Sachin Tendulkar, who has retired from the IPL, and Rahul Dravid, who has indicated the upcoming Champions League would be his last tournament, have been named in the Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals squads for the Twenty20 event. A Faisalabad Wolves squad has also been announced, in an indication of the Pakistan side's probable participation in the qualifying stage of the league, after political tensions between India and Pakistan had cast doubts over whether they would be allowed to come over.

Kumar Sangakkara is the only player who hasn't preferred his IPL franchise for the tournament among the 12 wanted by two sides, and has decided to play for his home side Kandurata Maroons. Explaining the process for deciding which teams these players would represent, Dean Kino, a CLT20 governing council member and director of legal and business affairs, said: "Players who were named by more than one team were asked to select which team they were going to play for. Teams were then allowed to replace any player that withdrew from their squad and elected to play for another side.

"CLT20 regulations state that when a player elects to play for their 'away' team, that team must pay the 'home' team $150,000 compensation per player. A 'home' team is classified as a team from the country a player is eligible to represent in international cricket.

"This payment is applicable for 10 of the 12 players that were eligible for more than one team. The exceptions are Kumar Sangakkara, who will be representing Kandurata Maroons, which is classified as his home team, and Thisara Perera, who qualified for Brisbane Heat and Sunrisers Hyderabad, neither of which is classified as his home team."

Lasith Malinga has not been named in the Mumbai Indians squad as he wanted to be with his wife and family, as they expect their second child late in September.

Group A includes Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Lions, Perth Scorchers and Qualifier 1 while Group B has Chennai Super Kings, Brisbane Heat, Titans, Trinidad & Tobago and Qualifier 2. Otago Volts, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Faisalabad Wolves and Kandurata Maroons will play the qualifiers beginning on September 17 in Hyderabad, with the top two sides advancing to the main draw starting September 21 in Jaipur and to be played across Ranchi, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Delhi.

too many ipl teams.. champions league is for champions.. in this case there is runner up. 2nd runner up. 3rd runner up. Next year half of ipl teams probably will be competing.

Posted by SyedAreYouDumb on (September 1, 2013, 18:50 GMT)

Shame no team from BPL is in as well as a domestic team from Zimbabwe. Also I think assosciate countries should join as this will make CLT20 more competitive and will give them much needed financal support... but it is a club competition.

Posted by FourSomeFearSome on (September 1, 2013, 1:12 GMT)

I do not normally watch T20 but Tendulkar is a treat to watch in any format of the game. I am in for CLT20 atleast the matches he plays.

Loyalty is not at stake it is a club cricket and that is private entity.

hats off to sangakarra , the only patriot around.

CSK is all the way! CSK is counted for final always whether loose or win. That is their strength. Wish you good luck lions....

Here is some laughable comments from SL fans about Sanga. He was called to play compulsory from the board and spoke about his loyalty to the board. That is why he is playing for his home team. Here people are making comments like "wow" awesome...

Posted by   on (August 31, 2013, 9:34 GMT)

Oh Goodie. Sachin being back is a good enough reason to watch the CLT20 for me and Millions of cricket fans world over. Yay!

Posted by   on (August 31, 2013, 9:06 GMT)

I saw some of my friends, compared Sanga with De kock and Badree. SRH and RR did not select them while sanga selected by SRH. SRH is yet to announce his replacement but SRH dont have foreign players except McCay. SLC messed up this issue. First SLC asked only Kulasekara did not asked sanga. Naturally sanga accepted willingness to play for SRH. Suddenly SLC blackmailed sanga with nation vs money issue. I think there is wide conflict between sanga and SLC. That is why he resigned captain though he took team to WC final. Due to this, SRH dont have chance to select De kock/lynn/NL mc cullum. The main culprit in this issue is SLC. Victims:Sanga and a little SRH . Next year he will not get huge bid in IPL auction because franchise need a player who stand by them when they need him.

Posted by samuelvin on (August 31, 2013, 8:53 GMT)

Why can't the ipl teams depend on their indian players rather than investing more on foriegn players which makes them to choose money over country. All the other club sides in the world have their own country players playing for them. For example, csk, sunrisers nd mumbai depend too much on foreigner's for their pace bowling department.

Little master is back.............Now I will watch CLT20..

Posted by   on (August 31, 2013, 8:11 GMT)

I saw some of my friends, compared Sanga with De cock and Badree.....Though they played for IPL, they have not been selected by IPL franchises to play in CPL.....The difference of Sanga is..He has been selected to play for Sun Rises..and he himself decided to play for the local team......

Posted by   on (August 31, 2013, 6:53 GMT)

I thinks Sangu take the right decision.

Posted by cnksnk on (August 31, 2013, 6:33 GMT)

We all know that this is a club level tournament. However this may be the right time to have countries from associate countries join in . Aghanistan, Ireland and may be Netherlands can be invited. instead of a qualiier may be we can have 4 groups of 4 teams each , we should add teams from England, bangladesh and make this even more competitive.. Surely there is space for including a larger participation and making the tournament more interesting to the cricket loving public across the world.

Posted by cnksnk on (August 31, 2013, 6:26 GMT)

One is not too sure on this home vs IPL ( or any other team) argument. It is not that players are too "loyal" to their home team. Some of us may remember that Hussey himself has just shifted teams in the local Big Bash for this year. So not sure where the loyalty for home team comes from. This is a pure club championship and should be treated as such. Also there could be other reasons why players choose IPL teams. 1) Given the strong teams the chances of them winning is perceived to be higher. 2) IPL teams are largely run by business houses in India. Typically the price money is not some thing that the management holds on to. I remember when CSK won the CL it was reported that the 1 MM prize money was distributed among the players. 3) In addition incase IPL teams win the management throws in a bonus as well. With all this at stake and no real test of loyalty is it any surprise that players choose the IPL teams. In addition a number of players have made their name due to IPL viz Morris

I bet the people who are here hating on this wonderful tournament will be one of the FIRST to tune in and watch the games. Can't stand the hypocrisy ! Can't wait for this tournament to start. Being an avid T20 fan, this will be another highlight in the cricketing calendar for me. I support the CSK team through and though. Led by a wonderful captain, and with some really brilliant players, the men in yellow should lift this cup with ease. Still, some good teams to beat. For those of you ranting about country and patriotism, try understanding that the players made the choice at their own discretion. Sanga is a different story, the SLCB made the decision for him. That is why he is upset.

Let us savour the fenious of Sachin for as long as he favours us and graces the field. Hope he plays Test Cricket for a long time to come.

The perennial entertainer Brad Hogg to play for Perth again. He's always worth a look.

Posted by   on (August 31, 2013, 5:08 GMT)

I think Samuel Badree has also not opted for an ipl team along with sangakara....He has chosen T&T over RRoyals....

Posted by doctorofdeath on (August 31, 2013, 4:34 GMT)

Why can't they just retire??? How long will they be playing the game?

Posted by   on (August 31, 2013, 4:17 GMT)

With all the heavy weight players opting to play for CSK , the team looks very formidable and unbeatable . CSK has maintained their core team from the start of the IPL , which has ensured a bond between players , thus ensuring a successful stint . I don't see many changes in the upcoming edition of IPL , in CSK team , unless the other franchises are hell bent on disbanding CSK .Keep going SUPER KINGS .

Posted by scarab666 on (August 31, 2013, 0:39 GMT)

Why is there 4 teams from the IPL yet only 2 max. from any other countries T20 competition ? To really be fair all players should be playing for their home team and only 2 teams per country/league. If we want to see more indians play then watch the IPL. I want to see Chris Gayle play for his home team not some Indian side.

Posted by   on (August 30, 2013, 23:05 GMT)

Such a shame pollard and bravo didn't choose team T&T, since this is the last time a pure team TT would represent the region in this format. Patriotism and national pride should have taken precedent over a few dollars more. Give the people something to smile about and the youth of the region the message of patriotism is the way forward. If money is the reason they choose the Indian teams I am sure the common man and cooperate Trinidad and Tobago would dip their hands in their pocket to satisfy their fancy. This is the last time these 2 players can give back in this format to the very team/people responsible for their existence.

Posted by VVSR92 on (August 30, 2013, 21:45 GMT)

Brad Hogg is also the oter player eligible for an ipl franchise who was either not selected or choose to play for scorchers If latter is the situation , that does not make sangakarra the only player to play for home franchise .

Respect to Sanga!! and Malinga is not there for Mumbai so they will struggle a bit

Posted by   on (August 30, 2013, 21:03 GMT)

Kumar Sangakkara has earned my deepest respect. He's a man who preferred his home team over all the money IPL team would throw to have him in their squad. Sangakkara has proved that not all things come with the price tag. His loyalty to his home team cannot be purchased or used against it. He is a blessed player and God has given him all the respect and fame world over.

Go well Sangakkra.

I agree with you Neville Smeda... Du plessis will not make the way in playing X1 for CSK in IPL & he should never consider in CPL as well... Michael Hussey, Dwayne Bravo, Albie Morkel, Chris Morris will be used as overseas... It will be better for Faf du Plessis if he played for titans...

Well, as a CSK fan, i certainly don't know the mindset of other franchise's fans as how they stay loyal to their teams. Unlike other teams, Chennai had a core group which stayed together all these years, and I am sad, this must be the last time these players might turn up for a same side. If number of players to be retained is 4 or less, it will be very disheartening to see as a fan. CSK is indeed a heavy weight whose local and international members will be a hot sale in the next year's auction. Even if Chennai decides to retain all 4 from India they have to pick 4 from MSD, Raina, SRJ, Ashwin, M.Vijay, M.Sharma, and S.Badrinath and not to mention the foreign stars like Huss, faf, bravo, Morkel, and others. Hope CSK retains the group once again, which seems very very difficult. I wish the CSK boys all the luck and hope they bring back the trophy for one last time before they get dismantled for the next season. Go CSK! And good luck to all other teams too.

Posted by   on (August 30, 2013, 16:54 GMT)

Faf du Plessis has chosen to play for CSK instead of Titans....yet he didn't play a single game in IPL this year. Would make more sense to have Faf play for Titans where at least he will get game time. Wonder if this is his way of making money for the Titans (the $150k payoff).

CSK will win this one. They are a proven unit with an AWESOME captain in MS Dhoni. If you ask me, one of the other 2 sub-continental teams can make it to the semis. Also, Trinidad will put up a good show like they always have done. The rest of them will find it a bit hard in Indian conditions, but we can never write off the Aussie teams.

Posted by BigINDFan on (August 30, 2013, 16:01 GMT)

I wonder if Thisara Perera and Lasith Malinga would have have gone for their home sides if their home sides qualified and no family events. Sanga's decision even if it was handled badly by SLC reflects that he is a class player on and off the field!

Posted by   on (August 30, 2013, 15:58 GMT)

I don't understand why people praise Sanga here, there is no patriotism in this case. Media has misled the public. this incident tested the SLC officials' character not the Sanga's.

Posted by Cpt.Meanster on (August 30, 2013, 15:53 GMT)

Some very good looking squads there. I am bitterly disappointed at the level of ignorance displayed by the ECB and their county teams. Why won't they play in this tournament ? It's an excellent way to promote their teams and people from around the world will get to see some English talent. Their Friends Life T20 competition finished many days back. They had enough time to prepare for this tournament, why didn't they ? This is why the ECB is antagonized by other boards. The world is moving forward, and English cricket is going backwards. Being a strong test nation isn't enough.

Posted by SL_rockz on (August 30, 2013, 15:41 GMT)

@ gtr800 I believe all IPL franchises have an excellent panel of managing ppl and selectors to find the best players for best Value. And they know who to select and what to pay better than you and me. Sanga and Mahela are simply legends ,so they(franchise management and selectors) know the value of them better than u.I bet you, for sure they will be selected for good money in next season as well.Whether they are contributing good or bad is another matter but your ppl will select them and pay them coz they know that how their presence will make a difference..You speak of rejecting them but unfortunately you are not in the selection panel... :)

Chennai And Mumbai are too strong for other team, though it will be good to watch.

Posted by Shazy777 on (August 30, 2013, 15:38 GMT)

Why player not prefer their home team... They prefer the money our their home team & country... They cannot realize that they build their name from home teams... Chris Morris is the part of Lions in cpl 2012 & the qulify for final due to that he made a contract in IPL & now he represent IPL team over their home team Lions what a shame...

@ThilankaK You wish! I guess its good Sangakkara is playing for his SL team instead of Sun Risers. He didn't really have much of an impact in the IPL anyway- was more a bench warmer. Him & Mahela get paid ridiculous amounts in the IPL yet they failed to deliver in the last IPL.

CPL is not yet an established T20 league ,get with the program , Chris Gayle is an overrated batsman and so too is Marlon Samuels and the likes of Nikita Miller ,Krishmar Santokie in thier respective disciplines. Competition in CPL was weak ,so naturally either Jamaica or Guyana were tipped to win the tournament ,Jamaica won predictably it's not that hard ,Andre Russell is probably the one player who deserves full credit for Jamiaca's performances ,he led with bat ,ball and fielding ,which cant be said for any other player in the squad !!!

wishing good luck to tournament and hoping like last year i enjoy an ipl team win at the comfort of my home while enjoying some quality time with my family. its natural to have best teams play for high quality cricket.ipl teams are stacked to brim with talented world class players and its only good for neutral public to view best players in the world showing their skills on the field.rather if cl2013 had some team from weaker test playing nations then it wud have resulted in losses for icc. window for this tournament is imperative as almost most of world class cricketers wud be playing in it and any international match without such players wud be drab affair.well done icc to providing viewers with exciting few weeks of attractive cricket.

@Raghavan: T&T was only allowed direct qualification because the English teams are not participating. If the English teams were there, T&T would have had to enter the qualifiers. It had nothing to do with past performances.

Why Bangladesh Premier League Team not in the tournament?

Posted by SirViv1973 on (August 30, 2013, 11:43 GMT)

@Allan Koodakeal, There were 4 IPL teams last year as well, noone has replaced the Eng counties there are 4 teams in the qualifiers rather than 6 last time. I think the BCCI has felt sorry for T&T after taking most of their best players so they have seen fit to put them in to the main draw this time & put Sunrisers in the qualifiers. However unlike last year when 4 qualifiers were elimanted this year only 2 will be so it's a pretty fair bet that with the players the Sunrisers have they will not be 1 of the 2 teams elimenated in the qualifiers, plus it gives the qualifiers some local intrest which will mean not all the games will be played in empty stadiums.

This competion is completley meaningless. I can't believe the ICC felt fit to grant this event an annual international window. The odds are stacked so far in favor of the IPL franchises that they may as well just use the 3 weeks to play a shortened version of the IPL. As an Eng fan I am glad that the counties have chosen not participate this year. The whole format is a shambles. Last year teams like Hampshire & T&T travelled all the way to SAF & were effectivley elimenated after 1 game! If the competion is ever to gain any sort of credibility then it should be a 16 team event with at least 1 representative from each of of 10 full ICC member countries. The qualifiers should be scrapped & the 16 teams divided in to 4 pools of 4 playing a single RR with top 2 qualify for Q/Finals, from which point it would be KO. All players who qualify to play for 2 teams should also have to play for their home team & not be given the opportunity to play for more money for a franchise in another country.

why the hell CSK dropped Dirk Nannes and took Jason Holder??? He is one of the best death bowlers in the t20 format

This is the 1st time that Dirk Nannes is not playing CLT20!!!

Its also sad that Mumbai Indians dropped Ricky Ponting,he should have ended his career after CLT20!!!

Faisalabad interesting squad.....but I think this time ipl team will not be able to win..

Posted by   on (August 30, 2013, 10:50 GMT)

@npc_cricketlover : Otago Volts is from NZL.. England teams have indefinitely refused participation in the tournament starting with this edition due to its dates clashing with the end of the County Championship.

@Er Pavan Kulkarni : Trinidad and Tobago received direct qualification on account of their good past performances. They were also chosen ahead of the winners of the newly-created Caribbean Premier League.

Posted by   on (August 30, 2013, 10:45 GMT)

Hahaha! So you mean to say no Chris Gayle, inspite of being a part of every other T20 tournament in the world?

Posted by   on (August 30, 2013, 10:40 GMT)

There are 4 ipl teams because there is no team from England. Otherwise there would be 2 ipl teams with another ipl team in the qualifiers.

Posted by Edassery on (August 30, 2013, 10:32 GMT)

Another meaningless tournament. Events like ICC Champions Trophy are discontinued and more meaningless T20 events like this are being played. They should call the tournament BCCI Champions League.

For all those who are praising Sanga, he may not have even been playing in XI if he had chose to play for SRH, For most of the games he sat out in IPL as White though not ta his best was contributing little better than Sanga and they do have Parthiv as WK. Parera, Steyn and Sammy need to be there in X1 with White (or Duminy) as the 4th foreign player. Sanga will not be missed by SRH. I think the only reason Sanaga is showing displeasure is to convey IPL Team owners that his preference was to play for IPL team as that is the only way he can expect good $$ for the auction coming up later and next year's assuming there will SLPL, this country vs money debate wont be there. He would not take chance this time of sitting out on bench for SRH as he has guaranteed place in X1 for Maroons

With the experience of Misbah,Asif Ali,Saeed Ajmal and some young guns like Ehsan Adil,i have strong belief that Faisalabad will qualify for the main round and will finish some where in top four.

Posted by SyedArbabAhmed on (August 30, 2013, 10:12 GMT)

There is no merit in it, 4 teams from India directly qualifies, and others like world no. 2 Pakistani team has to qualify, there is nothing like champions in it

Posted by shihan12 on (August 30, 2013, 10:11 GMT)

Even though Indian board putting lots of money in to this tournament..but still 4 IPL teams?? why they dont play IPL again instead of this..too many IPL teams.

Fsd Wolves is a perfect Pakistani Domestic Representative!! Mixture of Super Stars, Youngsters & some experienced Domestic Players. Wish them very BEST of LUCK to show their Dominance over all the other Top teams!

Inshallah! Faisalabad wolves looks much balance side. Hope they would qualify & win.

yeah mate wheres ricky? he injured or what? hats off sanga

Posted by   on (August 30, 2013, 10:01 GMT)

Hats Off to Kumar Sanagakkara for being the only player who prefers playing for his won country's only team playing in the CLT20! Heart-Breaking to see Bravo, Pollard and Cooper leaving their T&T and playing for CSK,MI and RR ! Shameful guys, same goes for Mike Hussy for abandoning Perth Scorchers and Shane Watson for not playing for Brisbane Heat! Absolutely no patriotism! these people play only for the money! well done Sangakkara! Now I respect you more!

A billion people and IPL takes all the West Indies key players LOL

Posted by Vindaliew on (August 30, 2013, 10:00 GMT)

I have new respect for Sanga and Malinga - obviously money is not everything to them! I'm not criticising any of the other players, of course, but these two just have an air or romanticism to them.

SRH looking strong on paper ..ishant sharma will b the weak point for the team

Posted by Mayank19 on (August 30, 2013, 9:53 GMT)

Probably the last time we will see Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid in a blue jersey. Watch out for Sep. 21.

De kock didn't choose to to for hydrabad

where is punter he is also retiring after clt20

Posted by king78787 on (August 30, 2013, 9:46 GMT)

Why has their been such a big issue over Sanga and his team? Dwanye Bravo, Mike Hussey and Shane Watson all are star players but their has been no issue with their team choice. Sanga has been unfairly blackmailed into playing for his home team and should demand compensation.

Posted by dirtydozen on (August 30, 2013, 9:36 GMT)

looking forward to watch the great wall: the rahul dravid for one last time. I hope that rajsthan wins the clt20 and let it make a great end to his great career. But is RR going to rely on a 41 year old spinner pravin tambe. or is maneria going to lead the spin department.

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (August 30, 2013, 9:35 GMT)

Pointless tournament with IPL taking all the players, you want competitive cricket not a one sided bore-a-than. The smaller clubs do not have depth to replace the players unlike IPL for example if Hussey chose Perth CSK would still have an international world class backup in Faf (who didn't even play in last IPL). It's disappointing to me because I initially thought CLT20 would be great creating a Club World Cup format but instead it has now become totally uneven if you don't have competitive cricket it won't last.

@Rakesh, You need to read the contents apart from team list :)

Lasith Malinga has not been named in the Mumbai Indians squad as he wanted to be with his wife and family, as they expect their second child late in September.

Posted by   on (August 30, 2013, 9:29 GMT)

The Kandurata Maroons look more of a proper Sri Lanka side than any other international tea in the CLT20..

Posted by   on (August 30, 2013, 9:27 GMT)

How come Trinadad qualify? didn't Jamaice win the CPL??

Posted by   on (August 30, 2013, 9:24 GMT)

Who will be the captain tendulkar or rohit sharma ?

Posted by 512fm on (August 30, 2013, 9:23 GMT)

Why is it called champions league? It may as well be called IPL 2 with a few guest teams

Posted by somethingdifferent on (August 30, 2013, 9:18 GMT)

eleven out of twelve chose to play for IPL and not their countries, and then they do not like to be called mercenaries.

Posted by   on (August 30, 2013, 9:13 GMT)

right rakesh good squads inshallah Faisalabad wolves will win the tournament

another worthless and useless tourament...this ipl and cl stuff has already killed the interest in this wonderful game

Posted by npc_cricketlover on (August 30, 2013, 9:03 GMT)

no teams from NZL and England leagues?????... It should have been as follows instead : IPL-3; SA-2;Aus-2;Eng-2;NZL-1;SL-1;Pak-1;Bdesh-1;WI-1 Divide them into two final groups of 7each.....or if it seems to many, then have a qualifier b/w 2 IPL,1Aus,1SA team to select top 2.

No ponting I thought he said that he was going to retire after clt20
