Commonwealth Bank Series - 2nd final

Australia v India

India won by 9 runs

Hello and a very warm welcome to the second final of the CB Series. News from the middle is that India have won the toss and will bat.

Ishant Sharma was unable to recover from a finger injury suffered in Sunday's six-wicket win in Sydney and in his place comes Sreesanth. India have gone in with two spinners again. Ricky Ponting felt the surface would assist his seamers and hence swapped Brad Hogg for Stuart Clark.

Are you up for this game, then? The teams certainly are, a win for India will hand them the series, while Australia need to win to push the final final to Adelaide on Friday.

Dhoni says: "We're going to bat first. A good track. We will try to put a bit of pressure on Australia. Ishant has something related to the blood vessel. He's been the pick of the bowlers, he has been up to the mark, not only in the bowling department, but fielding in the deep. We are sticking with two spinners, Piyush did a good job [at Sydney where India won their first ODI ever against Australia at the SCG]."

This game is being shown in Brisbane too, note you, a turn-up as non-sell-out matches aren't normally shown in the place where the game's coming from. However, as this could be the last game in the series, ergo Adam Gilchrist and Hogg's last international match, then it's been agreed to let the game be shown there. That was the theory - but of course with Hogg being out of the XI he may have played his last match already.

Here's Ponting: "It looks like a good, even surface. I've always said this is the best one-day wicket in Australia and hopefully that works out like that today. The surface was quite wet when we started. It will probably get better to bat on tonight. We just felt with this wicket that it would suit the pace bowlers rather than the spinners."

In case you are wondering, there will be no charges against Harbhajan Singh after the match referee Jeff Crowe found no evidence to support newspaper reports of an alleged incident during the first final. Here is the news... that is there no news.

"It's hot," says Nagraj Gollapudi, slapping on the sun cream, "and it's going to get hotter in the ring soon.

"The pressbox are still debating the rights and wrongs of the Harbhajan affair in Sydney last week, so it's tense all around."

0.1

Lee to Uthappa, 1 wide, starts with a very wide outside off, not quite a Harmison, but still

May be encouraged by the swing there. Two slips in by the way

0.1

Lee to Uthappa, no run, better line, down the channel on a good length, the batsman shoulders arms

0.2

Lee to Uthappa, no run, outside off, pushes into the covers where Symonds fields well, dives and underarms to Clarke around the gully, who throws back in

0.3

Lee to Uthappa, no run, shoulders arms again as the ball whistles down the channel again, short and rising up, with some more swing

0.4

Lee to Uthappa, no run, boomed outside off at 143kph again, but a touch too wide to prompt the shot, this one a leave

0.5

Lee to Uthappa, 2 runs, some more width outside off and chopped away through Symonds and Clarke, the ball racing through point and Tendulkar declines a third, though they may have made it

0.6

Lee to Uthappa, no run, the first ball of the over that forces the batsman to play, the ball tight just outside off and defended back down

End of over 1 (3 runs) India 3/0 (RR: 3.00)
RV Uthappa    2* (6b)      B Lee    1-0-3-0
SR Tendulkar    0* (0b)

A steady start to the game, then. Australia are wearing black armbands to commemorate Norm O'Neill who died yesterday. Here's Nathan Bracken into the attack now

1.1

Bracken to Tendulkar, 1 run, stays over the wicket to the right hander, can't nail the line, the ball too straight and Tendulkar helps it off the legs behind square and they scurry through

1.2

Bracken to Uthappa, no run, straight this time, Uthappa comes across his stumps, looking to turn it off the hips but doesn't quite time

1.3

Bracken to Uthappa, 2 runs, outside the legs this time, a shortish ball that's worked off the pads square now

Bracken finding some swing into the right handers here

1.4

Bracken to Uthappa, 1 run, pushed behind square to short square leg where Hussey picks up and shies down the non-striker's stumps, the richochet allowing the batsmen to run through

1.5

Bracken to Tendulkar, 1 run, on middle and leg, pushed out well to midwicket and again they run through

1.6

Bracken to Uthappa, no run, swing back in to him from off to middle and the batsman defends on the front foot

End of over 2 (5 runs) India 8/0 (RR: 4.00)
RV Uthappa    5* (10b)      NW Bracken    1-0-5-0
SR Tendulkar    2* (2b)      B Lee    1-0-3-0

2.1

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, the ball carries through on a good length, Tendulkar just lets it go, and that's a good piece of judgement as it nips back in off the seam and just jumps over the sticks

2.2

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, well bowled by Lee, at 145kph, drawing him into the shot, a front-foot defensive press away from his body and the ball is that far from taking the outside edge

2.3

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, it's all action out there, Tendulkar this time presses forward, the ball goes down from a good length, hits the bat and dives into the crease and then goes behind towards the keeper

2.4

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, another good-length ball, again on off, in line with the stumps this time and he plays forward

Good contest potentially between this pair

2.5

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, yet again makes him defend, on the back foot this time, in line with off stump

2.6

Lee to Tendulkar, 3 runs, Lee now gives him a window of room outside off and Tendulkar drives out through the covers, a release of the pressure at last

End of over 3 (3 runs) India 11/0 (RR: 3.66)
SR Tendulkar    5* (8b)      B Lee    2-0-6-0
RV Uthappa    5* (10b)      NW Bracken    1-0-5-0

3.1

Bracken to Tendulkar, no run, fired across the right hander on a tight line, just outside off, the batsman waits on the back foot and turns the face of the blade out towards point

3.2

Bracken to Tendulkar, 2 runs, some curve back into the batsman but brings the ball too straight and there's a clip off the legs in line with leg stump out to midwicket

3.3

Bracken to Tendulkar, no run, that's better insofar as it's not on the legs, but aimed wider and the batsman left it on the back foot, not interested

3.4

Bracken to Tendulkar, no run, on middle this time, a good length, squeezed into short midwicket off the back foot and in comes an urgent "Waiting, waiting, waiting."

3.5

Bracken to Tendulkar, no run, just outside off this time, but the batsman can leave very comfortably indeed

3.6

Bracken to Tendulkar, no run, down the channel, on a good length, but the batsman isn't tempted by one which pitches just outside the line of off, waiting on his back foot as he considers what to do

End of over 4 (2 runs) India 13/0 (RR: 3.25)
SR Tendulkar    7* (14b)      NW Bracken    2-0-7-0
RV Uthappa    5* (10b)      B Lee    2-0-6-0

Lee to continue from the Members End, around 30,000 in there today

4.1

Lee to Uthappa, no run, a hint of width outside off, drawing the batsman into a slash towards the off-side, missing the ball

4.2

Lee to Uthappa, 1 run, down leg and the batsman's on to it quickly, the crowd fast in response too, but his firm pull from a short one goes straight to the man at deep backward square leg

4.3

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, phew, too good there, perfect length, full and drew him forward for a press just outside off and failed to get the outside edge

Tendulkar shakes his head wisftully

4.4

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, a short one this time, outside off, Tendulkar's first and final instinct is to sway back and leave. Watch out because he rehearsed the pull immediately afterwards

4.5

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, a full one, wide, and carrying wider down off

4.6

Lee to Tendulkar, no run, outside off, short ball, curving out a touch, Tendulkar pushes off the back foot into the covers with a hint of attack

Good bowling from Lee forcing the Indian batsmen to have a look and play circumspectly in these initial stages, although the pitch is looking good for batting

End of over 5 (1 run) India 14/0 (RR: 2.80)
SR Tendulkar    7* (18b)      B Lee    3-0-7-0
RV Uthappa    6* (12b)      NW Bracken    2-0-7-0

5.1

Bracken to Uthappa, no run, forced across him on a line and length which forces him to walk over a touch and defend on the back foot

5.2

Bracken to Uthappa, no run, a tad straighter this time, again a good length, and the batsman defends once again

Ponting in at a very short midwicket

5.3

Bracken to Uthappa, no run, taken from middle and off, the batsman getting into the line and forcing it off the front foot to Hussey just behind square who pinches it and throws back in

5.4

Bracken to Uthappa, no run, outside off this time, the batsman drives off the back foot into the covers

SR Tendulkar    7* (18b)      B Lee    3-0-7-0

6.1

Lee to Uthappa, 2 runs, short ball on middle and leg, pulls hard behind square and Bracken, fresh from bowling, comes round and dives out hard to cut it off well. Top marks for the fielding, including a rocket of a throw back to Gilchrist

6.2

Lee to Uthappa, FOUR, Bracken's off in pursuit again as the batsman helps the short one on leg squarer this time, five metres or so too far away from the fielder

A mini-conference now as some fresh boots are brought out for Lee who appeared to have been troubled by his spikes the last ball, having torn the upper off the sole. Hogg's the carrier

6.3

Lee to Uthappa, 2 runs, very full delivery, a would-be yorker on off, Uthappa stabs down on it, angling the face out towards third man, Hopes does the fielding down there

6.4

7.1

Bracken to Tendulkar, no run, on the legs, turned out in front of square where Hussey is vigilant and quick with the return throw

Ponting gees up his troops

7.2

Bracken to Tendulkar, no run, dropped. A hard chance by Ponting, good placement by himself though, and he got both hands there as the bowler puts in a wide one and it's lashed hard to him at the short cover region

7.3

Bracken to Tendulkar, no run, defended on the front foot this time

7.4

Bracken to Tendulkar, no run, on middle and off, defended back down into the ground, not much fuss about that delivery

Bracken to Tendulkar, no run, outside off, defended down off the back foot to the covers

Lee to Tendulkar, 1 run, outside off, the batsman waits for the wideish one and cuts late down once more, a bit squarer this time

8.6

Lee to Uthappa, 1 run, a short one, just outside off, the batsman waits on the back foot and exploits the gap between the slips and point, running the ball down to third man

Australia are 259 runs away from taking this match into the third final in Adelaide and that's a lower total than they could have expected given how well set India were earlier in their innings. Having said that, the pitch has had its tricksy moments insofar as the ball hasn't really come on all that well and Australia, who left out their spinner Brad Hogg in preference for an extra pace bowler, found themselves relying on their part-timers who did a handy job for them. India will be relieved right now at having kept with their two spinners. Everything is set for an entertaining and tight chase at the Gabba, in what could be Gilchrist's final match. Stay with us to find out who will win.
