5 (RR: 4.93)
JWM Dalrymple    16* (16b 2x4)      JDP Oram    7-0-36-0
PD Collingwood    86* (110b 5x4)      SB Styris    8-0-36-1

Four men in the deep on the leg, none in saving the single

45.1

Styris to Collingwood, 1 run, Collingwood accepts the invitation and runs one to the midwicket region

Deep midwicket comes in to plug the gap, mid-off drops back

45.2

Styris to Dalrymple, 2 runs, paddled to square leg, between two fielders on the rope and so they get the second with ease

45.3

Styris to Dalrymple, 1 run, wide half volley, super stop diving to his left at point by Fleming saves four

45.4

Styris to Collingwood, FOUR, a swish and a top edge right over McCullum's head, no way to defend that

45.5

Styris to Collingwood, FOUR, made room, a bullet-straight drive along the ground and the men in the deep never had a chance

45.6

Styris to Collingwood, 2 runs, driven to the sweeper, again good running puts pressure on the fielder and they should not have got two there

Styris turns, snatches his cap and mutters "rubbish" to himself ... I think he was referring to the fielding more than his bowling.

End of over 46 (14 runs) England 236/5 (RR: 5.13)
PD Collingwood    97* (114b 7x4)      SB Styris    9-0-50-1
JWM Dalrymple    19* (18b 2x4)      JDP Oram    7-0-36-0

46.1

Gillespie to Dalrymple, 2 runs, driven to deep cover again, tumbling stop, an easy two

New Zealand's body language is not good ...lots of scowling and muttering.

46.2

Gillespie to Dalrymple, 1 run, straight drive but not hit as hard and only the one

46.3

Gillespie to Collingwood, 1 run, again hit down the ground, long-on in quickly

46.4

Gillespie to Dalrymple, 1 run, full toss, Dalrymple stepping to leg hits it high on the bat and it drops short of long-off

46.5

Gillespie to Collingwood, no run, full toss down the leg side and inexplicably no wide called ... it didn't hit anything and McCullum gives a wry smile like a boy who has got away with pinching a sweet

46.6

Gillespie to Collingwood, 1 run, smacked to long-on

A better over from New Zealand. Shane Bond to finish his allocation from the Stanley Street End.

End of over 47 (6 runs) England 242/5 (RR: 5.14)
PD Collingwood    99* (117b 7x4)      MR Gillespie    9-0-48-0
JWM Dalrymple    23* (21b 2x4)      SB Styris    9-0-50-1

47.1

Bond to Collingwood, 2 runs, pushed from outside off stump to long-on, a well run second as well

Collingwood's third one-day hundred and his second in Australia.

47.2

Bond to Collingwood, FOUR, lovely stroke, whipped from middle stump behind square on the leg

47.3

Bond to Collingwood, 1 run, Collingwood steps to leg and flat bats the ball over the top of the cover ring

47.4

Bond to Dalrymple, 1 run, slower ball which Dalrymple picked, waited for, and ran down fine to third man

47.5

Bond to Collingwood, OUT, leg-side yorker, Collingwood, stepping to the off, is bowled round his legs. He departs scowling at Dalrymple who dropped his bat at the non-striker's end as Bond was in his delivery stride ... and as the ball was delivered he was scrambling around in the dirt trying to pick it up!

PD Collingwood b Bond 106 (164m 121b 8x4 0x6) SR: 87.60

Collingwood walks off to a great reception, a fine innings, all the more so as he has only one score over 17 in the series before today.

47.6

Bond to Nixon, no run, straight slower ball which Nixon blocks

End of over 48 (8 runs) England 250/6 (RR: 5.20)
PA Nixon    0* (1b)      SE Bond    9-2-30-4
JWM Dalrymple    24* (22b 2x4)      MR Gillespie    9-0-48-0

48.1

Gillespie to Dalrymple, 1 run, pushed down the ground

Gillespie round the wicket to the left hander

48.2

Gillespie to Nixon, OUT, carbon-copy dismissal ... Nixon shuffles to the off to try to flick the ball to the on side and a full delivery clips his leg stump

PA Nixon b Gillespie 0 (3m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Liam Plunkett is the new man.

48.3

Gillespie to Plunkett, no run, missed an attempted drive on the front foot

48.4

Gillespie to Plunkett, 1 run, worked gently into the leg side

48.5

Gillespie to Dalrymple, 1 run, full toss, hammered back with interest, Gillespie sticks out his right boot and takes the pace off it as well as deflecting it to a fielder

48.6

Gillespie to Plunkett, 1 run, smeared through extra cover to the man on the rope

End of over 49 (4 runs) England 254/7 (RR: 5.18)
LE Plunkett    2* (3b)      MR Gillespie    10-0-52-1
JWM Dalrymple    26* (24b 2x4)      SE Bond    9-2-30-4

49.1

Bond to Plunkett, FOUR, wild swing, a thick edge over where the slips would have been and four all the way. Bond scowls but it was too short and too wide

49.2

Bond to Plunkett, 1 run, dropped slower ball clipped to Fulton at midwicket ... he moved about five yards but spilt the ball having done the hard work

49.3

Bond to Dalrymple, 2 runs, smacked to wide long-off, always two

49.4

Bond to Dalrymple, 1 run, slower ball again, Dalrymple opens the face and runs it to third man

49.5

Bond to Plunkett, FOUR, fast leg-side full toss (89.9mph - 144kph) which is just helped on tis way behind square for four

49.6

Bond to Plunkett, 4 runs, big hit high into space at to deep midwicket, they ran two but a wild throw gives another two more overthrow. That sums up some mediocre fielding from New Zealand and Bond is seething

A good recovery from England after they lost early wickets. Andrew Strauss and Paul Collingwood were the stars, both making their first fifty of the series and Collingwood going on to make his third ODI hundred. It's a good score but one which New Zealand will fancy, although the ball does tend to move around a bit here under lights.

End of over 50 (16 runs) England 270/7
LE Plunkett    15* (7b 2x4)      SE Bond    10-2-46-4
JWM Dalrymple    29* (26b 2x4)      MR Gillespie    10-0-52-1
