Match facts

Start time 1730 (1530 GMT)

Big Picture

Kolkata Knight Riders and Perth Scorchers - both at the bottom of the Group A table - need a win to keep their chances of making it to the knock-out stage alive. The situation is direr for Knight Riders who have only two games remaining to Scorchers' three.

Knight Riders came into the tournament as a balanced team on paper, but both their batsmen and bowlers have struggled to negotiate the conditions. The result is they have not only lost the two games, they have lost them badly and that reflects in their net run-rate of -1.81. The form of two of their top-order batsmen - Gautam Gambhir and Jacques Kallis - has been worrying. While Gambhir has scored 5 runs in two innings, Kallis is yet to score his first runs in the tournament and that has affected in Knight Riders' ability to put competitive totals. The other concern is that apart from Sunil Narine, no bowler has had any impact. Knight Riders would hope that a change in the venue - Durban - would help them find their IPL form.

The Scorchers had a similar problem in their first game against Titans - they lacked enough contributions. While Nathan Rimmington and Brad Hogg were miserly, other bowlers were taken for plenty as they gave away 163. In their chase, only Mitchell Marsh (52 off 41 balls) showed some intent but he failed to get any support. The Scorchers have experienced T20 openers in Herchelle Gibbs and Shaun Marsh, and one of them will need to contribute as their following batsmen - Marcus North and Simon Katich - aren't exactly known for their big-hitting.

Watch out for...

Herschelle Gibbs was the second highest run-scorer for the Scorchers behind Mitchell Marsh in the Big Bash League with 302 runs. Gibbs was not only consistent during that tournament - he scored four half-centuries and averaged 43.14 - he also maintained a healthy strike-rate of 151.75. Gibbs missed out in the first match against the Titans, but he understands the conditions better than most in either side.

Yusuf Pathan showed glimpses of his ability a few months ago - in the IPL when he hit 40 off 21 balls. In the last outing against Auckland Aces, he stayed unbeaten with 22 runs off 19 balls in testing conditions. Yusuf might find the pace of the Scorchers bowling attack to his liking, as there aren't any tear-away fast bowlers.

Stats and trivia

  • Yusuf Pathan is yet to score a half-century for the Kolkata Knight Riders. His top score is 47.
  • In eight innings since the start of this season, Shaun Marsh has scored 98 runs.
  • Mitchell Marsh has hit 20 sixes in his career with the Scorchers, 13 more than Gibbs who is second in the list.

Quotes

"I am not sure how the conditions have changed but there is no doubt that they are going to be a little bit different than we have experienced in Johannesburg and Centurion. Not as much pace and bounce as we get there."
Perth Scorchers' captain Marcus North on the conditions expected in Durban

"We need to play some smart cricket, some better cricket than what we are capable of and try to get the results in our favour."
Knight Riders' captain Gautam Gambhir

Rain affected match between KKR and Scorchers means that's the end of IPL 2012 Champions run to at least for a Semi Final position in CLT20 2012.

  • on October 17, 2012, 15:30 GMT

KKR is struggling as their batsmen are letting them down.On paper it is a well balanced side. No one is lending support to Narine. Balaji is not suited to these conditions.

  • veeru1087 on October 17, 2012, 15:01 GMT

Why the hell KKR doesn't consider Morgan.. why to take him if they just want all rounders..he would have played a superb role in any other team. icy man is absolute fire..he is not even in probables.. u ignorant KKR - wake up and drop any of your overrated foreign players..

  • hemanth.reddy on October 17, 2012, 14:56 GMT

    the order should be 1)gautam 2)brendon 3)kallis 4)tiwary 5)pathan 6)shakib 7)das 8)bhatia 9) narine 10)balaji 11)abdulla narine 4overs kallis 4overs balaji 2overs abdulla 3-4overs shakib 4overs batia 2overs

@timtom: true, some of them don't even know that tamim is not a part of KKR, but pune warriors, but they still feel that their players are simply the best... And then they give weird logic such as people dont want shakib in because he's from bangladesh, and not a top test playing nation... And after saying that, they say the same for ryan tendo, that he shouldnt play as he's not good enough because he is from Netherlands... Strange.....

  • on October 17, 2012, 14:17 GMT

I think Sakib should be in the show tonight.

  • timtom on October 17, 2012, 13:43 GMT

Hey Bong fans.. Shakib is playing every match for B`desh.. Then y they still at bottom in all forms.. By Shakib fans theory his mere presence will make KKR win...COme on guys ..KKR needs a balanced side ...and Shakib may be in or out..It abt KKR and not Shakib....

  • hasib9 on October 17, 2012, 13:36 GMT

No Balaji in this match.. He is a pretty ordinary bowler, as most Indian fast bowlers.. Keep Shakib for batting strength.. I'm not sure if Kallis is fit though. Why do Indian haters think Shakib played bad in the last match? He contributed more than most other players.. kkr lost because of Balaji in both matches. Kallis and Gambhir not scoring.. Shakib put up a partnership with McCollum giving him the strike.. He ended up scoring just 17 (including 2lb), which is not that great but top order needed to score.

  • on October 17, 2012, 13:35 GMT

@Samin.Did both of us watch the same match because the last match Shakib played KKR lost badly drop him and play bret lee instead

  • baranasai on October 17, 2012, 13:25 GMT

I am not sure whether Tamimul is available to paly for KKR /he can get some good runs. Unless the opening wickets gets more than 45 the rest of the batsmen are under huge pressure and they cant do much to accelerate. It is upto Gautham to do positive display of batting. Bowling wise KKR should drop Balaji ? bring in who instead.no respite I give more chnaces for win to Scorchers than KKR .None of the Indian teams are evr going to make it to next round atleast if not winning it

Some of the Bangladeshi fans are ridiculous. They support ONLY their player instead of the team. That's NOT the way it works. If the conditions favour pace, then Brett Lee is the way to go. Shakib is more suited for Asian conditions, can't believe why they have him in the squad in the first place. The KKR team management is confused at the moment, I hope they leave the tournament clear headed though.

  • masoodali150 on October 17, 2012, 12:53 GMT

Wish you best of Luck Gautam, Awaiting for good result.

  • on October 17, 2012, 12:38 GMT

@samin: LOL, u want to send brett lee in to bat before rajat bhatia... Do u know rajat bhatia is a batsman more than a bowler... I think if kallis is not fit, a seaming all rounder should fill in... And that's obviously tendo. Also i can't understand why yusuf pathan is still in the side, he was exceptional in rajashtan royals, but since he has joined KKR, well u can see the stats. Even lakshmi ratan shukla is better...

  • baranasai on October 17, 2012, 12:26 GMT

I thinh the opening for KKR should be important. If they get 40-50 runs for opening wicket then they may get to 160-180.Iam not sure whether Tammimul is still in the team or not. Bowling wise keep Lee and give a chnace to another bowler than Balaji who has been slaughtered and lost his confidence . I predict voctory for Perth scorchers in a closed contest.

  • mohityash on October 17, 2012, 11:53 GMT

This should be the right Batting Order 1.Pathan 2.Bisla 3. McCullum 4. Tiwary 5. Gautam (of course 6. Bisla 7. Brett Lee 8. Bhatia 9. Narine 10. Abdullah 11. Balaji.

  • Samin on October 17, 2012, 11:53 GMT

@ Rodney Latloo Don't tell Shakib an bad player. if you tell him a bad player, Gautam is worser than Shakib. Shakib scored 15 in one match , Gautam scored 5 in two matches. you should he is no.1 alrounder in the world. Give him another chance KKR, he will blast Perth Scorchers. Shakib = KKR wins very easily No Shakib = KKR looses in a very big distance

  • on October 17, 2012, 11:47 GMT

For KKR, The bowling hasnt been their worries... the batsmen need to pull their socks up..

  • u.t.k.a.l on October 17, 2012, 11:33 GMT

    My KKR XI :- 1.Gambhir 2.Bisla 3.Mc Cullum 4.Shaqib 5.Manoj 6.Yusuf 7.Laxmi Shukla 8. Lee 9.Narine 10.Sangwan/Iqbal 11.Balaji

Drop Bhattia and bring Laxmi Ratan Shukla. He is a better batsman & bowler than Rajat Bhatia.

  • mohityash on October 17, 2012, 11:32 GMT

Top 6 over should be given for Top hitter. If Gautam ,Bisla & Tiwari playing initial 6 over what will be the result, every body can understand. These all are such boring player to watch starting over .I think the management sleeping for KKR. HAVE TO THINK FOR BELOW BATTING ORDER OTHERWISE BE READY FOR ANOTHER DEFEAT.

The Batting order should be like this for today 1. Pathan 2 . McCullum 3 Shakib 4. Tiwary 5 Bisla 6. Gautam (of course) 7. Brett Lee 8. Bhatia 9. Narine 10. Abdullah 11. Balaji

  • on October 17, 2012, 11:29 GMT

    Balaji is the worst choice

  • AzAb12754 on October 17, 2012, 11:07 GMT

@Rodney Laltoo: You may have a case that he's overated but lost the game? Funny Kallis went out for a duck and got 0 wickets and players like Gambhir, Tiwary etc failed completely yeah 'double standards' as usual so invalid point. The important thing is he has the ability to destroy the Indian bowling attack in quick time why don't you watch his last innings against billion India so you can remind yourself :)

  • ravikb on October 17, 2012, 11:05 GMT

KKR team should be Bisla, Gambhir, Kallis, Pathan, Morgan, Tiwari, Bhatia, Lee, Narine, Sangwan, Abdullah. No Balaji and Shakib please. Balaji is a street level bowler in all the conditions. Surprise he was in India's World T20 team! Shakib is a bit better player than Balaji, we can call him a club level player. He may come good once in 10 matches in sub-continent conditions but in these conditions he will never come good be it batting or bowling. So, Shakib should be kept out of the team.

  • on October 17, 2012, 10:41 GMT

Shakib is such an over-rated player reason why knight riders lost last game
