Commonwealth Bank Series - 1st final

Australia v India

India won by 6 wickets (with 25 balls remaining)

2.15pm The kick-off is but moments away, the anthems have been sung to - in some cases heartily, in most cases mumbles - and here come Gilchrist and Hayden who are beginning Australia's efforts to gain their 12th win in 12 against India at the SCG. Game on.

2.00pm Australia have won the toss and will bat. Hayden's back as expected, and Brad Haddin out, also as expected. Chawla is in and Munaf is out, also as expected.

"I think it's a good toss to win today," says Ponting. "Hopefully the batters can get through the new ball early on and we can post a good total. The surface is not quite really hard, so it will probably be good.

"We've been excited about this game for a while, we probably had our minds on it on Friday. I'm not too bad (fatigue-wise) as I've not spent too much time out there! Our record in big games speaks for itself."

Dhoni once again loses the toss. "At least I am consistent. If we can get those early breakthroughs that will help us. We will see how it goes. This is one of the wickets that's on the slower side so we can use two spinners." Dhoni on Chawla now: "He is a young talent and has done well in England then got injured."

"It's all about playing some good cricket," he adds. "Nothing much was expected of this side but we are in the finals."

1.45pm Ciao all and welcome along to coverage of the 1st final between Australia and India, who have been the best two teams of the three, though Sri Lanka left on a high on Friday. We've not seen the best cricket throughout, though there have been some good contests and the teams are hitting their straps heading into this game at the SCG today, even though Australia had a few batting wobbles on Friday.

Here's Nagraj Gollapudi. "After an eventful Mardi Gras celebrated its 30th, the rains came down early morning to wash away all the glitter and the litter on the streets but stopped just in time to allow the cricket to begin on time." Phew, thanks for that Nagraj. Sydney's wet summer just continues...

Nagraj adds this factlet: "India are, interestingly (likely), playing Piyush Chawla, ahead of Munaf Patel." Confirmation of teams - Matthew Hayden is likely to come back in after being rested last game - and the toss as soon as I have it. I being Jenny Thompson, hello, and hope you're enjoying your weekend.

0.1

Kumar to Gilchrist, no run, Praveen Kumar starts by landing the ball on a good length outside off, Gilchrist defends back down

0.2

Kumar to Gilchrist, 3 runs, strays on to the legs this time and Gilchrist doesn't miss it, tucking it off the legs and they come back for three as the ball races in front of midwicket on a fast outfield

0.3

Kumar to Hayden, no run, pushes the ball down off on a good length, Hayden lets the ball go through on the back foot first up

0.4

Kumar to Hayden, FOUR, overpitched on off and Hayden drives forward hard on the front foot back past the bowler through mid-off, treated that ball with some disdain

0.5

Kumar to Hayden, 1 run, a touch short this time outside off, and Hayden opens the face to run it down off the back foot to third man

0.6

Kumar to Gilchrist, no run, oh, a false shot from Hayden, looking to boost it through midwicket from way outside off and has swivelled through the shot way before the ball has got to him

Good start for Australia then

End of over 1 (8 runs) Australia 8/0 (RR: 8.00)
AC Gilchrist    3* (3b)      P Kumar    1-0-8-0
ML Hayden    5* (3b 1x4)

Here's Ishant Sharma and he stands tall, sizing up his opponent as Hayden asks for a slight sightscreen adjustment. Three slips in

1.1

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, across the left hander, hits a nagging length immediately and just outside off, the batsman shoulders arms

1.2

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, across the left hander again, who shoulders arms again as the ball kicks through on a good length, a wide enough angle for him to leave

1.3

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, a sharp delivery at 142.5kph, carries on well through to Dhoni as the ball pitches wide outside off and moves on wider, again Hayden leaves

1.4

I Sharma to Hayden, 1 wide, booms it wide again down the channel, just a touch too wide for the umpire's liking

You can see what Sharma's trying to do, though, push it across him to prompt the cover drive and take the edge

1.4

I Sharma to Hayden, 2 runs, but this ball's too much on the legs, the ball tickled off the pads and it races across the billiard-table surface to fine leg

1.5

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, pushed through on a good length and better line this time outside off

1.6

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, pushed down on a good length again, the batsman leaves

A good opening over there from Sharma, consistent as ever in his fledgling international career

End of over 2 (3 runs) Australia 11/0 (RR: 5.50)
ML Hayden    7* (9b 1x4)      I Sharma    1-0-3-0
AC Gilchrist    3* (3b)      P Kumar    1-0-8-0

One of the groundstaff runs on now with some sawdust, not for the bowler's run-up as would usually be the case, but for one or two holes at short midwicket (to the left hander)

2.1

Kumar to Gilchrist, no run, good one, straight, and forcing Gilchrist to defend down with a jump in line with middle and off

One slip now

2.2

Kumar to Gilchrist, FOUR, hey now, ahort and outside off and Gilchrist rocks back on and cuts hard through the covers, the ball goes all the way as he put all his muscle behind that one

2.3

Kumar to Gilchrist, 1 wide, a wide down leg-side this time, Gilchrist lets it go through

Not a great opening for Kumar

2.3

Kumar to Gilchrist, no run, on off and middle, better ball this time, defended on the front foot now

2.4

Kumar to Gilchrist, OUT, short ball on off and Gilchrist goes for the hook, not quite getting over the ball as it came on to him faster than antichipated and he scoops up to Yuvraj at mid-on who takes the catch cat-cool

AC Gilchrist c Yuvraj Singh b Kumar 7 (13m 7b 1x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

Gilchrist walks off to a rousing reception and India are all a-beam after knocking over one dangerman early. That will boost Kumar beyond measure

2.5

Kumar to Hayden, no run, just outside off, continues to stay over for the left hander, on a good length and he defends on the back foot

2.6

Kumar to Hayden, no run, shortish ball outside off, punched out to the covers

End of over 3 (5 runs) Australia 16/1 (RR: 5.33)
ML Hayden    7* (11b 1x4)      P Kumar    2-0-13-1
RT Ponting    0* (0b)      I Sharma    1-0-3-0

The India fans in the crowd have come alive and the drums are going hard

3.1

I Sharma to Ponting, no run, Ponting comes out to look to drive to the covers, but ends up adjusting to the good length and defending on the front foot

Two slips in for him

3.2

I Sharma to Ponting, no run, pushed on to the legs, pretty good length, pushed on the front foot out to short midwicket, more defensively than anything

3.3

I Sharma to Ponting, 1 run, back of a length outside off and Ponting pushes over wide of mid-on

3.4

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, rushed on to him, clipping the pad in line with middle, the ball had pitched outside leg

3.5

I Sharma to Hayden, 2 runs, a touch too straight on leg and Hayden brushes it out in front of square and they take the second through some good running

Two slips now, the third coming out to midwicket

3.6

I Sharma to Hayden, no run, good-length ball outside off, pushed out to mid-on

End of over 4 (3 runs) Australia 19/1 (RR: 4.75)
ML Hayden    9* (14b 1x4)      I Sharma    2-0-6-0
RT Ponting    1* (3b)      P Kumar    2-0-13-1

4.1

Kumar to Ponting, no run, chased round outside off

4.2

Kumar to Ponting, OUT, Ponting goes! The batsman looked to pull a short one round from outside off, the ball not quite getting up, and the inside edge crashes hard on to the sticks

RT Ponting b Kumar 1 (7m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 20.00

Dhoni's decision to open with Kumar is looking masterstrokish right now, Australia are in early trouble

Clarke comes into the batting attack now and two slips are crouching

4.3

Kumar to Clarke, no run, outside off, Clarke starts with a leave

4.4

Kumar to Clarke, no run, pushed through on a good length outside off

4.5

Kumar to Clarke, no run, defended on the back foot back to mid-off

4.6

Kumar to Clarke, FOUR, shortish ball on middle, driven off the legs through midwicket and that's a tidy shot to get off the mark

London calling. "It's the Sky Sports tv crew here," says Bryan Henderson. "We are covering the game from our London studios - it's 3.30am here." Good work guys, I expect it's cold your way in lovely Osterley, a place where I worked many lovely nightshifts for Sky so I feel your pain.

End of over 5 (4 runs) Australia 23/2 (RR: 4.60)
MJ Clarke    4* (4b 1x4)      P Kumar    3-0-17-2
ML Hayden    9* (14b 1x4)      I Sharma    2-0-6-0

Harbhajan has been having a few words with Hayden by the way

5.1

I Sharma to Hayden, 1 run, turned off the legs behind square

5.2

I Sharma to Clarke, no run, short ball on off, defended down on the front foot and in comes the call of "Wait on, wait on"

Two slips in for Clarke

5.3

I Sharma to Clarke, no run, short ball on off, rising up and played down off the back foot to gully, well negotiated

5.4

I Sharma to Clarke, no run, pushed back in to the right hander who defends back down

5.5

I Sharma to Clarke, OUT, fabulous delivery from Ishant, taking the inside edge as Clarke goes to forward defend but is beaten by the inswing, the ball coming back in off the seam from outside off and the pace, and Dhoni takes the catch

MJ Clarke c †Dhoni b I Sharma 4 (7m 8b 1x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

Australia's batting woes continue, India are alight

Symonds walks into the cauldron now, whistles in the crowd, the atmosphere is electric today

5.6

I Sharma to Symonds, no run, lets the ball go through outside off on a good length

Oh, you could watch replays of that Ishant wicket all day, quality ball

End of over 6 (1 run) Australia 24/3 (RR: 4.00)
A Symonds    0* (1b)      I Sharma    3-0-7-1
ML Hayden    10* (15b 1x4)      P Kumar    3-0-17-2

6.1

Kumar to Hayden, no run, stays over the wicket and fires across the left hander on a good length who opts, probably wisely, to leave

6.2

Kumar to Hayden, no run, good-length ball on off, Hayden defends into the covers

Ooh, hang on, perhaps that Clarke wicket actually brushed the pad - so hard to tell in real time

6.3

Kumar to Hayden, FOUR, short ball on off, Hayden advances way down the track and fires hard and well over mdiwicket with a powerful swipe

"Are you gonna go my way?" blares out of the microphones, which is, in the ball's case, into the boards

6.4

Kumar to Hayden, no run, a better ball, fuller on off, and the batsman fends down off the back foot into the gully

6.5

Kumar to Hayden, 1 run, a good-length ball on middle and leg, forced off the front foot straight out to mid-on

6.6

Kumar to Symonds, no run, great fielding from the reliable Uthappa with a dive to stop the ball as it was cut hard to backward point from a short one on off

End of over 7 (5 runs) Australia 29/3 (RR: 4.14)
A Symonds    0* (2b)      P Kumar    4-0-22-2

7.1

End of over 8 (2 runs) Australia 31/3 (RR: 3.87)
ML Hayden    17* (26b 2x4)      I Sharma    4-0-9-1

Kumar to Symonds, no run, defended on the back foot in line with middle and off, well bowled, the ball nipping in from outside off

8.3

Kumar to Symonds, no run, outside off, good length, defended back down off the back foot

Clarke must be fuming in the dressing room right now after being given out wrongly, hard to have seen that in real time, though

8.4

Kumar to Symonds, no run, good line and length and Symonds can only defend

8.5

Kumar to Symonds, FOUR, on the legs, just back of a length, turned the slower ball away quite fine and with good wrists

8.6

Kumar to Symonds, no run, short ball on off, defended off the back foot into the covers

End of over 9 (4 runs) Australia 35/3 (RR: 3.88)

9.4

I Sharma to Symonds, FOUR, a fraction short outside off, and wide, cut hard through point and the ball goes all the way, Symonds put everything he had behind that one and then only had to take two steps out of his crease

9.5

9.6

I Sharma to Symonds, 1 run, outside off, short, and Symonds doesn't get hold of that one, a back-foot cut to point where a misfield allows the single

Kumar to Symonds, no run, stands tall and waits for what happens to be a good-length ball, driven into the covers

10.6

Kumar to Symonds, no run, excellent stop at point, Symonds cuts hard and sets off, thinking it's easily beaten the fielder whose dive cuts it off

Rajesh, our resident stats guru, has come up with some interesting facts for us. "Symonds averages 50.25 in the tri-series finals in Australia, while Hayden averages 54.12. They are the only two batsmen from the current Australian line-up with a 50-plus average in these finals."

End of over 11 (maiden) Australia 45/3 (RR: 4.09)

Irfan Pathan into the attack. Starts over the wicket to his fellow left-hander

11.1

Pathan to Hayden, 2 runs, gets some good swing first up, the ball carrying on to the legs, and Hayden flicks it off the pads to midwicket

11.2

11.3

Pathan to Hayden, FOUR, a short ball wide a touch wide outside off, and the batsman launches into a hard straight drive, Irfan putting up his hand but doesn't quite get the fingertip

11.4

Pathan to Hayden, FOUR, poor ball, short and outside off, and it got the treatment, Hayden muscles into a hard, flowing cut off the back foot, leaning hard into that one

11.5

Pathan to Hayden, no run, swing into the left hander, driven out to the covers on the front foot

11.6

Pathan to Hayden, 1 run, outside off, cut hard behind point

13.2

Pathan to Hayden, no run, good-length delivery outside off, cut hard off the back foot to the cover ring

13.3

Pathan to Hayden, no run, very well bowled indeed, a much slower ball deceived Hayden completely and forced him to push away outside off, inside the line, and there was nearly a stumping chance for Dhoni

13.4

Pathan to Hayden, FOUR, a short ball again outside off, cut hard off the back foot and that flashes all the way, Hayden taking control out there

13.5
