Peter Cazalet, who has died at the age of 66, was one of the most graceful cricketers of his generation. His 104 not out for Eton against Harrow in 1926 was a model schoolboy innings and the following year he got a Blue at Oxford. His 62 against Leicestershire, when all other University batsmen had failed, and a 66 against Surrey during an opening partnership of 207* were both fine innings. But undoubtedly the innings he most enjoyed was in the following year when, playing for Kent against his own university, he put on 204 with Frank Woolley in 100 minutes. It was an extraordinary match in which Hardinge got 152, Cazalet 150 and Woolley 100. Of the three Cazalet was the star that day.

Peter was an amateur in the truest sense of the word. He loved cricket but thought of it only as a game to be played as time allowed. His interest in farming and horses developed while he was at Oxford and soon eclipsed all else. But cricketers and games players of all kinds were always welcome at Fairlawne, which was to become one of the happiest sporting homes in the country. With his death an era passes.
