Auckland look to trip up Daredevils

Match facts

October 19, 2012
Start time 1730 (1530 GMT)

Big Picture

Delhi Daredevils have looked the best IPL side in the tournament, and they will be the favourites against Auckland Aces, but many a team has learned the hard way that you take Aces lightly at your own peril.

If Daredevils win, though, and win it big, they will be pretty close to qualifying for the semi-finals. They have carried good net run rate from the big win against Kolkata Knight Riders, and a second win will put them in a strong position in the group. Kevin Pietersen, who had left for meetings with England team director after the win against Knight Riders, is expected to be back in time for this game, and he will be buoyed by having settled his differences with the England team.

Aces, on the other hand, had their excellent run of wins rudely interrupted when they came up against group leaders Titans. They have won many a fan by winning both their qualifiers, and also their first game, but they can ill afford a defeat. Having camped in the Highveld well before the tournament, they have played there as if it's their own backyard, but they struggled in Durban. They will hope they catch their opponents similarly unawares when Daredevils play their first game at Kingsmead.

Watch out for...

Azhar Mahmood, with 137 runs at 68.5 and 10 wickets at an economy rate of 6.57, has been Auckland's highest wicket-taker and their highest run-getter, and easily one of the best players in the tournament. Auckland will look to him to provide inspiration against the much-fancied opposition.

Daredevils' top order has been the talk of the town, but Morne Morkel is equally important to their chances in the tournament. He leads an attack that can look weak without him, and will be pretty handy under the lights in Durban.

Stats and trivia

  • This is Simon Taufel's 92nd match as a Twenty20 umpire, more than anyone else.
  • With 10 wickets, Mahmood is the leading bowler in the tournament.

Quotes

"Keep it simple, focus on our strengths and try and execute a good game plan. And results will take care of themselves. We need to focus. We are not going to win matches by just turning up, we need to keep performing, we have to be consistent and win that. So we have to try and do that."
Delhi Daredevils captain Mahela Jayawardene doesn't want to get ahead of himself

This is now 3 games in 3 abandoned in the CLT20 2012! Also, the Uva Trinidad match was also washed out without a result due to rain. If this happened in Sri Lanka, fans worldwide will say Sri Lanka is the worse place to have a tournament. Any thought on South Africa getting this. Please dont single out Sri Lanka in terms of weather. I am making a kind request here. Look at Sri Lanka's home series this year. Hosted England for 2 tests and no rain interruptions. Pakistan came and only 2 ODIs were rain hit (1 no result other DL based) and 1 out of 3 tests were rain hit. India came in July and all 5 ODIs and T20 went hassle free. SLPL had 7 games rain hit I agree. Then the world T20 was perfectly fine (2 were DL declared and only 1 was no result). Compare the last T20 in West Indies where 3 games were DL declared and one was no result.

@Ranjith Shakthi: Try to keep yourself infomed, Varun Aaron has been out injured for the longest time, that's why he's at the NCA. And, btw, he and only he is responsible for the injury.

easiest match for dd? rain? rite! auckland aces have given blistering performances my friend, they arent weak. But im sick of comments like... when if an ipl team loses, they r flat pitch bullies, if they win, its bcos of their foreign bowlers. if yorkshire or auckland aces lose, well then its a bad day!

hard to get as why these tournaments are organised at the places where there is every chance of Rain spoiling the party...

@BravoBravo: I guess you'll be disappointed (as usual) when your wishes for a non-Indian winner fails to materialise. Remember the feeling last year? They call it deja-vu.

Rain are taking IPL Team Points.

MI & KKR were winning the match.

This one DD v/s AA was easiest of match for DD. I think International team(DD) v/s some small Club Team(AA)

I cant understand why people on his forum are only talking about guptill and aazhar mahmood, why not lou vincent , he is always a support in start scores big runs in few balls. and in DD except kp all are asian players and these pitch doessnt suite asian players that is why 3 teams of IPL are gone, and i think Delhi is the only hope for IPL , i hope they perform well, but all my favourites are auckland aces, conditions suiting them and one match which they lost due to bad eprformance, but before that there performance were excellent, i hope to maintain thier excellent performance

It looks like rain is going to save AA from a certain defeat. It is unfair to call this game a draw & award 2 points to each team when DD is so much superior to AA. DD has 4 pronged Pace attack + 5 pronged batting attack. AA has a single guy both in batting & bowling who carried them so far - Azhar Manmood! It is unfair to call this a Draw!.

  • POSTED BY on | October 19, 2012, 15:24 GMT

I do not understand this. Why is Delhi Daredevils are written as Daredevils on the points table, whereas Auckland Aces is written as Auckland. It is so difficult to in absence of a standard naming format.

Let's hope the weather doesn't intervene 2day. Durban is now kind to the slow bowlers having once been a fast bowler's paradise. Left armers have done well here, I will watch Hira with interest. Who will play the spinner's role for DD?

  • POSTED BY on | October 19, 2012, 14:15 GMT

Drop Sehwag. He is one of the worst batsmen in the delhi side

  • POSTED BY SamAsh07 on | October 19, 2012, 14:14 GMT

Thing with DD is not the about their ability, but the captain. Mahela is leading DD and I expect another choke in the semis or final.

Mahela and Sehwag will be the key...

"yes, atleast Mahela and SL teams have been consistent in losing world cup finals in recent years". what an achivement

As all of us known that DD has strong batting line up with SEHWAG, R.TAYLOR, MAHELA, KP etc., and bowlers like IRFAN, M.MOrkel, UMESH in their side we can say that it is the best T20 team in the world. But we cant underestimate any team so let us hope DD to continue their winning momentum in this tournament.

  • POSTED BY andrew27994 on | October 19, 2012, 3:58 GMT

I admit that on paper Delhi have the stronger batting lineup but I think Auckland have the better bowling lineup and most of their bowlers would be effective on this wicket. So AA should not be underestimated like all other IPL teams have done in this tournament. Personally I feel that Auckland are going to win this because the pressure is more on DD. I don't mind either team winning but I want to see a good innings from Sehwag. No one can entertain with the bat better than he does.

  • POSTED BY Pappu_bhai on | October 19, 2012, 3:22 GMT

Well another trashing on the cards.I predict Auckland will stop playing cricket after todays loss.Azhar Mahmood,Guptill and Mills will be afraid of bat and ball after todays game.NZ if you want them plz dont allow them to play today.Or else Delhi will make sure they will fear of hearing the Word bat or ball.Ha ha

DD will win this match with a bang....they are really top side and after a long time we are seeing DD is not heavily rely on Sehwag.......they have now Mahela, KP, Ross....so any one of four can carry the innings at there own....so I don't all these four will fail in a game.....and bowling attack is very good...Morkel, pathan and Unesh are perfect match for Africa condition....the only weak link is Agarkar and quality spinner but they should not be since if they put good total on board it not gonna affect them.........so go DD go......you will winner of CLT20

DD need to win 3 Matches to qualify for the next round. Auckland is one team they need to beat to stay ahead of them. In order to Win, they need to get Azhar Mahmood early. Auclkand rely on Azhar both in batting & bowling. Sehwag, Warner, Mahela & KP are strong hitters of the ball. Nagi is the only good spinner in the DD side but they have 4 seamers who can take care of the business. Hopefully rain does not ruin the Match as it has been doing for the last two days. Good Luck DD.

Delhi should win it... Though the aces have played pretty well till now, but still, DD are too good to lose this one.Sehwag, mahela, KP, Taylor, and young unmukt, amazing batting line up wit WARNER sitting in reserves... New ball attack of Morne and Irfan is perfect. The weak links are umesh yadav and lack of quality spinner. But not a major problem i guess. And since watson has returned to australia, the sixers are weaker now.So the group is wide open... Hope to see a cracker tomorrow!!!!

The match should be abandoned tomorrow due to heavy rain & they should get 2 pionts each
