Champions League Twenty20 - 3rd match, Qualifying Group

Kandurata Maroons v Otago

Otago won by 6 wickets (with 12 balls remaining)

Ian Butler, who picked up two wickets yesterday, will start the proceedings. One slip in place, a short point there too

4.00 pm Otago bowlers were tight in their first game, but today they will be up against a left-handed batting line-up, mostly. The batsmen are walking in, the fielders are in a huddle.

3.30 pm Otago Volts have won the toss and they will bowl. They have brought in Ryan ten Doeschate, who has represented 11 teams in his career, into the XI, while Kandurata have also made one change, replacing Jayaratne with Suraj Randiv.

Daniel Jourdain: "I think this match will be decided by either Brendon McCullum or Kumar but honestly I'd have a better chance at predicting a coin toss then choosing who'll win this they are just so evenly matched. If either of these sides get through I think they could be a dark horse for the competition."

"Surprise surprise.. Still no chance for Rangana Herath," Yes Uwaisul, apparently he is still not fit enough.

Damith: "The issue with Kandurata Maroons lies in their pace attack. They don't have a proper fast bowler to support Kulasekara from the other end. Yes, they do have good spinners, but what's the use of it if the pitch isn't turnning?? Anyway fingers crossed for today's game."

maitland: "I do think Otago go in with a long tail and that is going to catch them out at sometime during this competition. I think one of the spinners could be dropped for Redmond."

3.25 pm The match will be played on the adjacent pitch with slightly lighter cover of grass. Ian Bishop says that it's uniform around the middle, but patchier towards the ends and that would mean that it could be a two-paced surface.

Khalid Arif Siddiqui has this assessment after the first day - "My money is on the Maroons. I think Maroons & SRH will qualify while Otago will be 3rd placed. As for the wolves....they have no chance, their batting is far below any T20 standard and does not have the capacity of posting any sort of winning score."

3.00 pm It is Kandurata Macaroons v Otago Voltaic Piles, as per Andrew Hughes. Kandurata Maroons finished their game after 11 pm yesterday night and they are back here to play another high intensity match, this one even more important than yesterday's as one false step and the Sri Lankan side could be out of the tournament. Otago Volts are in a better position after a thumping win against Faisalabad Wolves and didn't they look good? Brendon McCullum, Hamish Rutherford, Derek de Boorder, all looked comfortable, even against Saeed Ajmal, while their bowling enjoyed a pitch they felt made them feel at home. They will also have the services of Ryan ten Doeschate today.

Wilkommen to our coverage of the second day of the qualifiers. It's a sharp short round of matches, a bit cruel for the two teams who would be heading back on Saturday. Toss in half an hour..

0.1

Butler to Tharanga, no run, starts off with a gentle back of length delivery, which is defended easily

0.2

Butler to Tharanga, 1 run, another back of length delivery, but this one is on the pads and it's pushed to wide mid-on for a single

James: "I fancy the Volts to win this. Jayasuriya is no Jayasuriya."

0.3

Butler to Jayasuriya, no run, he is beaten off the first ball as he tries to defend the length delivery from the crease. It moves a touch away after pitching and goes past the outside edge

0.4

Butler to Jayasuriya, no run, short of length, with a bit of width, Jayasuriya punches it to cover off the back foot. The fielders throw hits the umpire at the non-striker's end, so the batsmen don't take the overthrows

0.5

Butler to Jayasuriya, no run, pushed to mid-on, but the fielder charges in to keep the batsmen in their crease

0.6

Butler to Jayasuriya, no run, another one beats the bat as the batsman doesn't press fully forward, it cuts away a touch too

1.4

2.1

Butler to Tharanga, no run, oh there is a loud appeal for caught behind! That was a cracker of a delivery! It was on short of length, on the middle stump line, and cut away slightly, opening up the batsman. But it took the thigh pad on its way.

2.2

Here comes the first change, it's Neil Wagner

4.1

Wagner to Jayasuriya, no run, starts off with a length delivery on off stump which is defended to point

4.2

Wagner to Jayasuriya, no run, he bowls it full and wide, looking for swing, but the batsman likes this length as he drives it firmly down the ground, straight to mid-off though

4.3

Wagner to Jayasuriya, no run, great work by Baz at cover! Is that a run-out? if that is, then it's a bonus wicket! The batsman punched the full delivery on the up to cover, where Baz dives and quickly turns around to throw the stumps down at non-striker's end. The batsman, who was backing up too far, just makes it back in time

4.4

Wagner to Jayasuriya, 1 run, the batsman looks to free his arms on a length delivery, but the ball keeps coming in with the angle and cramps him for room. The batsman just manages to push it to mid-on for a single

4.5

6.3

Wagner to Sangakkara, no run, length delivery wide outside off, the batsman shuffles across, but then leaves it alone

We were thinking of 170, now 150 looks difficult after that over. Excellent stuff from Butler

End of over 18 (3 runs) Kandurata Maroons 135/7 (RR: 7.50)
     IG Butler    4-0-21-3
KMDN Kulasekara    1* (1b)      JDS Neesham    3-0-28-1

18.1

Neesham to Kulasekara, 1 run, length delivery on off, the batsman chips it to long-on for a single

18.2

Neesham to Kandamby, no run, a good slower delivery on off, the batsman gets an inside edge on to his pads

18.3

Neesham to Kandamby, FOUR, he gets a freebie here, a full toss outside off and the batsman slices it past point for a boundary

18.4

Neesham to Kandamby, 1 run, full and on the toes, the batsman blocks it out towards midwicket for a single

18.5

Neesham to Kulasekara, FOUR, he is a good player, this Kula, and Neesham serves a length delivery to him, which he hoists over the mid-off fielder easily

18.6

Neesham to Kulasekara, 1 run, slower delivery on the pads, the batsman wanted to smash it towards deep midwicket, but gets an inside edge down to fine leg

End of over 19 (11 runs) Kandurata Maroons 146/7 (RR: 7.68)
KMDN Kulasekara    7* (4b 1x4)      JDS Neesham    4-0-39-1
SHT Kandamby    5* (3b 1x4)      IG Butler    4-0-21-3

Wagner comes in to compose the last over

19.1

Wagner to Kulasekara, OUT, starts off with a yorker, which is driven back down the pitch and that accounts for Kandamby's wickets as the bowler gets a touch at that one before it hits the stumps. Kandamby was backing too far down the pitch

SHT Kandamby run out 5 (4m 3b 1x4 0x6) SR: 166.66

19.2

Wagner to Kulasekara, 1 run, another yorker, the batsman pushes it to long-on for a single

19.3

Wagner to Randiv, 1 run, another full delivery on the off stump, the batsman blocks it out towards cover for a single

19.4

Wagner to Kulasekara, SIX, now he gets a length delivery and Kula sends this flying over wide long on into the stands. He made room but the bowler served it up right in his arc

19.5

Wagner to Kulasekara, OUT, the flurry of wickets continues! The bowler went for a fuller length delivery, Kula went for a reverse waft belatedly and makes no contact. The ball hits the leg stump on the full.

KMDN Kulasekara b Wagner 14 (9m 8b 1x4 1x6) SR: 175.00

Mendis comes in to face the last ball

19.6

Wagner to Mendis, no run, a good yorker again and it beats the bat en route to the keeper

Otago have done very well to restrict Kandurata to 154 when 170 looked probable at one stage. Upul Tharanga constructed a good half-century, starting off slowly, but then hitting those big sixes with ease. But there was no Sanga magic today and that hurt the Kandurata side. Ryan ten Doeschate, who arrived today in Mohali, picked up two quick wickets to rob Kandurata of the momentum. Then the faster bowlers cleaned up the tail very very quickly. We'll be back in ten minutes for the chase. Meanwhile, there is more bad news coming in for Kandurata - Rangana Herath has been ruled out of the tournament.

End of over 20 (8 runs) Kandurata Maroons 154/9
BAW Mendis    0* (1b)      N Wagner    4-0-28-1
S Randiv    1* (1b)      JDS Neesham    4-0-39-1
