Commonwealth Bank Series - 4th match

Australia v India

India won by 5 wickets (with 25 balls remaining)

Hello and a very warm welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the 2007-08 CB Series. Its game four and Australia are taking on India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

This is Jamie Alter, your commentator today, with Sajan Nair on scoring.

But enough about us. Word from the middle is that Australia have won the toss and they will be batting, rather unsurprisingly, given the hard, flat nature of his MCG surface. They've made two changes, with Brad Haddin and Stuart Clark in for James Hopes and Brad Hogg.

India's captain says he would have batted first too. India are unchanged.

There's a steady trickle of fans entering on Sunday morning. I'd expect it to fill up, with a nice, gentle breeze blowing across the G. The pitch looks better than the one used for the Twenty20 game: its drier and harder. Perhaps a bit of turn and some swing in the evening. Batting first was always on.

The weather today is 20°C, mostly cloudy, with 41% humidity. Lets hope it stays good for an entire day's cricket.

Just to jog your memory, Australia are the only side to win a game; the first two games in Brisbane were washed out. India have four points and Sri Lanka two.

Remember, if you're not able to follow the game in front of a computer, you can read every word I type on your cell phones, right here . And don't forget fantasy cricket.

Shall we start? I'm ready. Here come the players and the two umpires, Rudi Koertzen and Simon Taufel. Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden in the middle. Sreesanth will start proceedings for India. Play ball!

0.1

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, 1 wide, and runs first up, as Sreesanth charges in and pitches down leg side, thats a wide to get Australia on the board

Solid noise around the ground

0.1

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, no run, better stuff, back of a length on off stump and Gilchrist defends to point

Two slips in for Gilchrist, by the way.

0.2

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, no run, tight stuff, good length on off stump and he pushes to cover this time

0.3

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, OUT, oh thats unlucky! Sreesanth pitches much fuller and gets it to swing in, Gilchrist is stuck to his crease as he drives and gets the thickest of inside-edges back onto his pads but umpire Koertzen doesn't pick it, instead slowly raising his finger to uphold Sreesanth's aggressive appeal and India have struck in the first over

AC Gilchrist lbw b Sreesanth 0 (2m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Gilchrist goes for a duck but that was a poor decision. Plenty of bat on that. Here's Ponting.

0.4

Sreesanth to Ponting, no run, back of a length and lifting outside off, Ponting gets in and leaves

0.5

Sreesanth to Ponting, no run, good length, bringing Ponting forward on the defensive to cover

0.6

Sreesanth to Ponting, no run, beaten! This one moves away off a length and Ponting pushes down the wrong line ... good ball to end the over

End of over 1 (1 run) Australia 1/1 (RR: 1.00)
RT Ponting    0* (3b)      S Sreesanth    1-0-1-1
ML Hayden    0* (0b)

To his credit, Gilchrist didn't show any dissent after that call from Koertzen. Ishant Sharma to bowl.

1.1

I Sharma to Hayden, 1 no ball, and he fires one very wide of the stumps, and he's overstepped

So Australia have their first free hit

1.1

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, this one angles across him, fairly wide, and Hayden cannot get there

1.2

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, this one as well, angled very wide across Hayden's stumps and he leaves

1.3

I Sharma to Hayden, FOUR, edged and dropped! Hayden pushes at one angling away this time and the ball flies off the outside edge but Uthappa at third slip cannot hold on after getting fingertips to it

1.4

I Sharma to Hayden, 1 wide, this one too is very wide of the stumps and Hayden can't get there

1.4

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, width again but no timing from Hayden, who plays it back to Ishant

1.5

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, tight delivery, hitting an off-stump length and coming back in this time, Hayden getting in line and playing it back to Ishant

1.6

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, back to the wider length, angling across, and Hayden leaves it be

You don't drop Hayden. Lets see what that costs India.

End of over 2 (6 runs) Australia 7/1 (RR: 3.50)
ML Hayden    4* (7b 1x4)      I Sharma    1-0-6-0
RT Ponting    0* (3b)      S Sreesanth    1-0-1-1

2.1

Sreesanth to Ponting, no run, back of a length delivery outside off, good carry too as Ponting leaves

2.2

Sreesanth to Ponting, 2 runs, a firm push to a fuller one outside off stump, though not perfectly timed, gets Ponting off the mark, just squirting the gap at cover

2.3

Sreesanth to Ponting, 1 run, he drives off the front foot again, this time uppishly and streakily through the gap at backward point, to a slightly wider one

2.4

Sreesanth to Hayden, no run, good length just outside off stump, he drives it to extra cover

2.5

Sreesanth to Hayden, FOUR, top shot, a typical Hayden shot to a gift-wrapped half-volley, driven firmly on the up through a diving extra cover

2.6

Sreesanth to Hayden, no run, same stuff, driven harder this time and thats why he couldn't beat mid-off

End of over 3 (7 runs) Australia 14/1 (RR: 4.66)
ML Hayden    8* (10b 2x4)      S Sreesanth    2-0-8-1
RT Ponting    3* (6b)      I Sharma    1-0-6-0

3.1

I Sharma to Ponting, 1 run, full on off stump, bit of swing, Ponting shuffles across and drives, mistiming the shot to midwicket but calling for the one immediately

3.2

I Sharma to Hayden, FOUR, wow, thats a shot, just a full face of the bat to another overpitched delivery and the ball races away back past the stumps and mid-off

3.3

I Sharma to Hayden, 2 runs, back of a length, comes back in, pushes into the cover and sets off, and he comes back for the second after an overthrow from Sehwag at mid-off

3.4

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, back of a length, moving away, good carry, Hayden shoulders arms

3.5

I Sharma to Hayden, (no ball) FOUR, edged for four, as Hayden drives hard at a no-ball and gets another thick outside edge well over a leaping second slip ... Ishant's over-stepping woes continue

3.5

I Sharma to Hayden, 1 no ball, another no-ball! Ishant bowls a decent delivery, slower and full on the stumps and Hayden can only drive it back to him ... but this is ridiculous

Now he bails out of his run-up near the stumps, to collect himself. Gives Hayden time to size things up.

3.5

I Sharma to Hayden, FOUR, and he connects, swinging one across from off stump and beating mid-on

3.6

I Sharma to Hayden, 1 run, overpitched outside off stump, he drives to extra cover for one

Thats a very expensive over from the rookie.

End of over 4 (18 runs) Australia 32/1 (RR: 8.00)

RT Ponting    4* (7b)      S Sreesanth    2-0-8-1

4.1

Sreesanth to Hayden, 1 run, full on off stump, drives it back between Sreesanth's legs for a single

4.2

Sreesanth to Ponting, 1 run, short of a length but too straight and he tucks it around the corner for one

Ding-dong: This is India's 675th ODI, a record, as they go past Pakistan.

4.3

Sreesanth to Hayden, 1 run, good length outside off and he pushes to extra cover, Gambhir collects and has a throw but misses and Harbhajan fumbles at midwicket

4.4

Sreesanth to Ponting, 2 leg byes, full on the pads and he flicks that out to deep backward square

4.5

Sreesanth to Ponting, no run, good length on off stump, Ponting gets in line and plays it back

4.6

Sreesanth to Ponting, no run, short one down the stumps, Ponting ducks and wide is not called

End of over 5 (5 runs) Australia 37/1 (RR: 7.40)
RT Ponting    5* (11b)      S Sreesanth    3-0-11-1
ML Hayden    25* (19b 5x4)      I Sharma    2-0-24-0

5.1

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, tries to flick, gets rapped on the pads, outside the line

5.2

I Sharma to Hayden, OUT, and he gets his man, pitching on a good length and just wide of off stump, Hayden goes for a big drive and gets a thin edge to Dhoni

ML Hayden c †Dhoni b I Sharma 25 (30m 21b 5x4 0x6) SR: 119.04

Thats a big wicket to Ishant, after taking a beating from Hayden last over. The openers are gone.

5.3

I Sharma to Clarke, 1 wide, thats full and wide down the pads and Clarke can't get bat on it

5.3

I Sharma to Clarke, no run, gets forward and drives a good length ball to Gambhir at cover

5.4

I Sharma to Clarke, 3 runs, fractionally overpitched on the stumps and Clarke taps it back down the pitch, awkward bounce beats Ishant and Sehwag dives to haul it back in on the ropes

5.5

I Sharma to Ponting, 3 runs, gets forward to a good length one and pushes into the gap at cover-point, really leaning into that one and then running hard for three

Just one slip in now

5.6

I Sharma to Clarke, no run, thats a better length, getting Clarke to defend off the front foot

Slightly erratic over but he got rid of Hayden, who looked good. So the drop didn't cost all that much.

End of over 6 (7 runs) Australia 44/2 (RR: 7.33)
MJ Clarke    3* (3b)      I Sharma    3-0-31-1
RT Ponting    8* (12b)      S Sreesanth    3-0-11-1

6.3

Sreesanth to Clarke, 2 runs, too straight and he gets back to turn it to midwicket for a brace

6.4

Sreesanth to Clarke, no run, tad slower, he drives hard and mistimes it to mid-off, who dives to stop

One slip moves out, Uthappa comes to short midwicket

6.5

Sreesanth to Clarke, no run, straight again, he gets back and works it to Rohit at square leg

6.6

Sreesanth to Clarke, no run, back of a length on off stump, Clarke gets in line and defends

End of over 7 (3 runs) Australia 47/2 (RR: 6.71)

RT Ponting    9* (13b)      I Sharma    3-0-31-1

Ishant to Ponting. Interesting contest.

7.1

I Sharma to Ponting, no run, back of a length on off stump, good lift, he gets back and defends

7.2

I Sharma to Ponting, OUT, edged and gone! Ishant wins the battle again! Its that same, nagging, back of a length delivery outside off stump that gets Ponting up and pushing at it, undone by the extra bounce, and presenting an easy catch into slip's lap

RT Ponting c Tendulkar b I Sharma 9 (39m 15b 0x4 0x6) SR: 60.00

Ishant breaks into a beaming smile as his team-mates mob him. Ponting furrows his brow and storms off. Ishant has had his number whenever he's come on and bowled to him. Australia three down. Enter Symonds.

7.3

I Sharma to Symonds, no run, back of a length outside off stump, Symonds shoulders arms

7.4

I Sharma to Symonds, 1 run, back of a length again, seaming back in, Symonds gets back and uses the soft hands to pick up a sharp single in front of point

7.5

I Sharma to Clarke, no run, much fuller and he gets to the pitch, driving into the covers

7.6

I Sharma to Clarke, 1 run, short and a tad too wide, Clarke gets over it and cuts to backward point

8.1

Sreesanth to Clarke, 1 run, straight on the stumps and he shuffles across, working one to midwicket

That raises the 50 to some good cheer.

8.2

Sreesanth to Symonds, no run, good bounce, fairly nipping up off a length and getting Symonds airborne, doing well to keep the bat down

8.3

Sreesanth to Symonds, 1 wide, shorter one, over Symonds' left shoulder, and Koertzen calls it wide

8.3

Sreesanth to Symonds, no run, short of a length on the stumps, he gets up and keeps it down to square leg

8.4

Sreesanth to Symonds, 1 bye, slower ball, back of a length and wide enough for him to leave, a fumble allows one

8.5

Sreesanth to Clarke, no run, back of a length outside off stump, he gets back and defends

8.6

Sreesanth to Clarke, no run, back of a length, coming in, Clarke watchfully defends to cover

Second Powerplay taken. Irfan Pathan introduced into the attack.

10.1

Pathan to Symonds, 1 run, fraction short and Symonds brings the bat down hard over it, very close to the body but he does well to chop it through gully for one to third man

10.2

Pathan to Clarke, FOUR, thats rubbish, drifting onto the pads and Clarke helps it to fine leg

Pathan stands there and winces. Looks down at the pitch and turns back.

10.3

10.4

Pathan to Clarke, no run, again on leg stump, Clarke mistimes his shot back to Pathan

10.5

Pathan to Clarke, no run, thats the area, hitting a length and angling it away from Clarke, who flirts from the crease and misses

10.6

Pathan to Clarke, no run, back to a full length, Clarke drives well but straight to Harbhajan at cover

Pathan a bit over the place in his opening over.

11.1

Sreesanth to Symonds, FOUR, fractionally overpitched and Symonds picks his gap superbly, driving from the crease and piercing extra cover

11.2

Sreesanth to Symonds, 1 run, shorter one, he gets up and over it, dabbing through gully for one

11.3

Sreesanth to Clarke, no run, good length but too straight, Clarke shuffles and works it to midwicket

11.4

Sreesanth to Clarke, no run, good shot, a firm straight drive that hits the stumps at the other end

11.5

Sreesanth to Clarke, no run, good length and wide, bit of movement away, Clarke sizes it up and leaves be

11.6

So, India have bowled out Australia for 159 in 43.1 overs. Ishant leads his team-mates off the field. A great effort from India, thanks to their seamers, who now need 160 to notch their first win of the CB Series. Only Hussey holding the innings together with an unbeaten 65. We will have an extended break for lunch, I'd say about an hour, but do come back and join Sajan and myself for the second innings.

Plenty of queries as to when Australia were last bowled out inside 50 overs. Well, not long ago, actually - they were dismissed for 193 by India in Mumbai as recently as October 17, 2007. Before that, New Zealand got them for 148 in 49.3 overs on February 16. The last time they failed to bat out 50 overs in Australia was a week before that when, at this very ground, they were bowled out by England for 252 in 48.3 overs. England also dismissed them for 200 in 38.5 overs at the SCG on February 2, so thats four times in 2007. Going back further, they were bowled out for 93 in 34.3 overs by South Africa on March 3, 2006 in Cape Town. Hope that answers the tons of emails coming in. Goodbye for now.

Nope, there's no escape for me. People want to know when India last beat Australia at the MCG. Well it was on January 31, 1986. Now can I get some lunch?

And umm ... by the way ... Australia lost all the above mentioned games.
