Commonwealth Bank Series, 6th Match: Australia v Sri Lanka at Perth, Feb 15, 2008
Australia won by 63 runs
15 February 2008 - day/night match (50-over match)

1.25pm Phenomenal atmosphere as Gilchrist comes in to bat for the last time at his home patch after Ponting won the toss and batted.

Australia 1 Matthew Hayden, 2 Adam Gilchrist (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Andrew Symonds, 6 Michael Hussey, 7 James Hopes, 8 Brett Lee, 9 Brad Hogg, 10 Mitchell Johnson, 11 Nathan Bracken.

Sri Lanka 1Tillekaratne Dilshan, 2 Sanath Jayasuriya, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Chamara Kapugedera, 6 Chamara Silva, 7 Nuwan Kulasekera, 8 Chaminda Vaas, 9 Lasith Malinga 10 Farveez Maharoof 11 Muttiah Muralitharan.

Ishara Amerasinghe hasn't recovered in time for this match.

1.15pm There's a banner up which says: "Gilly, made at the WACA." It is, of course, his last international at his home ground. There are murals for fans to sign and 10,000 "Thx Gilly" gloves will be given out.

1.00pm It's overcast at the WACA but the forecast is clear. Play will begin in half an hour's time.

12.45pm local time Hello everyone and welcome along to coverage of Australia's latest CB Series match against Sri Lanka in Perth. A win for the visitors would see them top the table while Australia are itching to get another one over on them after beating them last week. Australia are the favourites as well.

Look out Ricky Ponting, meanwhile. His opposing captain Mahela Jayawardene said yesterday that Ponting was going to be their target and that they would also seek out Australia's other batting frailties. That's fighting talk.

No team or toss news as of yet but I'll bring you them ASAP, I being Jenny Thompson, welcome.

Vaas to Gilchrist, no run, short on off, defended on the back foot into the covers

4.2

Vaas to Gilchrist, no run, short on off again and played back down

4.3

Vaas to Gilchrist, 1 run, shortish ball on off, pushed towards mid-off and calls them through for the single, it's a far from comfortable one though, mind, as Jayasuriya comes round and throws towards the non-striker's sticks

4.4

Vaas to Ponting, no run, on off, short, and played out to point in a half-defensive manner

4.5

Vaas to Ponting, no run, across the right hander who comes down without convincing as his bat skews in his hands as he defends on the front foot

4.6

Vaas to Ponting, no run, defended again

More good bowling from Sri Lanka, Ponting yet to get off the mark and yet to get into double figures this series

5.2

Malinga to Gilchrist, no run, outside off, driven to mid-off and there's no chance of a run

5.5

5.6

Malinga to Ponting, 1 wide, a height-related wide, banged in very short and it goes very high - more than a metre above his head even if he was standing up, but Ponting ducks just for good measure

5.6

Malinga to Ponting, 1 run, no appeal as the ball cuts back in from outside off and catches the inside edge

End of over 6 (7 runs) Australia 24/1 (RR: 4.00)

Vaas to Ponting, no run, pushed past him again, the ball moving away off the pitch wider past the right hander whose leave is extravagant

6.4

Vaas to Ponting, 3 runs, down on one knee to greet the ball outside off, swishes it with a flick through midwicket. He didn't have much room for that but it goes to the ropes

6.5

Vaas to Gilchrist, 1 run, outside off, rising delivery, worked wide of mid-off and they run through an easy single

6.6

Vaas to Ponting, FOUR, room outside off and Ponting launches into that one with a flaying, flowing drive through the covers. Great shot, he's already looking more comfortable

End of over 7 (8 runs) Australia 32/1 (RR: 4.57)

7.1

Malinga to Gilchrist, no run, on off, tidy delivery and defended on the back foot

7.2

Malinga to Gilchrist, no run, room outside off in theory but the length's too good, cramping Gilchrist whose hand comes off the bat as he looks to push to point

7.4

Malinga to Gilchrist, no run, pushed up there on off, played down

7.5

Malinga to Gilchrist, no run, on middle and off, well bowled again, and all the batsman can do is defend in front of his stumps

7.6

Vaas to Ponting, no run, driven hard to the covers, where it's snapped up

8.6

Vaas to Ponting, 1 run, turned off the legs to midwicket for the only single off the over

Here's HRG. "Ricky Ponting became the first batsman in the world to aggregate 10000 ODI runs while batting at number three, when he was on four in this innings. Ponting had an aggregate of 9996 runs prior to this game. . The next best is by Jacques Kallis who has 5917 runs." Check it out here.

Good game in prospect here, Sri Lanka keeping it tight so far, Australia squeezing out runs where possible

9.1

Malinga to Ponting, no run, outside off, driven hard to mid-off, but straight to the player

9.2

Malinga to Ponting, FOUR, terrific shot for Ponting, getting over the ball on the off-side and pushed in front of midwicket to shake off the single-figures bogey

9.3

Malinga to Ponting, 2 runs, a better delivery this time, Ponting caught in two minds going for the pull shot, cramped and pushed in front of midwicket

A very short midwicket comes in. There's also one slip in

9.4

Malinga to Ponting, 2 runs, got that one away with an inside edge in front of square, trying to drive forward. Malinga's bowling too straight - especially given his off-side field

9.5

Malinga to Ponting, FOUR, short ball banged in straight and Ponting somehow gets the bottom of the bat on it and he pulls it round through the 45

He took his eyes off that one, but it still travelled

9.6

Malinga to Ponting, no run, laced hard to point this time

Ponting's looking better than he has this series. Remember he's already got an ODI ton to his name this season, against New Zealand in Adelaide earlier this year so he's hardly in a total mire of form.

10.3

Vaas to Gilchrist, 1 run, pushed up there on a good line and length, driven back out through straight mid-off to bring up the fifty

A change into the attack now and here comes Maharoof, replacing Malinga

11.1

Maharoof to Gilchrist, no run, overpitched on off, a cracking shot of a forward drive to mid-off, the fielder doing really well to come round, dive and roll - that was Dilshan with fast hands

11.2

Maharoof to Gilchrist, SIX, hello, a controlled lofted drive over long-on that travels fast and flat two rows back

The fielder in the crowd juggled it on the fence and nearly ended up forward-rolling over the board

11.3

Maharoof to Gilchrist, no run, cuts hard to point

11.4

Maharoof to Gilchrist, 2 runs, flays hard straight to midwicket where Malinga tidies up now

11.6

Maharoof to Gilchrist, FOUR, short outside off, and ever so nearly a six as Gilchrist goes aerial again with another lofted drive, this time over straight long-on. He doesn't have to go does he?

The track's a very good one, by the way, and that's the fifty partnership

End of over 12 (12 runs) Australia 66/1 (RR: 5.50)

Vaas to Ponting, OUT, Ponting gets across but doesn't play either forward or back, instead guiding the ball to Jayawardene at first slip, who had predicted his downfall before this match

RT Ponting c Jayawardene b Vaas 25 (35m 25b 4x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

Great bowling by Vaas, who thought he had him last over, and yet again Ponting falls working the ball behind.

12.2

Vaas to Clarke, no run, superb delivery, how about that one for a greeter? Bangs it in just short on miffle and the ball was through him, nipping off and away from him. Cracker

12.6

Vaas to Gilchrist, 1 run, outside off and well bowled, slowed down a touch and the pace deceiving Gilchrist who drags an inside edge back past the leg stump

Very entertaining cricket out there, good batting but some good testing bowling too, well backed up by the fielders. Game on, as they say in darts

Change of bowling now, Kulasekera takes over from Maharoof who's been given an early blow

13.1

13.2

Kulasekara to Gilchrist, no run, on middle and leg this time, swivelled round to square, at least that was the intention, the ball instead dropping down off the edge

13.3

Kulasekara to Gilchrist, 1 run, slower ball, yorker too, well dug out towards straight long-on where there's some good, committed fielding there

13.6

Kulasekara to Clarke, no run, another play-and-miss rounds off a good over by the bowler, Clarke's feet once again trapped as he looks to lash through the covers

14.4

Vaas to Gilchrist, 1 run, right up there in front of off, played into the ground onto the leg-side with a powerless drive

14.5

Vaas to Clarke, no run, pushed across the right hander, who dinks to short cover on the back foot and shouts what sounds like "No, mate"

14.6

17.4

Kulasekara to Gilchrist, SIX, short and what a way to bring up the fifty, everyone's on their feet as he pulls hard, great eye there, in front of square

Malinga to Gilchrist, OUT, Gilchrist is finally gone, trying to loft one over long-off and took a leading edge to the covers, Kapugedera holding on this time over his head, having dropped him last over

AC Gilchrist c Kapugedera b Malinga 118 (194m 132b 9x4 3x6) SR: 89.39

Malinga to Hussey, 1 wide, left alone outside off, a wide veers wider

43.3

Malinga to Hussey, no run, pushed through down the channel

43.5

Malinga to Hopes, no run, comes forward, squares up and the ball takes an outside edge but safe

Check out this stat from my friend Scott. "That was the slowest strike rate for any of Gilchrist's 16 ODI centuries, previous lowest strike rate was 96.15 against South Africa in Sydney 1997-98. His best score at Perth, too, the previous was 116 also against Sri Lanka in 2005-06." Good work, Scotty.

44.1

Maharoof to Hussey, 2 runs, down the track, a mistimed pull again from him

44.2

Maharoof to Hussey, 3 runs, worked well for two through square and they collect an overthrow too, Jayasuriya has something to say about it, the bowler was nowhere near behind the stumps

44.3

Maharoof to Hopes, 1 run, right up there on the back foot, pushed into the covers and they run through the single

44.4

Maharoof to Hussey, no run, a swing and a miss for one outside off, Hussey trying to sweep to midwicket but gets it wrong

44.5

Maharoof to Hussey, 1 leg bye, down the track and again unconvincing, the ball catching his thigh guard as he swivels, the ball bouncing just in front of the keeper

44.6

Maharoof to Hopes, 1 run, goes for a huge aerial drive which isn't properly timed and so falls short of wide mid-on

End of over 45 (8 runs) Australia 217/5 (RR: 4.82)

Kulasekara to Hopes, OUT, lifted from a short one outside off high and higher - the ball catching the toe end - and goes on over towards Jayasuriya who clings on, making no mistake

JR Hopes c Jayasuriya b Kulasekara 2 (10m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 40.00

Hopes had to go for it in these closing stages. Sri Lanka's fielders appear to be picking themselves up after those drops just before. Hogg now, he can belt it

Hussey on strike, as they crossed last ball. Coming round the wicket now.

45.2

Kulasekara to Hussey, 1 run, the single is squeezed out to mid-off, so Hogg will face his first ball

45.4

Kulasekara to Hogg, 1 run, a single into the covers brings Hussey back onto strike

46.1

Maharoof to Hogg, no run, sharp bouncer well directed over middle, the batsman ducked accordingly

46.2

Maharoof to Hogg, 1 run, on middle and leg, tucked down off the back foot towards mid-off

46.3

Maharoof to Hussey, 1 run, on off and middle, shortish, tucked round to midwicket and they look for two

46.4

Maharoof to Hogg, 2 runs, backed away behind the stumps, smart piece of bowling, as the ball followed him and he tried to run it out off the bat through third man on the rise but took the glove

Just about evaded Sangakkara as the ball got a touch of top edge

46.5

Maharoof to Hogg, no run, short and straight again, the batsman once more tries to run it fine and nearly helps it into Sanga's gloves, but didn't quite connect

46.6

Maharoof to Hogg, no run, backs away and away and cuts hard but without completely timing it

End of over 47 (4 runs) Australia 225/6 (RR: 4.78)

Malinga to Hussey, SIX, outside off, slightly short, and Hussey launches that high and very straight, right over the long-off ropes

47.2

Malinga to Hussey, 1 run, tight ball, typical Malinga, up there on middle, defended forward

47.3

Malinga to Hogg, no run, banged in short, the batsman backs away and cuts into the covers

47.4

Malinga to Hogg, OUT, bowled him this time, Hogg backing away yet again and the perfect yorker cleans him up, clattering into all three stumps - strike.

GB Hogg b Malinga 5 (11m 10b 0x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

Sri Lanka have done well to keep the pressure on

47.5

Malinga to Lee, no run, good ball to greet Lee, short and sharp and Lee does well to sway back from it

47.6

Malinga to Lee, no run, short and bounces up off the glove, landing safe

End of over 48 (7 runs) Australia 232/7 (RR: 4.83)

    • MF Maharoof 10-0-53-1
48.1

Kulasekara to Hussey, OUT, Hussey looks to hit across the line rather than straight and his would-be pull goes up instead to the covers where Jayawardene sets himself to take a straightforward catch

MEK Hussey c Jayawardene b Kulasekara 25 (53m 28b 0x4 1x6) SR: 89.28

Sri Lanka turning the screw late on

48.2

Kulasekara to Lee, no run, outside off, horrible shot really, no footwork from Lee who swings and misses away from his body, aiming for the topspin lob

48.3

Kulasekara to Lee, 1 run, outside off and Lee's swing connects this time with a drive to long-off where a good defensive throw keeps them to a single

48.4

Kulasekara to Johnson, OUT, rising outside off, pushed out to mid-off and a straight throw from Dilshan crashes down the stumps to run out Johnson

MG Johnson run out 0 (2m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

48.5

Kulasekara to Lee, 1 run, worked into midwicket this time

48.6

End of over 49 (3 runs) Australia 235/9 (RR: 4.79)

    • NW Bracken 1 (1b)
    • B Lee 2 (5b)
    • KMDN Kulasekara 10-0-52-2
    • SL Malinga 9-1-47-3
49.1

Malinga to Bracken, no run, Bracken backs right away and was ready on the on-side but in came the slower ball and Malinga just slunk it down off, ever so nearly taking the stumps

49.2

Malinga to Bracken, no run, ungainly swing and miss, trying to work it to the on-side

49.3

Malinga to Bracken, 1 bye, follows him down leg, swing and miss from more backing away, they take the bye which is naughty and Sangakkara's huge underarm loop one-two with Malinga nearly results in the run-out at the non-striker's

49.4

Malinga to Lee, OUT, cleaned up with another excellent yorker to finish the tail off well, Lee backing away, and Malinga firing in on leg stump

B Lee b Malinga 2 (12m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

Great comeback job from Sri Lanka's bowlers there, Malinga ends with four well-deserved wickets. Good fielding throughout on the whole, with the exception of a few drops. Gilchrist did really well in his final ODI at the WACA with a well-worked hundred, replete with plenty of singles. But around the time when he was aiming for his ton, the run rate began to slow and Sri Lanka did well to keep the pressure on. Stay with us for the chase.
