It was a match of no consequence for either team, but Sialkot Stallions will leave South African shores with greater confidence, having put in an all-round performance against the English domestic champions. Two individual performances from youngsters on either side stood out - Haris Sohail's unbeaten 63 the highlight, as it was a match-winning knock. Glenn Maxwell scored a counter-attacking 42 when his team, Hampshire, needed runs, but a score of 143 wasn't imposing enough for Sialkot.

A combined bowling effort by Sialkot kept Hampshire to that score, well short of what Trinidad and Tobago had managed earlier in the day, with only 31 runs scored in the last five overs. Hampshire lost early wickets in search of quick runs, scratched around for the first ten overs, surged in the middle overs thanks to an entertaining cameo from Maxwell but lost their way after his dismissal. It was a pitch that offered something for the spinners and seamers. Sarfraz Ahmed, the tall left-arm seamer with an unusual action, got a few to bounce off a good length to pose questions for the openers. Shoaib Malik got turn and bounce and those that skidded through weren't easy to put away either.

Hampshire would have ideally liked one from the top order to bat through for the majority of the overs, but regular strikes stalled their progress. The run-outs didn't help - they lost two of their top order off direct hits. Hampshire had only managed 59 off the first ten overs and it was up to their overseas picks to give the innings a push.

Maxwell was harsh on the pull, connecting a few off the seamers and sending the ball several rows over the on side. He picked Naved-ul-Hasan for consecutive sixes in an over which yielded 16, and added 56 with Shahid Afridi. However, Sialkot pulled things back with a quiet over by the seamer Bilawal Bhatti, whose skiddy pace kept Maxwell in check. Hampshire were 113 for 4 after 16 overs and in the search for quick runs, both Maxwell and Afridi fell off successive balls off Umaid Asif. The lower order though failed to push the score past 150.

The Sialkot top order didn't look at ease against the Hampshire seamers, limping to 26 for 2 after the Powerplay. A couple of pressure-relieving boundaries by Sohail off the left-armer Chris Wood put Sialkot on the path to stability. It helped to have the experienced Malik at the other end as they calmly pushed the singles in between. Sialkot were 62 for 3 after ten overs, just three ahead of Hampshire's at the same stage.

Malik showed some aggressive intent, charging the left-arm spinner Liam Dawson and launching him for a six and four off consecutive deliveries. Crucially, Sialkot didn't let themselves get bogged down with a boundary drought - the pair ensured they picked up at least one boundary per over on an average. From the 11th to the start of the 18th over, when they were separated, they picked up ten boundaries. It also hurt Hampshire that their most experienced bowler, Afridi, couldn't effect the breakthroughs or stem the flow of runs. Sohail pounced on anything short and wide from Afridi, and by the time the spinner picked up a wicket - that of Malik - Sialkot were well on course needing 20 off 17. Malik's 96-run association with Sohail had all but sealed the game. It was a pity though that the tournament format didn't allow Sialkot to build on the momentum.

Innings Dot balls 4s 6s Powerplay 16-20 overs NB/Wides
Hampshire 61 15 4 42-2 31-4 0/12
Sialkot Stallions 54 17 2 26-2 43-1 0/13

@Solid_Snake - Bhajji did become a world-class batsman by scoring two Test hundreds later that year.

Posted by Daany on (October 13, 2012, 13:48 GMT)

it should be called Mini Ipl . . .

@Solid_Snake - How do our comments correlate? Care to clarify?

haris sohail should be another upcoming talent like azhar ali

Posted by Solid_Snake on (October 12, 2012, 18:53 GMT)

@ SamAsh07 ->And do you remember how many times the Wicket of Tendulkar went flying past the boundary line while facing Akhtar? Bhajji smashing Akhtar,i still remember that match.Ok so Did Bhaji become a world Class Batsman after that lol?Hitting a six is not a difficult task..How you trap a batsman and take his wicket..Thats an achievement. But just saying that a Bowler is pathetic because of being hit by a Six by Bhajji?Well thats an awsome judgment.According to that logic,Wasim Akram,Waqar Younis,Kapil dev,Anil Kumble,Shane Warne and all great bowlers becomes pathetic. If i agree on this point then even Muralitharan becomes a world class batsman because once he smashed Waqar Younis so badly.

PS->Sachin is great..But Akhtar is great too.Just because Akhtar opens his mouth infront of Media saying bad things about other people,it dosent mean that he was a bad bowler while on ground. He was the fastest,he took wickets,he proved himself. His character has a question mark but still he rocks

Our tournament finished with SS disqualification. Now domestic league PPL is coming. so forget that clt20 and enjoy PPL . who cares for that low level clt20 when our team is not their. its like watching american baseball .

See people weather you like IPL or not, is the system unfair or not ?? harsh reality is 75 to 80 % of the world revenue comes from India so it is quite obvious that CL will be dominated by Indian teams, Indian sponsers, Indian viewership, some smart alec posted in another report other countries should boycott India ,oh really, Rest of the cricketing world needs India more than vice versa, We indians would be just happy playing our IPL and invent some 50 over IPL and get all the international players thus decimating other national teams, Cricket as it is is hardly played by 7-8 countries and pales in popularity compared with other sports especially Football. So please as a global cricket community quit all this hating weather it is IPL ,other t-20 leagues or whatever pet peeves you have for common cause of cricket.

I'm glad Sohail played well because he has been a consistent performer in for his county.

Also, players Yasin, Shezhad and Sohail should replace Misbah, Azhar and Malik in ODI's.

Posted by NP_NY on (October 12, 2012, 14:12 GMT)

LOL, it is amazing how many people here don't understand what CLT20 is all about. Comments like "It shouldn't be called Champions League", "It's not fair that India has 4 teams in the tournament", etc., is ridiculous. It is a private tournament owned by three boards and they can do and call it whatever they want. So many people comment that they don't care about CLT20 but they keep commenting on these posts. That is called caring, whether you like CLT20 or not. Honestly, I'd like it to be two teams from India, Aus and SA (the tournament owners) and one team each from SL, Pak, WI and England and NZ. But what I or anyone else like doesn't matter. This is business and the owners will do what is in their best interest. So get over it!

Posted by   on (October 12, 2012, 13:46 GMT)

why this tournament is called champions league , it should be called Mini Ipl . . .

Posted by PakCricSpin on (October 12, 2012, 13:42 GMT)

@AshrafGul: I disagree. The tournament format is unforgiving if you lose a single game. It looked like a knock out format from the get go. That's a format to win a lottery. :P

And I also disagree with purchasing foreign players. It dilutes the identity of the team. Who would've thought Hampshire possessed Kohat's Afridi!? Looked pretty much out of place to me. Until Cricket becomes Soccer (LOL) this purchasing of foreign players to create a "Mix and Match" team feels flat.

Posted by M_H_K on (October 12, 2012, 13:42 GMT)

Good performance by SS. Although they have knocked out my home team Lahore a number of times but I still have respect for them because they have managed to win so many times without any star players in their team, especially if you compare with other domestic teams especially Lahore and Karachi. I think, the format of CLT20 should be such that every team gets a fair chance. One loose and you are out of the tournament, it doesn't happen even in the ICC tournaments , leave alone domestic tournaments. Its was also sad to see the T&T going home, though they looked a good team. I think because India funds 50% and SA, AUS fund the remaining 50%, that's why their team go directly to the main round. Can anybody give me any example of any sporting event where money acts like a waiver.

Posted by ProdigyA on (October 12, 2012, 13:34 GMT)

SS should thank the BCCI for sponsoring a paid "foreign" trip, which would only be a dream for most of these chaps. Thanks you can go home now.

Posted by SamAsh07 on (October 12, 2012, 12:25 GMT)

Never mind the CLT20 format, for me CLT20 finished yesterday with Auckland Aces winning the final against Yorkshire :P it's a really useless tournament along with BPL and SLPL.....god in few years time we'll have APL, EPL, SAPL, PPL, WIPL, NZPL etc....

WICKY ROY PAK LOVER -FIRST OF all my congrat on S S winning the match i was really looking forward to see this team compated in this CL how ever better luck for next time we may see some changres CHAMP TEAMS FROM ALL MAJOR NATION get direct entry ,now come to the point i aways emphacised that there no use in comparing ours with u r s & declaring urs best ,the pak batsmen u refered are no doubt are future of PAK cricket & i pray that we must see few of them in the elite group of cricketers from our aria like GAWASKAR,MAJIDKHAN, MIANDAAD ,ANWAR, INZY SACHIN ARVINDADE SILVAA, ARJUNA,but ur illogical coments always compells u s to respond for which i really feel bad ,in cricket no chance for ifs & buts ,lets see how they perfom on elevation to national team,no body dare to demean them if they perfom ,lets see what is in store who stands where once the cricketing ties are resumed we can enjoy ,till than just relax & enjoy, class & strenght of each team is decided on field not on keyboard

Lets not bash Sechin Tendulkar. He is a World Class batsman. He should retire now though with respect. Even Wasim Akram said during interviews that in World Cup(2003, I guess), Shoaib Akhtar was scared to bowl to Sachin. Akram said, he being the Captain, told Akhtar that he (Akhtar) was Youngest bowler, he (Akram) and Waqar were getting old, so it is him (Akhtar) who should take the responsibility and lead from the front, but Akhtar simple refused as Sechin had already drubbed him in first few overs. this was the fear of Master ! I respect him.

So this was the Best Domestic Team of Pakistan ? lol Could not even qualify for the main tournament .. ? It seems, even NRR didn't help them either ! There were so many talks before the start of the qualifying rounds that even without Overseas players, this SS team would not only qualify but also win the title. What happened now ? All talks disappeared in air ? the fact is this County Cricket where Entertainment is Priority ! Popular Players from diffrnt nations should be purchased to make a decent team. SS was literally boring to watch. No World Class player ! Shoaib Malik is just a Joke. Look @ other teams - even Hampsire had Afridi, Maxwell and Ervine ! - Their overseas players.

Posted by   on (October 12, 2012, 9:35 GMT)

All qualifying teams deserved more.I mean, they all played so brilliantly to win their respective domestic tournaments. What`ve the IPL teams or Aussie/SA teams done more to go straight into the main rounds?Forget the sponsorship, its the most lousy reason ever heard.Whats the point of the tournament if teams are going through on the base of their country spending money? No wonder this tournament has`nt been successful. So Sialkot and T&t lose one game and they`re out?Change the format and stop making sponsorship an excuse! Its a sport, a battle, not a business company!

what childish comments u guys are making here. is it India vs Pakistan fight going on or something. a match was played between a Pakistani and an English club. where does India come in between ? just relax and give space to one another to breath, please. its time we guys get mature and think beyond such childish thoughts. I am a proud Pakistani, no doubt, but there is no denying the fact that India has a better T20 team than us. they didnt qualify for Semi Finals in T20 championship, well, that can happen to any good team. South Africa didnt even win a single match, u think they are a bad team ? to be honest, Cricket is more glamour and fun more than being a sport. just sit, relax, and enjoy.

@ NP_NY.... you forgot or can see on youtube that .... Sachin Tendulkar who literally surrendered his wicket to Akhtar at Faisabad in January, 2006 - the first time Tendulkar walked in his 17 year career. It was the first time also that I was seeing a batsman being so highly rated in international cricket walking away from his wicket, having declared himself 'OUT' without the bowler getting his wicket when sachin was walking off, indian commentators were saying that Indian players are more worry about their safety thn saving game.not only sachin but everyone was so eager leave the field, i dont know why... can you tell me y???

@NP,i think u forgot the eden gardens where akhter got sachin on golden duck and crowed of eden garden was stunned. you forgot the so called dada going on strature facing akhter's bouncer. No doubt sachind and dravid are legend bt do't forget that akhter is also a legend,it does't matter whether people like u accept it r not,it is obvious.

Posted by NP_NY on (October 12, 2012, 7:07 GMT)

@Shahid Naqvi: CLT20 is jointly owned by BCCI, Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa. Between these three countries there are 8 teams - top 4 from India (simply becasue India has the highest fan following by a distance), top 2 from Aus and SA each. There is only place for two more teams in the tournament, which will be chosen from the other test playing countries (Eng, WI, Pak, SL). Long story short, CLT20 is privately owned by the three boards and it is simply about entertainment and business. The owners don't need to justify anything. Your arguement is like telling a highly successful global corporation that they should be fair and set up offices in every country. It doesn't work that way!

@Bay-Lagaam: Afraid? That six that Tendulkar hit "off your speedy Rawalpindi express" is what started India's domination of Pakistan in cricket in recent times. Even Balaji has hit Akhtar for a six. LOL. On a different note, I do agree that the CLT format should be changed slightly so the top team from WI, Aus, Eng, SA, Pak and SL will automatically qualify.

Posted by spiritwithin on (October 12, 2012, 6:38 GMT)

@Bay-Lagaam..who said that india plays T20 entire year??IPL is only for one and half month and CLT20 only 5matches maximum and indian team has the least no. of T20 international unlike ur pak players who plays in ur pak domestic leagues,SLPL,Bangladesh premier league,Big Bash,County T20 League and add to that Pak plays the most number of T20 international..and having IPL is no gaurantee to success bcoz foreign players also gets the equal experience and there r many other leagues too like BB,SLPL,BPL etc etc ..as far as sachin & dravid getting afraid of Akhtar is concerned well well never saw any of them being afraid of akhtar or is it that u ppl took the word of slogger Afridi's word too seriously??

@ solankibhavesh ->Stallions reached SA and the next day they had a warm up match. Most of their players never played outside except a few players in Stallions. And giving them just 2 matches to qualify lol.In T20 even bigger teams produce different results in a different games. This is Sialkot a Club team and you guy expect them to win in.Also i dont see other English teams who has got the 2nd highest winning streak in T20.Where are those English teams. They are not even in the Qualifiers. All ican see here are Aus,SA and rest all IPL teams lol. I think that Stallions performance was good..being in such a difficult condition and playing there for the first time.I guess this performance was good. PS->Just do an experiment for fun..Leave all foreign players of IPL teams aside and then give them 2 games to qualify.Ill put the national heroes in the team because i know after their removal,Chances of these teams to qualify would merely become a dream :)

Posted by Ayush_Chauhan on (October 12, 2012, 6:29 GMT)

Enough with the format whining, its your cricket boards who didn't sign the contract when they were asked to. When Champions League was conceptualized, these countries wanted no part of it (England is playing a sore loser still), so now that they want to play in the tournament, they have to qualify, as simple as that. None of the teams or players have complained...

Posted by yoohoo on (October 12, 2012, 5:56 GMT)

For all those complaining about qualifying rounds. When the CLT20 was formed most countries were given an option to be part owners, making atleast one team to be directly eligible. It was your country board which refused to join in. So, your team needs to play qualifying round.

This is no different from football Champiions League, where even the winner might have to play qualifying stages the next year.

SS perhaps the only team with all the players from one country and almost all of them are of domestic except 2-3 unlike the other teams who have borrowed the quality crickters from other nations to Qualify/compete fo the league. So no complaigns for SS and best of luck for the next time, but i can clearly feel the heat in the dash of Indians...

Posted by   on (October 12, 2012, 5:45 GMT)

Harris Sohail has a batting average of over 100, and most of his runs have come in crunch matches were he has batted his way through, very few in Pakistan can play with that mind set and skill, he is already a fringe player in the Pak team, just that he has less domestic experience .... He surely will be in the Pak team after some improvements….

Posted by Shahbaz Alam on (October 12, 2012, 5:45 GMT)

Well played SS. If some sense may be used in first match, they can go to the main round but never mind you are worthy domestic champion. IPL and CLT20 is somewhat like "WWE" where management's favourit wristler won the title without observing the normes of the game and the refree overlook the blunders and unfair means done by the wristlier. Similarly, four champions of a country domestic cricket have two spots and one country have four spots. Amazing. I think money is not everything, fairplay and equal opprotunity must be given to every participants.

Wishing desperately SS to play with KKR... but the early exit made it a nightmare for me and for the people of Pakistan. One thing to be highlighted here that CCL is now going to be a must-watch in Pakistan.Good job by CCL to give chance to SS , they drew attention of masses from their home-land.That was one goal achieved.Better luck next year!!! SM, you are great.

It should be 16 teams in tournament divided into four groups without qualifing rounds, four Indians teams in 4 different groups and than 2 each from Aus, Saf, Pak, and 1 each from SL, Ban, WI, NZ. Eng, Zim. It will also helpo for marketing as 4 Indians teams will be playing and if consider marketing in Asia than there will be totAL Eight teams from Asia. If the quality of Team from ban or Zim is not good alllow one more team from WI, SL or Eng and if Eng doesnt play from next season than 2 each teams from Pak and SL.

Its Hard luck of Sialkot by wining the match but cant make for CL T20. This the team which is held record to win 25 consecutive T20 match at home but out of home team can not manage a qualifying round.

@classy nerd,we know what kinda player he is.....think about ya patehtic players haha

Well, first i need to say sorry to SS that they couldnt qualify for the next round, they need to play with some plans in the first game, and surely they would have create some troubles for Indian teams in main round.. Now i want to raise some questions over the format of the tournament. This event is being operationlized with the complete support of ICC and apparently the tournament seems to be a type of world cup in which teams of all test playing nations participate and compete each other. But reality is that the tournament is not for all the teams, it merely represents Indian teams. Why it is so? Answer is pretty simple, to attract the commercials and to earn more and more from advertisement. Every body knows the love for cricket of Indians and also the population of this country. A country having more than 1 billion population and craze for the game makes it best and suitable place for commercialization and sale of goods. Four teams of India would give better chance to sale d items

@IndiaRulesNoBody: Lets see how many times your team india got kicked out of major tournaments in preliminary rounds this year so far? The correct answer is ALL OF THEM. Came last in the tri-nation tournament in Australia (Only 3 teams in the tournament). Now that is PATHETIC!! Ciao.....

I cant wait to see people starting HARIS SOHAIL FOR PAKISTAN FAN CLUB!!!!!! hahahaha, One Performance and people start dreaming of a Legend Cricketer in the making..

@Rajesh_India_1990 Its less of a miracle than India qualifying for T20 semifinal. When was the last time they qualified ?? oh I can't remember!!!! is it to do with my memory or India's poor T20 performances???? SS arrived 4 days back to SA which is the hardest place to bat for sub-continent batsmen ( ask Sachin if you don't believe me :-) ) The youngsters lost the first match which was close enough and won the second. I am sure India has ALWAYS performed great right from the start against SA in SA . Have they ??? Really ???? I think thats enough shame for you in-case you have any conscience. coming back to Harris Sohail. He is a great talent. I have always mainatined that Nasir, Umar Akmal and Harris sohail are the most talented young Pakistani batsmen in 20 & ODI cricket and they are finally proving their worth which is good although I do feel that he was a bit weak facing good fast bowling in these conditions but again who isn't ?

Can't wait for all the Pak fans to come here and whine about how the format is unfair and how they had to play the qualifying round. If it was that unfair that why did you agree to play in the first place? You were given a clear chance to compete in the main tournament and your team was just not good enough. Accept it. So tired of excuses you guys put up after you have been kicked out of every tournament. Pathetic.

Actually stallions can win the 1st game also but as previous matches shoaib malik pushing himself back..did not bowled. its game of courage and captain have to show himself an example.

What a bogus tournament. Even if IPL teams win, the victory seems really hollow. Maybe two IPL teams could be in the main round, but the rest should go through the qualifiers.

Cricket reform!!!

I dont get it just 2 pools and only 2 teams its a shame that teams like TnT and wayamba did not go ahead just because they lose one match and one is washed away I think thir should be atleast 2 teams from a single qualifying group SS playd well this is our first appearance Hope we will do best nxt time

Format for qualifying is quite crazy. Dont seems a fair oppertunity for all. anyways.. This is the guy pakistan need in middle order of ODI,s and t20,s. I have watched a bit of him in domestic games and he has a kind of ability like nasir jamshed to play a big innings. I wish him very good luck for future. Well played.

It's anything but a "Champions" League...mediocre teams already in the main rounds while first timers didn't get much of a chance..if only Pak, SL, NZ, WI and Eng had the guts to run their own tournament!

Posted by Rajesh_india_1990 on (October 11, 2012, 19:29 GMT)

Many miracles happened today..1.ss win 2.Afridi scored more than 0 3.shoaib malik scored some runs..

Posted by   on (October 11, 2012, 19:24 GMT)

I think the format should be 2 teams from every test playing nation should compete for the title.

Wonderful performance by Sialkot. Haris Sohail looks a good prospect for Pakistan. Hopefully you guys can be a part of the main tournament next year. Good luck.

this is stupid. why Teams have to play qualifiers. In this case res of teams from ipl should also play qualifiers. What is this? is champions league trying to make a statement that all other teams have not won title in their domestic cirrcle? 4 top teams from ipl against rest? please justify the selection of qualifiers????

Posted by Solid_Snake on (October 11, 2012, 18:37 GMT)

Yayyyyy....Stallions won at last.Great perforance.Though they did not qualify for the main round. But still i am more than happy to see them playing like that :)
