Commonwealth Bank Series - 2nd match

India v Sri Lanka

No result

1.15pm Righto, it's Chaminda Vaas to set off.

12.55pm Hello everyone and welcome to coverage of the second match in the CB Series where India and Sri Lanka, both visitors to Australia, are facing each other in Brisbane. The news is that India have won the toss and will bat, with Yuvraj Singh returning to the line-up.

We're going to hope for a full match today after the series opener, between the hosts and India was washed out much to five-wicket hero Brett Lee's chagrin.

A perfect balance for the two sides here, there's not much to separate them and so we're all set for a good contest. Sri Lanka have won one warm-up and lost one so far, and they've now got their eye in on Australian soil. Sanath Jayasuriya has been ruled to fit to play despite requiring stitches to his chin after being hit in one of the warm-ups.

If you missed Kumar Sangakkara's column earlier this week, here's your chance to catch up.

India look like this: 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Rohit Sharma, 5 Yuvraj Singh, 6 MS Dhoni 7 Robin Uthappa, 8 Irfan Pathan, 9 Harbhajan Singh, 10 Sreesanth, 11 Ishant Sharma.

While Sri Lanka are comme ca: 1 Upul Tharanga, 2, Sanath Jayasuriya, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Tillakaratne Dilshan , 6 Chamara Silva, 7 Chamara Kapugedera, 8 Ishara Amerasinghe 9 Chaminda Vaas, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Muttiah Muralitharan.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni at the toss said: "It looks like a better wicket, it's not very sticky. The forecast is rain, so it gets a bit worrying for the batsmen, so I think we will get batting again."

One change, Yuvraj is back for Manoj Tiwary. "The way Yuvraj has performed in Australia, not only with his bat but the ball is very good." He also confirms that RP Singh has gone back home for some rest, and will miss the rest of the series.

Here's Mahela Jayawardene. "I would have preferred to bat, but it's always good to start the tournament. Looking forward to it, it looks a very good game. Hopefully there won't be too many interruptions and we can get a decent game."

And on Ishara Amerasinghe: "He's got some pace in him. He's been around a while and has been bowling well in the last six months in our domestic cricket so we thought it would be a good chance for him, especially as we don't have Dilhara [Fernando]."

Reflecting on the two-Test drubbing Australia dished out in November here. "We tried very hard, but those guys were very good. We always came back strongly in the second innings in the Tests, it wasn't good enough. We've learned a lot and hopefully we can come back stronger."

Let's find out now, then. Oh, and just before we do here's some fantasy cricket that you could get involved in. It's Jenny Thompson by the way bringing you all the action.

0.1

Vaas to Sehwag, 1 run, shortish ball outside off, pushed into the gap through cover, where Jayasuriya tidies up and you can't help but notice the big white plaster on his chin

Just the one slip for Tendulkar

0.2

Vaas to Tendulkar, no run, on off, looks to turn it to the leg-side but checks the shot when he realises it's fuller than he expect

"India. India! India. India!" echoes round a hollow Gabba

0.3

Vaas to Tendulkar, 1 run, presses forward to defend outside off, the blade skewing a touch and the ball runs down to third man

0.4

Vaas to Sehwag, 1 run, squares him up outside off with a rising ball which crashes off the outside edge just by the splice and runs down to Malinga who slinga-s that one back in

A gully comes in and now there's a first and third slip in

0.5

Vaas to Tendulkar, no run, watchful, Tendulkar leaves that one wide of off, he took one step forward and then shouldered arms

0.6

Vaas to Tendulkar, 1 run, across the right hander, Vaas bowling over by the way, a touch of width outside off, worked to point off the front foot

End of over 1 (4 runs) India 4/0 (RR: 4.00)
SR Tendulkar    2* (4b)      WPUJC Vaas    1-0-4-0
V Sehwag    2* (2b)

It should be Malinga to open from the Members' End and it is indeed he

1.1

Malinga to Tendulkar, no run, good swing first up for Malinga, the ball gently arcing away as it pitches on a good length, and defended on the frotn foot, the bat slightly away from the pads

1.2

Malinga to Tendulkar, 1 run, on off, a good length, but well worked with a whip of the wrists pressed off the back foot behind square

1.3

Malinga to Sehwag, no run, a good lick, 145.3kph, good length, good line, not much wrong with that one, swinging away, squaring him up on the back foot

1.4

Malinga to Sehwag, no run, on off, rises, defended back down off the back foot into the short cover region

1.5

Malinga to Sehwag, no run, swing away again, but enough width down off for the batsman to jump into the line and bunt it off the back foot with a drive to point

1.6

Malinga to Sehwag, no run, outside off, crashed into the covers off the back foot, picked up easily by the fielder and this one rounds off another good over

Good start for the Sri Lanka bowlers, India's batsmen just taking their time to ease themselves in

End of over 2 (1 run) India 5/0 (RR: 2.50)
V Sehwag    2* (6b)      SL Malinga    1-0-1-0
SR Tendulkar    3* (6b)      WPUJC Vaas    1-0-4-0

2.1

Vaas to Tendulkar, no run, pushed across the right hander, who waits on the back foot and presses back down

2.2

Vaas to Tendulkar, FOUR, slightly overpitched, Tendulkar was almost late on the shot but presses forward nothing more than a forward defence which pings off and rockets through point. Save your legs

2.3

Vaas to Tendulkar, no run, on off, Tendulkar gets over the ball and looks to work the ball to short midwicket, where it's picked up immediately

Vaasy, as his team-mates call him, wants a change in the field, taking the slip out

2.4

Vaas to Tendulkar, no run, huge shout for one which swings back and hits him dead straight but perhaps a touch high. Rudi Koertzen certainly thinks so

2.5

Vaas to Tendulkar, 2 runs, slight stray on to middle and leg, and the batsman creeps over the ball, tucking it to short midwicket off the front foot

2.6

Vaas to Tendulkar, 2 runs, swing back into him, and a push to the covers brings up a single despite a confusing call of "No!", a misfield allows the overthrow

End of over 3 (8 runs) India 13/0 (RR: 4.33)
SR Tendulkar    11* (12b 1x4)      WPUJC Vaas    2-0-12-0
V Sehwag    2* (6b)      SL Malinga    1-0-1-0

3.1

Malinga to Sehwag, 2 runs, on off and whipped into the midwicket region with something of a disco flick - a bit of a shimmy and a dazzle into the leg-side

3.2

Malinga to Sehwag, 1 run, on off, good length, worked into short midwicket and they look for the single

3.3

Malinga to Tendulkar, no run, devious swing away outside off, good length, and the batsman moves over to push on the front foot

3.4

Malinga to Tendulkar, 1 run, shuffled in on middle and leg, rising a touch, clipped with a bit of edge into short midwicket, the batsman shuffled down, and both shuffled through

Top allround shuffling

3.5

Malinga to Sehwag, no run, on off stick this time, again a sliver high, dabbed down off the back foot

3.6

Malinga to Sehwag, no run, on middle and leg, a tad short, the batsman looks to brush the ball to square leg but doesn't quite get the room and ends up awkwardly squirting it into the leg-side

End of over 4 (4 runs) India 17/0 (RR: 4.25)
V Sehwag    5* (10b)      SL Malinga    2-0-5-0
SR Tendulkar    12* (14b 1x4)      WPUJC Vaas    2-0-12-0

4.1

Vaas to Tendulkar, no run, on middle and leg, the batsamn looks to work it into short midwicket

4.2

Vaas to Tendulkar, no run, across him again, slower ball, swinging again, Tendulkar presses to the covers and Sehwag - not the fastest man ever - was backing up a long way. He got back in his crease without too many alarms despite Kapugedera's direct underarm but that may wake him up at least

4.3

Vaas to Tendulkar, FOUR, lovely shot that one, Tendulkar out of his crease, meets the ball outside off, opening the face and finds the gap through cover

4.4

Vaas to Tendulkar, no run, a huge appeal for a full one, which swung late and trapped him low, but also sounded like it took a woody click, not to mention it was missing leg too after nipping off the seam

4.5

Vaas to Tendulkar, no run, comes outside off, more aggressive intent, looks to drive to cover but checks the shot

4.6

Vaas to Tendulkar, 3 runs, a fraction short on off and not for the first time today it's taken from the off-side and whipped through midwicket

End of over 5 (7 runs) India 24/0 (RR: 4.80)
SR Tendulkar    19* (20b 2x4)      WPUJC Vaas    3-0-19-0

A man comes from short midwicket to short cover

5.1

Malinga to Tendulkar, no run, on middle and leg, worked out on the front foot to Jayasuriya at square

5.2

Malinga to Tendulkar, no run, smoothed in at 146.3 kph outside off, whirred on to the dime, and pushed forward by the batsman

5.3

Malinga to Tendulkar, 1 run, on off and middle, Tendulkar again favours switching the ball to leg, whipping it through the 45

The pitch shows signs of being excellent for batting

5.4

Malinga to Sehwag, 1 run, short outside off, worked easily through deep backward point

5.5

Malinga to Tendulkar, no run, outside off, width, cut hard off the back foot down into the ground and up to the juggling Dilshan at gully, who collects and thinks of shying down

5.6

Malinga to Tendulkar, no run, outside off, short, the batsman thinks of pulling but pulls out of the shot instead

End of over 6 (2 runs) India 26/0 (RR: 4.33)
SR Tendulkar    20* (25b 2x4)      SL Malinga    3-0-7-0
V Sehwag    6* (11b)      WPUJC Vaas    3-0-19-0

6.1

Vaas to Sehwag, no run, late swing back into the batsman who leaves it nearly too late to chop down in front of off

Vaas' figures don't really reflect how threatening he's bowled so far

6.2

Vaas to Sehwag, 2 runs, on middle, not much room, but the batsman easily works off the hips to midwicket

6.3

Vaas to Sehwag, no run, outside off, played down off the back foot into the covers

6.4

Vaas to Sehwag, 1 run, played very late outside off, working down through to third man

6.5

Vaas to Tendulkar, 1 run, outside off, a huge drive is belted to cover, quality fielding with a dive to the right

6.6

Vaas to Sehwag, FOUR, another edge, the batsman squaring up to that one and Muralitharan tries to tidy that one up with his feet on the boundary

HRG pops up. "For the first time in the history of one-day games, rival teams comprise two players who have played 400-plus matches. Tendulkar is playing his 409th one-day game while Jayasuriya is playing his 404th. Nod to Statsguru.

7.1

Malinga to Tendulkar, no run, outside off, left alone

7.2

Malinga to Tendulkar, no run, that one was going over

7.3

Malinga to Tendulkar, no run, good wheels from Malinga there, firing in outside off, some movement off the seam, the ball carrying through, skidding on like lightning off the pitch

7.4

Malinga to Tendulkar, no run, the batsman didn't know too much about that one, waiting for he one outside off and chopping down off the back foot, with an inside edge that avoided the stumps

7.5

Malinga to Tendulkar, 3 runs, too wide from Malinga, allowing the batsman to cut hard off the back foot, Vaas racing round to tidy that up, stops it dead inside the rope and wings it back in. Excellent work

7.6

Malinga to Sehwag, FOUR, a low and quick bullet on middle and leg, taken well off the toes through the 45

Pretty humid out there and the batsmen need a drink already. 90% humidity today in Brisbane.

45.4

Vaas to Gambhir, 1 run, low full toss, driven out to mid-on

45.5

45.6

Vaas to Gambhir, FOUR, turned off the legs again through fine

End of over 46 (11 runs) India 226/4 (RR: 4.91)
G Gambhir    82* (90b 7x4 1x6)      WPUJC Vaas    9-0-61-0
MS Dhoni    68* (82b 3x4 1x6)      ST Jayasuriya    3-0-24-0

Can Gambhir go on to make his hundred? Murali's last over coming up, can he get the breakthrough now?

46.1

Muralitharan to Dhoni, no run, on leg, tried to turn into the leg-side

46.2

Muralitharan to Dhoni, no run, on the front foot, defended forward

46.3

Muralitharan to Dhoni, 1 run, outside off, played to point

46.4

Muralitharan to Gambhir, 2 runs, straight, a touch short, the batsman moves back to make room and drive over cover

46.5

Muralitharan to Gambhir, FOUR, straight and again he gives himself room, this time late cutting through third man, a neat dab for four

46.6

Muralitharan to Gambhir, 1 run, on leg, turned down through fine

End of over 47 (8 runs) India 234/4 (RR: 4.97)
G Gambhir    89* (93b 8x4 1x6)      M Muralitharan    10-0-51-2
MS Dhoni    69* (85b 3x4 1x6)      WPUJC Vaas    9-0-61-0

47.1

Malinga to Gambhir, 2 runs, short and pulled out, nearly holing out at deep midwicket but bounced just in front of Kapugedera

47.2

Malinga to Gambhir, 1 run, short, backed away and smashed through short midwicket

47.3

Malinga to Dhoni, FOUR, yorker outside leg and that's so well pinpointed, Dhoni hardly blinking as he whipped it away off his legs for another super shot

47.4

Malinga to Dhoni, 1 run, outside leg again, another flick again

47.5

Malinga to Gambhir, no run, outside off, the batsman rocking back, too far as it happened because he was nowhere near the would-be launch over long off, his head well away from the ball

47.6

Malinga to Gambhir, no run, outside off, very full, cut low to point

This partnership worth 159 off 163 and has turned India's innings around

End of over 48 (8 runs) India 242/4 (RR: 5.04)
G Gambhir    92* (97b 8x4 1x6)      SL Malinga    9-1-43-1
MS Dhoni    74* (87b 4x4 1x6)      M Muralitharan    10-0-51-2

48.1

Vaas to Dhoni, 2 runs, slower ball first up, full too, and dug out straight through mid-off

48.2

Vaas to Dhoni, 2 runs, outside off, not too much wrong with the width, and driven out to mid-off easily

48.3

Vaas to Dhoni, no run, outside off, deceived Dhoni who tried to sweep from outside off

Rain's starting to fall, folks

48.4

Vaas to Dhoni, FOUR, outside off again and Dhoni picks that one up well, driving over long-on for a one-bounce four, no sign of the discomfort there

48.5

Vaas to Dhoni, 2 runs, low full toss, boomed out to long-off where Dilshan travels 15 or so metres to cut it off

48.6

End of over 49 (11 runs) India 253/4 (RR: 5.16)

49.1

Malinga to Dhoni, 1 run, good yorker, straight, but driven out to mid-on

49.2

Malinga to Gambhir, FOUR, outside off, not a terrible length, rocks back and drives well, wide of mid-off, to inch closer to the hundred

Top timing

49.3

Malinga to Gambhir, FOUR, outside off and pulled hard through midwicket for a great century off 99 balls, with ten fours and a six

He's made Sri Lanka pay for that drop earlier

49.4

Malinga to Gambhir, 2 runs, driven high on the off-side, over cover

49.5

Malinga to Gambhir, 1 leg bye, outside off, across his stumps and plays somehow into the off-side

49.6

Malinga to Dhoni, 2 runs, outside off, driven hard off the back foot - literally, his front foot was high in the air - and they come back for two

Well, India owe everything to Gambhir and Dhoni who have put on ten runs an over for the last ten overs to boost them to a very competitive 4 for 267 on this track. Commendable effort from the pair who were just shy of a 200-run stand. Sri Lanka's bowlers did a fine job for the majority of the innings but will now look to their batsmen to try to overhaul the total. It promises to be an excellent chase so do join us again shortly.

End of over 50 (14 runs) India 267/4
