David Balcombe is a graduate of Durham UCCE, for whom he took 5 for 112 against Durham in 2005. He made his debut for Hampshire's first-team in 2007 but it was a temporary move to Kent, in 2011, that gave his career fresh impetus. In five Championship matches as a loan player, the fast-medium bowler plundered 33 wickets at 17.81 runs apiece. Back at Hampshire, he started the 2012 season with a sparkling 8 for 71 against Gloucestershire.
