Full Name
James Broadbridge
Died
February 12, 1843, Duncton, Sussex
Batting Style
Right hand Bat
With William Lillywhite, James Broadbridge was largely responsible for making Sussex a force to be reckoned with in the first half of the 19th century. One of the first round-arm bowlers of any note, in 1827 he was instrumental in bowling Sussex to back-to-back victories over All-England, although they lost the third when their opposition demanded that they bowl fairly (ie underarm). Despite the complaints, round-arm bowling was here to stay, and Broadbridge was one of its pioneers. A farmer by profession, he would often walk from his home in Duncton to Brighton to play.
