Woolf Barnato was a remarkable allround sportsman who played six matches for Surrey as a wicketkeeper but who found fame as a racing driver. He had inherited a fortune at the age of two and that enabled him to pursue his sporting interests without the need to spend time working. The highlights of his motor-racing career were wins in the Le Mans 24-hour race in a Bentley in 1928, 1929 and 1930. He boxed as a heavyweight at university and also won medals for powerboat racing on the Thames.
