South Africa is set to be the host of this year's Champions League T20 in October (between October 9 to 28)*, with Cape Town, Johannesburg, Centurion and Durban as the venues. The decision is yet to be formally announced but Sundar Raman, a member of the CLT20's technical committee, confirmed it through a tweet.

This will be the second time - the first was in 2010 - in four years that the CLT20, the world's most lucrative club-cricket tournament, will be held in South Africa. India had hosted the tournament in the other two years, and were originally frontrunners to hold the competition in 2012 as well.

South Africa's summer will just be beginning in October, which means temperatures will rise into the 20s for Johannesburg and Centurion. Durban will be its usual warm self while Cape Town can be expected to be cooler, as it was for last year's Australia Test. The pitches will be fairly lively up on the Highveld (Johannesburg and Centurion), while Durban should also help quick bowlers.

The governing council of the CLT20 had met last month in an attempt to finalise the format and venue of this season's tournament, but hadn't been able to reach a decision. One confirmed change from last season is the inclusion of Sialkot Stallions, Pakistan's domestic champions.

The other teams which have made it to, at least the qualifying stage of the tournament, are: Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians (all four from the IPL), Auckland Aces (from New Zealand), Trinidad & Tobago (from West Indies), Sydney Sixers, Perth Scorchers (both from Australia's Big Bash League), Titans, Lions (both from South Africa). The representatives from Sri Lanka and England will be decided after next month's Sri Lanka Premier League and the ongoing Friends Life t20.

The IPL teams will be treading familiar ground in South Africa but the franchises will miss out on the opportunity to keep the momentum generated by the big crowds that turned out during the 2012 IPL. Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils in particular benefitted from the surge in attendance and the CLT20 would have been the ideal opportunity to keep their fans engaged and coming to the stadiums, especially with Knight Riders winning it all this season.

Playing in South Africa also increases the operating costs for the IPL Teams, while reducing the exposure their sponsors get from being associated with the teams. The only potential benefit is that it gives the teams a chance to reach out to their overseas fans, something the Daredevils hope to capitalise on.

"The Indian teams that have qualified for the tournament are all familiar with the conditions there since IPL 2009 was held there," TA Sekar, Head (Cricket), GMR Sports - the owners of Daredevils - said. "The Champions League T20 being played in South Africa will [also] let the IPL teams enhance their fan base."

South African franchises, though, will not make substantial gains from hosting the tournament. The two participating franchises, Lions and Titans, will receive their participation fees and any prize money while the four unions based at the stadiums will be paid hosting fees. Any profit made by CSA, as shareholders of the event, will be credited to them and distributions to affiliates will take place out of a pool, in accordance with normal procedure.

thank god mumbai made it to the top 4 in this years ipl. if not they would have played 5 ipl teams with all 5 ipl teams directly qualifying to the tournament. i am sure this will happen in the future. ridiculous.

To be honest this Cricket Champions League is nothing really because most people don't even watch it and reading some articles on it financially, it loses money every year and sponsorships. Those who say this Champions League is unfair are right but have to understand that for some pathetic reason is owned by BCCI majority when really should such competitions should exist should actually be run by the governing body of Cricket ICC. This is how the Champions league of Cricket should be so that all is fair - 3 teams from Indian T20 league, 2 from England T20 league and 1 each from Australian, Bangladeshi, South African, Caribbean, Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Sri Lanka etc plus the previous holders from Champions league from whatever country that way it will be an interesting and exciting tournament or something similar according to me.

@Fanatic_cricko : That's the thing. BPL has many overseas stars but not a single local player of international standards. The four you mentioned are all Pakistanis so including a BPL team would basically mean including a mini-Pakistan team.

@Harsha Veerendranath : so what if india is the highest stake holder ... and it they ahve to show it then why even bother bringing other teams .. just bring a couple of more indian teams and call it mini-ipl ... the whole concept of this tournament to see the best doemsstic team in entire international circuit and for that ther eshould be a balance ... having two teams from all interantional cricketing countries makes that balance ... and it also proves that the two teams that worked hard to reach the finals at their domestic level deserve to be in a tournament where a champion is crowned rather than ignoring hard work of many teams and just bringing in teams from their own tournament just for the sake of having higher stakes ... it is like saying ifi bring the bat to the game then i am the captain and ill bat first no matter who ever deserves it better and can do better than me ... ifyou want to arrange an internation tournament then make sure all countries are treated same

My question is simple ... why term Champions League as an international tournament for domestic teams when majority of teams are from india only ... does this mean other countries are not good enough to give two teams atleast ... offcourse every domestic tournament has two teams in the final so why not reduce teams from india and make a balance of team qualifying for it to atleast 2 teams per country ... why ignore teams from countries which qualified to reach the final and yet brintwo teams that didnt even reach the final in one tournament ... is this a messages that indian teams that dont do too well in their domestic tournaments are still good enough to replace teams from countries which reached to the finals of their own tournaments

Dhaka Gladiators deserves a place in the CLT20. They have some of the world class players in the team including the likes of Afridi, Azhar Mahmood, Saeed Ajmal, Madmax Imran Nazir and can blaze away many opponents

Posted by   on (June 27, 2012, 8:01 GMT)

For all those complaining about 4 IPL teams, note that India is the single largest stake holder in CL T20 (50%).... Basically we own it... So it is our choice how many of our teams go there.....

Posted by   on (June 27, 2012, 7:27 GMT)

Why isn't there any team from Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. I thought it would only be fair to have at least one team from each test playing nation. This is what champions league refers to, isn't it?

Posted by DINESHCC on (June 27, 2012, 7:13 GMT)

For this year's CL T20, KKR is the favourite team, not because of Gambhir, Yusuf, Mccullum, Lee, Manoj, Narine are playing but the legend, sir, multi talented, prodigy, super star, marvellous, gifted, athletic cricketer, No.1 bowler, No.1 batsman, No.1 fielder in any position, No.1 fielder in out of the ground, No.1 wicket keeper, No.1 12th man, No.1 umpire, No.1 commentator, No.1 spectator Shakhib is playing.

Including of Sialkot Stallions & Dhaka Gladiators will add some flavor in this CLT20 !!

Posted by Shahrukhkazmi on (June 27, 2012, 6:20 GMT)

Have you seen Gladiators Line-up i guess it is the perfect line-up for T-20 and of course one of the most furious line-up which can beat any team in the world easily that is why they are not in CL.

Posted by Blythesville on (June 27, 2012, 6:19 GMT)

The sad thing is that the team that everyone loves (or is their 2nd favourite team) - Trinidad & Tobago - is the most depleted by the preference for the IPL teams. How can tournament compensate such teams for such a bias? this needs to be fixed.

Posted by Sakthiivel on (June 27, 2012, 4:54 GMT)

@ Rezaul : Kid, all IPL teams have 4 foreign players, How do you say that they play only in flat pitches. CSK won 2010 CLT20 in SA.

A Morkel and Faf du Plessis are in good form. Yellow boyz will have a good chance of bring back CL trophy home for the second time.

Expectations will be higher as well.Cricket in SA is much more amazing than in indian damp slow pitches which host poor indian cricket . It shows that india only wants to be number 1 at home & have thinking that all cricket should held in india. They r exposed by england & aussie tours.

Posted by avmd on (June 26, 2012, 19:31 GMT)

There should be one, and only one team from India.

Posted by Rezaul on (June 26, 2012, 19:10 GMT)

I would like to see Dhaka Gladiator in the competition. I bet, if they play, they will cause plenty of probleblems for IPL teams as this is not going to be flat Indian track!

@Saahil Butt: Obviously you haven't read the earlier posts, so I am just copying and pasting my earlier comments again: "The reason is simple. CLT20 is a private league involving club teams. They want a diverse set of fans (from all cricket playing nations) watching the tournament but they also want the number of fans following the tournament to be as high as possible. The number of cricket fans in India is atleast 6 times more than Pakistan, atlesat 50 times more than SL and about 300 times more than NZ. It's simple business and simple math. You can't argue with sheer numbers." @Pakipassion: Your definition of champions league is wrong. "Countries" have nothing to do with this. This tournament cannot be run by the ICC because this is a private tournament.

Posted by IndiaRulesEverybody on (June 26, 2012, 18:09 GMT)

Everyone who is asking why Dhaka Gladiators are not there - They don't deserve to be there. As simple as that.

Posted by   on (June 26, 2012, 17:30 GMT)

Why no team from Bangladesh?

Posted by dulabhai on (June 26, 2012, 17:08 GMT)

This is a shame! It contradicts when I hear that ICC wants to globalize cricket but they only focus on top 6/7 teams. You have 4 teams from India. Where is Dhaka Gladiators from BPL? Is this how you globalize cricket? The way things are going.. it's not far when cricket will be played just in India.

Posted by hpc1 on (June 26, 2012, 16:52 GMT)

I think there should be 14 teams in the tournament. 2 from India, Australia & South Africa each 1 from SL, Pak, Ban, NZ, Zim, Ban each. 1 more from last year's winning country (MI was champion last year, 3rd team from IPL will be also qualified.) 6 from 14 teams will play in qualifier, 2 will be qualified and make 10 team main event. Also, according to me, this year tournament should be played in Down Under. As seen in BBL, two night matches will be played on same day in Perth & Sydney due to big time zone difference. and Qualifier round can be played in New Zealand.

I am Indian and big fan of Indian Cricket, but I think every one should get fair chance

Four teams frm IPL.... What is this.... As the name says it is supposed to be the champions tournament.. Not the losers.... It,s way beyond imagination four teams from one nation on what basis... Is cricket run by ICC or BCCI it,s clearly unfair. And Team from BPL should be included. Ithink it will be fair if there is only one team from each country.

Posted by   on (June 26, 2012, 16:19 GMT)

@Prof.Cricket-have u seen the dhaka gladiators squad?just compare dhaka gladiators squad with any previous srilankan team who've participated in clt20.

Posted by cefur on (June 26, 2012, 15:43 GMT)

4 teams from India dont make any sense, this is clearly unfair to the competition. What i would like to know on what grounds ICC has approved this biased decision? Is this tournament is ran by BCCI or ICC?

This is one reason cricket is losing interest and favoritism is clearly shown. Shame on ICC and BCCI.

where is dhaka gladiators. they are bpl champs.

Posted by   on (June 26, 2012, 15:02 GMT)

There should be only one two team from india and sould include BPL champs and any other team i prefer one more WI or Eng - A cricket lover from India

Posted by   on (June 26, 2012, 14:40 GMT)

why there will not any bpl team?????they have strong team, and should be able to play,if organizers are unable to add them, then the cup will be a tournament between india's and rsa.no confusion that india board is killing the cricket game

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (June 26, 2012, 14:29 GMT)

Also WEST INDIES provide some of the most exciting t20 players / sides 2 teams should be included from all countries finalists ! who wouldn't want to see JAMAICA here for example along with T&T . . .

@Faisal Jashim Uddin:Buddy Just keep in remember when Sri Lankan players are concerned in top ranks all around the world and each of them is a necessity in any international tournament of the game.I dnt mind giving chances to 1 from BPL and Zimbabwe T20s.Bt it's fact that by now they are well above BPL franchises. So don't make a Sri lankan team a bottom ranked. It's a must not.We do have brilliant players in all round departments. We will show u that in the SLPL. Hope u too will get a chance to see how brilliant they are and hope a BPL franchise too will get a representation with a Zimbabwean franchise.

Venues other than India should be tried for one more year...

Posted by Head_gear on (June 26, 2012, 14:17 GMT)

@Cric_fan_sam:I totally agree with Cric_fan_sam.If the tournament organizers do include 4 IPL teams and 3 teams straightly to the second stage it's a problem whether the organizers take care of all Test playing nations with same care and it will be a bad impact to the world about cricket also and it too will reduce competancy in IPL.But I'd like if they include 2 each from the main countries like Aussies,India,NZ,Eng,Pak,SL,WI,SA and Bangladesh And Zimbabwe with 1 from each. The qualifying stage comprising of the Runners up of every domestic tournament and 2-4 winners advancing the 2nd stage.

Posted by LALITHKURUWITA on (June 26, 2012, 14:12 GMT)

Play it in Galle and Hambantota. Two beautiful cities.

Posted by   on (June 26, 2012, 14:02 GMT)

y there are four IPL teams in this tournament, and y there is going to be a qualifying round for the other national champions and not for few other teams,is there any ranking system for the teams, everybody knows that there is nothing like that,so every national T20 champion side should play the main round

Posted by bala2rahul on (June 26, 2012, 13:57 GMT)

@cric_fan_sam :- Spot on bro, totally agree with you, Mumbai indians inclusion is ridiculous. Also reduction of teams in the main group stage from 10 to 8 is puzzling. If 8 is the way to go then Include 2 teams from india, australia, and south africa. The remaining 2 spots is up for grabs. 6 teams for qualifiers ie, champions of Sl,pak, ban,wi,nz and eng.

Posted by YS_USA on (June 26, 2012, 13:44 GMT)

Felllows, They don't hold CL matches in Australia because then matches would be in a different time zone and nobody from India will watch them. Also, 4 IPL teams because the biggest cricket market (Indians) will watch. Each home team gets US$500,000 for each of their players who plays for IPL team.

Posted by PakiPassion on (June 26, 2012, 13:38 GMT)

Champions league means "CHAMPIONS" from each domestic league should represent their country. 4 IPL teams!!! Does India have four champions???? .... ICC SHOULD RUN THIS & MAKE IT ONE TEAM FROM EACH COUNTRY.. keep it short & Sweet & FAIR

Posted by chad_reid on (June 26, 2012, 12:45 GMT)

@indiasupbangalore Australians don't care about IPL or CL hardly anyone watches it its not even shown on any tv channel if CL is played here they'll only be a 1000 people in the stadium

Posted by cric_fan_sam on (June 26, 2012, 12:45 GMT)

Though I am from India, I don't like 4 ipl teams participating in CLT20. If you are saying ipl teams are better than teams from other countries, then what is the point of this tournament? BPL winners (Dhaka warriors if I am not wrong) should've been playing instead of Mumbai Indians (on the basis of them finishing 4th in the ipl) and DD should be in the qualifiers (coz they didn't make the final)

Posted by phendel on (June 26, 2012, 12:07 GMT)

the BPL definitely shud be included.....im really glad they included Sialkot Warriors though....& does anybody knw the regulations for who gets directly into the main tournament & who has to play the qualifiers (it seems only the 3 governing countries gets 2 teams into the main draw while other countries have to risk early elimination)

You can't argue with sheer numbers.

There should be atleast 2 teams from West Indies. Trinidad is so much better than any other team in the world , its ridiculous

We will see a T-20 series in first bowling pitch condition.I am doubtful about scores of the matches.

As IPL teams have the right to recruit players from other teams, shouldn't other teams be allowed to recruit players from other regional teams to fortify their loss of key players? This tournament automatically favours IPL teams on that basis. This needs to be rethought to compensate teams like Trinidad & Tobago, Auckland and Sydney for the IPL depleting their superstars.

I think Gauti and Viru will be seething.... on SA pitches, they cant go after the bowling like they do on the flat wickets and India, and they will have to work fr their runs. CSK to win the tourney!!!!

Poor Trinidad & Tobago... gutted of their superstars. But wait and see. There will be a batch of newcomers that will surprise the world yet again.

It would be very interesting to see how the IPL teams went in the CL if their overseas players played for their own "home" teams instead. It's a bit of a farce but I guess money talks and T20 cricket is about nothing if not money. It might be considered unfair when some IPL teams would lose overseas players and others wouldn't because their home teams weren't playing it's even less fair for the home teams lose players. Obviously no rule will ever be introduced to ensure a player plays for their home team in case of a conflict because the IPL teams have the most leverage. I wonder whether the players themselves could negotiate that if they wanted to. I wonder whether they'd want to, if it meant possibly less money.

Another version of IPL, Really like to watch Global T20 series from each test playing country participation with domestic t20 team. but, CLT20 isn't like that, it's boring.. coz, it's a kind of mini IPL.

Posted by ada007 on (June 26, 2012, 6:58 GMT)

why are there 4 teams from IPL, ridiculous!!!! should be the top 2 teams from each league.

Posted by   on (June 26, 2012, 6:28 GMT)

its like India and South Africa hosting Champions League T20 alternatively it will be the second time South Africa will be hosting the Champions League T20 while India have hosted it twice before

Posted by mihir_nam on (June 26, 2012, 6:20 GMT)

Why not Australia, They are also members. Just because of Timings

Posted by   on (June 26, 2012, 6:12 GMT)

Cricket Australia also holds a share in the CLT20 yet Australia is the only country out of those shareholders not to host the tournament. Fair go please!!

Good. We can have it in places like UAE and Sri Lanka in the future.
