Commonwealth Bank Series - 7th match

Australia v India

Australia won by 50 runs

Hello and Namaste to all of you who've turned up and tuned in, this is Jamie Alter, your commentator for the day, along with Raghav who will score the game, and you're reading game seven of the 2007-08 CB Series.

Its a hot Sunday, let me tell you. We're halfway through the tournament - in its final installment, by the way - and Australia lead the points tally with 12, followed by India, on 8. The pre-match news has been that Australia decided to rest Brett Lee, drafted in David Hussey as cover for Michael Clarke, and that Virender Sehwag is a doubtful starter today. Ricky Ponting's form would also worry the Australians.

India can take inspiration from their last game against Australia, at the MCG, where their pace bowlers seamed the ball around to cause plenty of trouble. That said, the Adelaide Oval is among the flatter surfaces in the country. So there should be plenty in it for the batsmen.

Despite Lee's absence, Australia have well-rounded bowling attack. Nathan Bracken is the leading wicket-taker in the series and Mitchell Johnson bowled brilliantly on Friday at the WACA. Stuart Clark's addition adds another swing quotient.

Toss: Ponting has won and unsurprisingly, decided to have a bat. Clarke passed a fitness test and will play. So no debut for David Hussey. India have made one change, bringing in Munaf Patel for Sehwag out with a side strain, so that means five bowlers. Munaf last played an ODI on August 27, 2007 in Birmingham. Mahendra Singh Dhoni spoke earlier about rotating his fast bowlers and this is a good test for Munaf.

Speaking of fast bowlers, I just heard that Tony Greig, on Channel 9, said it smacks of arrogance to rest Lee against India. Make your own calls on that.

"Its bloody hot," says Nagraj Gollapudi, our man at the ground. That equates to 35°C, clear, and 13% humidity. The crowd is walking in steadily, perhaps still busy with their Sunday brunch, so no buzz yet.

The pitch looks good for batting, but the little tinge of green suggests something in it for the bowlers. Expect a good total.

"Aaaah, it's nice and cool here," says Jenny, "in the air-conditioned press box. It's 38C today and local tennis and cricket has been called off."

Here come the umpires, so play is about to get started. Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden walk out. Huge roars, standing ovations and flag-waving agogo. Sreesanth has the new ball. Two slips, deep backward point, point, cover, mid-off, mid-on, square, long leg.

0.1

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, 2 runs, runs first up, as Sreesanth splays it on the pads and Gilchrist tucks it into the gap at square leg for a couple, to some cheer from the crowd

0.2

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, no run, back of a length this time but still on leg, Gilchrist cant beat midwicket

0.3

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, no run, goes for a booming extra-cover drive, to an inviting one outside off stump, but fails to connect by some margin

0.4

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, FOUR, gets some bat on that one, not timed to perfection but its into the gap at point and the ball runs away, remember the square boundaries are short in Adelaide

Sreesanth just overpitching the last two deliveries

0.5

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, no run, tidier delivery, back of a length and going across Gilchrist, who leaves

0.6

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, no run, good delivery, hits a length and comes in and Gilchrist defends it back

End of over 1 (6 runs) Australia 6/0 (RR: 6.00)
AC Gilchrist    6* (6b 1x4)      S Sreesanth    1-0-6-0
ML Hayden    0* (0b)

Ishant Sharma will take up duty from the Cathedral End. Two slips for Hayden.

1.1

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, hits a good length outside off and Hayden nearly inside-edges back onto his boot as he defends with an angled bat

It is roasting, but plenty of spectators sensible, slip-slap-slopped, and in sombreros.

1.2

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, good delivery, seaming across Hayden and getting some good lift too at 140ks and Hayden is beaten as he drives, one-handed

1.3

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, troubles him again with the angle, the ball going across him at pace and height and Hayden takes a hand off the bat as he initially goes fishing

1.4

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, this one's on the pads and Hayden flicks it to midwicket

1.5

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, goes across him again and he leaves this one go, comfortably

1.6

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, beaten from the crease as he plays at it, then takes a hand off the bat, to a ball shaping across him off a good length ... this is good bowling from the youngster

End of over 2 (maiden) Australia 6/0 (RR: 3.00)
ML Hayden    0* (6b)      I Sharma    1-1-0-0
AC Gilchrist    6* (6b 1x4)      S Sreesanth    1-0-6-0

Gilchrist walks down and taps a couple spots on the pitch

2.1

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, no run, back of a length outside off and he pushes it to point, watchfully

2.2

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, FOUR, good shot, an on-the-rise drive between two men at point, wasn't an overpitched delivery but Gilchrist made the room himself

2.3

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, no run, good delivery, getting sharp lift off a very nice seam position, Gilchrist pokes and misses as the ball leaves him

Second slip gone into short extra cover

2.4

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, no run, this time he covers his off stump and leaves one on a good length

2.5

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, no run, gets forward and drives on the up again, but straight to cover-point

India have kept the ball in the right areas so far

2.6

Sreesanth to Gilchrist, FOUR, smashed, as Gilchrist goes aerial past the man at short cover, just freed the arms and teed off very, very hard

End of over 3 (8 runs) Australia 14/0 (RR: 4.66)
AC Gilchrist    14* (12b 3x4)      S Sreesanth    2-0-14-0
ML Hayden    0* (6b)      I Sharma    1-1-0-0

3.1

I Sharma to Hayden, 2 runs, thats on the pads and Hayden's away, tucking to Harbhajan at midwicket

3.2

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, good length outside off stump and he leaves it alone

3.3

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, back of a length, good angle across Hayden, and he leaves it be

3.4

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, pitches outside leg and sits up, Hayden falls over in his attempted flick and Ishant does the fielding

3.5

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, goes chasing one and gets beaten, by that same lovely angle and bounce

Jen says: "On ABC they're talking about Ishant Sharma being "a find" for India, although he has come up through the junior ranks."

3.6

I Sharma to Hayden, 1 wide, just strives for too much and bowls it very wide of off stump

3.6

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, back of a length on leg stump, seams away and he's squared up, the ball rolls to cover

End of over 4 (3 runs) Australia 17/0 (RR: 4.25)
ML Hayden    2* (12b)      I Sharma    2-1-3-0
AC Gilchrist    14* (12b 3x4)      S Sreesanth    2-0-14-0

Sreesanth has been replaced by Munaf Patel.

4.1

Patel to Gilchrist, 1 run, a loosener outside off, short and rising, Gilchrist chases it and the ball goes just over backward point and out to third man

4.2

Patel to Hayden, no run, better stuff, back of a length outside off and its poked to backward point

4.3

Patel to Hayden, no run, pitches outside off and straightens, Hayden gets across and shoulders arms

4.4

Patel to Hayden, SIX, now where did that come from? Uff! Hayden just walks down the track and flays that with brute force rows back over deep midwicket

4.5

Patel to Hayden, no run, back of a length on off stump, this time he gets in line and defends

4.6

Patel to Hayden, no run, decent line, no room to work with and Hayden defends to cover

The game's live on terrestrial in Adelaide - they often don't do that unless the match is a sell-out, in a bid to get people to the ground, I'm told by Jenny.

End of over 5 (7 runs) Australia 24/0 (RR: 4.80)
ML Hayden    8* (17b 1x6)      MM Patel    1-0-7-0

5.2

I Sharma to Gilchrist, 1 no ball, good short one again, but he's overstepped, Gilchrist defends to point and then walks off towards leg to figure out what to do with the free hit

Ishant pulls out at the stumps, perhaps losing his rhythm. Gilchrist has a moment to plan.

5.2

I Sharma to Gilchrist, no run, doesn't do much in the and, not giving himself any room and digs out a well-directed delivery in the blockhole back to Ishant's left side

5.3

I Sharma to Gilchrist, OUT, first strike to India! Gilchrist doesn't move in his crease, just defending one that nips back in off a length and inside-edges back onto his stumps

AC Gilchrist b I Sharma 15 (30m 17b 3x4 0x6) SR: 88.23

That was well bowled and again, its Ishant who gets a big wicket. He continues to impress. Out walks someone who hasn't played him too well. Ponting's in a bit of a form slump but he did well in the Chappell-Hadlee Series of one-dayers just before Christmas. Two slips and a leg slip.

5.4

I Sharma to Ponting, no run, good pace and bounce, rising outside off stump and Ponting leaves

5.5

I Sharma to Ponting, 1 run, thats too straight and Ponting works it towards square leg for one

5.6

6.4

Patel to Ponting, FOUR, bang, thats four! Wasn't that short but Ponting pulls from outside off stump and smack through midwicket

6.5

Patel to Ponting, no run, whats that now? Ponting shapes to sweep, sort of standing up, swinging across the line and copping the ball in the midriff ... Munaf appeals but that cannot be out

6.6

Patel to Ponting, no run, slightly more orthodox defence, as he gets across and plays to midwicket

End of over 7 (4 runs) Australia 30/1 (RR: 4.28)

8.2

Patel to Ponting, 1 run, walks across his stumps and turns a straighter one to square leg

8.3

Patel to Hayden, no run, thats back of a length outside off stump and Hayden shoulders arms

There's a deep midwicket but no fine leg

8.4

Patel to Hayden, no run, gets forward and has to adjust his shot as the ball sits up, pushes to point

9.6

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, good ball, good leave, as Hayden shoulders arms to one shaping across

End of over 10 (2 runs) Australia 41/1 (RR: 4.10)
ML Hayden    13* (31b 1x6)      I Sharma    5-1-13-1

India opt for the second Powerplay

RT Ponting c RG Sharma b Patel 10 (24m 14b 1x4 0x6) SR: 71.42

45.1

Harbhajan Singh to Hogg, OUT, comes out, Harbhajan sees him coming and fires it full and flat, Hogg inside-edges back past leg stump and Clarke wants the single, Dhoni makes good ground and there really was no run there, so Hogg has to sacrifice his wicket for his senior partner as Harbhajan accepts the throw and does the needful

MJ Clarke c I Sharma b Pathan 79 (175m 108b 6x4 0x6) SR: 73.14

A fine innings come to an end. Pathan gets a third and India have a shot at keeping Australia under 200.

Pathan to Bracken, no run, almost another run out, as Bracken pushes one to gully, Johnson sets off but has to retract his paces and dive back inside

A packed offside field for Bracken

46.4

Pathan to Bracken, no run, swing and a miss! Bracken tries to go downtown but cannot connect

MG Johnson    7* (10b)      IK Pathan    10-1-41-4

Final ball coming up ...

49.6

I Sharma to Clark, 1 run, full on the stumps and Clark drives into the covers for one

So that single takes Australia to 203, an effort that came down to a handy partnership from Clarke and Hogg. Its been India's day so far, led once again by their seam bowlers. Ishant again caused early tremors and Pathan showed how crafty he can be in one-day cricket, reverse-swinging it to take 4 for 41. Clarke played a disciplined innings of 79 but it was again a disappointing effort from Australia's batsmen. We will have a short break, so stick around for India's reply.

End of over 50 (4 runs) Australia 203/9
SR Clark    8* (9b)      I Sharma    9-1-32-2
MG Johnson    9* (13b)      IK Pathan    10-1-41-4
