Champions League Twenty20 - 1st match, Qualifying Group

Faisalabad Wolves v Otago

Otago won by 8 wickets (with 13 balls remaining)

Ali Waqas and Ammar Mahmood are in the middle.. All set to go. Ian Butler, the former NZ international, will start. There is one slip in place

3.50 pm Alright, about ten minutes away from the start. Asif Ali's name has been doing a few rounds this morning as the one to watch out for.

jami: "was goin through age of wolves team n guess what 8 of them are 30 or above, typical misbah team"

'Volts v Wolves' -- wonder how they choose their team names.. Wolves, understandable, but Volts? I would have gone for Positrons v T-Rexs.

Glenn: "I'm pretty sure the 'Volts' name will be because of the hydroelectric power generation in the Otago region." ---- Thanks Glenn, that's a fair explanation.. Now if someone could clarify about the Wolves name too..

Mark: "Well, Otago Volts sounds a little bit more impressive than Otago Oxen, Otago Ostriches, Otago Penguins or, heaven forbid, Otago Ockers."

jamshed Khan: "I know there are no Wolves in Faisalabad for sure."

Hammad Raza: "Because every other animal is already occopuied in pakistan. Like Dolphin for Karachi, Lion for Lahore, Rams for Rawalpindi etc, etc. I guess only Wolves were free although not sure if there specie is found in pak."

Imran: "Faisalabad is the city with no Wolves, so they decided to name their team to wolves to add few to the city!"

azmta: "Faisalabad team should have been named as "Faisalabad Cotton" bcz of Biggest cotton and textile hub of the country"

3.30 pm Misbah has won the toss and he has chosen to bat first. He says the team's strength is the bowling and they are hoping to put pressure later with it. Brendon McCullum says he would have chosen to bowl anyway as he is excited to see the cover of grass on the pitch.

It's a warm day in Mohali - bright sunshine - so not very helpful if you are a Faisalabad Wolves player as they are wearing smart black gear with a tinge of purple. Otago Volts are wearing bright blue.

Zuhair: "Have a feeling Misbah wil take FW home coming in at 26 for 3 in 6 overs - scoring 58 not out of 54 balls. 0 fours 2 sixes"

3.15 pm Hello and welcome to our coverage of the Champions League 2013 - it's the fifth edition of the tournament and we are all set for the preliminary stage of the tournament. Four new teams have arrived from around the world and there are two spots available for them in the main draw, which features eight other teams. Today, it's Faisalabad v Otago.. It doesn't get bigger than this. Ok, that's overstating it. But it's good to have a chance to see domestic cricketers fight it out at an international stage. That said, there is a list of international cricketers playing today - Misbah, Saeed Ajmal, McCullum brothers, Ryan ten Doeschate.. It's a long list.

Reports say that Jacob Duffy has torn his hamstring and won't be available for the rest of the tournament. Ten Doeschate is also not available for the first game but will join the Otago squad for the remaining matches.

The pitch here in Mohali always comes with that promise of bounce and movement but has seldom delivered in the recent years. It has that green tinge today as well and this being the first game of the season, there might be more for the bowlers than batsmen.

Tanveer: "On paper Otago appears to be a better outfit but Wolves is not a bad side either .. fingers crossed for an exciting game to start with."

Nouman: "100th T20 Match of Sir Misbah...Good Luck Captain Cool"

Neesham to Mohammad Salman, 1 leg bye, he bowls a good slower delivery. It's full and it hits the batsman's boot, but that was just straying down leg

17.6

Neesham to Imran Khalid, 1 wide, bowls a wild wide delivery, way down the leg side

17.6

Neesham to Imran Khalid, OUT, the extra delivery earns him a wicket! Khalid makes room by moving down the leg side, gets a full delivery, but he drives it in the air towards extra cover. Easy catch for the fielder as the batsman doesn't get any elevation

Imran Khalid c Wagner b Neesham 12 (15m 9b 2x4 0x6) SR: 133.33

Morfi: "Let me predict: once more Misbah will be at the losing end of a match where he would have made the most substantial contribution and would also be taking most of the blame for it ... poor chap, something about him and natural justice doesnt quite work... :("

End of over 18 (9 runs) Faisalabad Wolves 117/6 (RR: 6.50)
     JDS Neesham    3-0-15-2
Mohammad Salman    1* (2b)      IG Butler    4-0-23-2

Saeed Ajmal walks in with a smile on his face. Wagner to bowl round the wicket

18.1

Wagner to Mohammad Salman, 1 run, he bowls a low full toss that is pushed to the left of mid-off fielder

18.2

Wagner to Saeed Ajmal, 1 run, attempts a yorker, but it's a full toss and the batsman slaps it to deep midwicket for a single

18.3

Wagner to Mohammad Salman, FOUR, he makes room and threads the gap between the point and cover fielder, there is no one in the deep either, beautifully hit

18.4

Wagner to Mohammad Salman, FOUR, another boundary! this is poor bowling by Wagner. He bowls a slower bouncer, but it's down the leg side and the batsman gets bat on it to help it on its way

18.5

Wagner to Mohammad Salman, OUT, he finally makes a correction, firing it quick and on the stumps. The batsman wanted to drive it through covers but he gets a faint edge to the keeper. He was so far down the leg side that his outside edge missed the leg stump

Mohammad Salman c †de Boorder b Wagner 10 (10m 6b 2x4 0x6) SR: 166.66

18.6

Wagner to Ehsan Adil, 1 run, he bowls it full, the batsman drives it to wide long on for a single

End of over 19 (11 runs) Faisalabad Wolves 128/7 (RR: 6.73)
Ehsan Adil    1* (1b)      N Wagner    4-0-25-1
Saeed Ajmal    1* (1b)      JDS Neesham    3-0-15-2

Last over, 140 in sight?

19.1

Neesham to Ehsan Adil, 2 runs, he gets a full delivery on off stump, which he digs out toward deep point and comes back for a second

19.2

Neesham to Ehsan Adil, 1 run, full delivery on the middle stump line, the batsman can only push it to long off for a single

19.3

Neesham to Saeed Ajmal, FOUR, oh well done! It was a slower delivery and the batsman walked across the stumps and lifted it over the keeper's head

Ahsan: "@Zeerukh: Ironic perspective, may I ask what do you think is the role of 5-6 other batsmen in the team if Misbah has to do everything?"

19.4

Neesham to Saeed Ajmal, 1 run, OUT, bowls it full and on the base of the leg stump, the batsman pushes it down the ground and calls for a second, but the non-striker is struggling to get back to the crease. The umpire asks for a review and he is out by a couple of feet

Ehsan Adil run out 4 (4m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 133.33

Ian: "What's the pitch like? I would have thought that if it was anything like a standard Indian pitch, the par score would have been something like 160 or more." --- Standard Indian pitch, I say Ian.

19.5

Neesham to Saeed Ajmal, 2 runs, a misfield at midwicket allows a second to the batsman after he had swatted the short delivery

19.6

Neesham to Saeed Ajmal, 1 run, full delivery, the batsman can only hit it as far as long on for a single

So Wolves have given Volts a target of 140 which given the start Wolves had, is a good score. However, the pitch doesn't have any venom on it and it depends on if the Wolves bowlers can get something out of it. The hero of the innings was again Misbah, who looked a class apart in a line-up of half-cooked batsmen.

Brian: "We are ready to trade Misbah with any batsman from Australian team (except Clarke). Takers?"

Rehan: "How about Watson for Misbah? We will even give you Imran Farhat for free.."

Saeed Ajmal    9* (5b 1x4)      JDS Neesham    4-0-26-2
