Kumar Sangakkara smiles after receiving three awards, Colombo, September 15, 2012

Kumar Sangakkara has won three awards, including the prestigious Cricketer of the Year and Test Cricketer of the Year at the annual ICC awards ceremony in Colombo. Sangakkara also won the People's Choice prize, an honour he had received last year as well.

For Cricketer and Test Cricketer of the Year, Sangakkara was chosen ahead of South Africa's Hashim Amla and Vernon Philander, and Australia captain Michael Clarke.

He was prolific in both Tests and ODIs during the 12-month voting period ending in early August: in 14 Tests, he compiled 1,444 runs at an average of 60.16, including five centuries and five half-centuries, highlighted by a match-saving 211 against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi; in 37 ODIs, he scored 1457 runs with three hundreds, and also completed 39 catches and three stumpings as a wicketkeeper.

"This is an amazing honour and I've seen the people who have won it before me and the nominees too, to be named alongside them is wonderful," Sangakkara said after receiving the Sir Garfield Sobers trophy for Cricketer of the Year from ICC president Alan Isaac. "I admire them greatly and even more so when I looked up at their records on the screen this evening. It's great to be amongst them. Now to receive this honour this evening, is simply fantastic."

Previous winners of the Cricketer of the Year award include Rahul Dravid (2004), Andrew Flintoff and Jacques Kallis (joint winners in 2005), Ricky Ponting (2006 and 2007), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (2008), Mitchell Johnson (2009), Sachin Tendulkar (2010) and Jonathan Trott (2011).

West Indies legend Brian Lara presented Sangakkara with the Test Cricketer award. "I'm continuing to ensure I am consistent and I need to keep raising the bar each year and keep trying harder and harder to ensure I keep playing good Test cricket," Sangakkara said. "It's a constant battle but I have the support of a great team that helps me to do the best I can."

Sangakkara missed out, though, on a third major gong when Virat Kohli was named ODI Cricketer of the Year, an award Sangakkara had won in 2011. During the period under consideration, Kohli played 31 ODIs and scored 1733 runs at an average of 66.65, including eight hundreds and six half-centuries.

Among the other winners was West Indies offspinner Sunil Narine, who was named Emerging Cricketer of the Year. His hard-to-read variations quickly led to him being labelled a mystery spinner, and he was instrumental in West Indies' series wins over New Zealand in all three formats in July-August.

Another mystery spinner, Ajantha Mendis, missed out on Twenty20 Performance of the Year, which was won by South Africa opener Richard Levi, for his record-breaking 45-ball century against New Zealand.

New Zealand's Daniel Vettori received the Spirit of Cricket Award for his sporting recall of a Zimbabwe batsman during a tense Test in Bulawayo.

Ireland left-arm-spinner George Dockrell took home the Associate and Affiliate Player of the Year prize, becoming the second Irishman to win the award after William Porterfield in 2009.

Women's cricket had two prizes for the first time, with the ICC awarding the ODI Cricketer and T20I Cricketer of the Year, instead of awarding a single honour. Last year's winner West Indies' Stafanie Taylor won the ODI gong, while England's Sarah Taylor took the T20 award.

Besides Sangakkara's three prizes, Sri Lanka won one more: umpire Kumar Dharmasena took the Umpire of the Year award. That ended a three-year winning run for Aleem Dar and left Pakistan, already unhappy at offspinner Saeed Ajmal's exclusion from two top award shortlists, without a prize on the day.

Well done Sanga,You deserve it..

There is no decision that everyone is pleased about it, thats the life after all. We all (probably, not !) know Sanga did brilliantly against other teams, in many cases, single-handly, compared to what Amla did. In Amla case, he had (almost in all cases) had good supports from other team members but Sanga rarely had good supports. To me, thats rubbish blaming any player saying he did well only in few matches. If we are honest with ourselves, we all (maybe not you!) know every player do brilliantly in some matches but fail in other matches, thats same for Sachin as well. Not just Sanga, Amla or Phillinder didnt do brilliantly in all matches. After all, these awards are decided by many field experts at different levels. so, a ordinary player cannot get a award like this. So, to me, we should accept these awards once they are offered. Not just Sanga, no one will get these awards when they dont play extremely good, so, just let enjoy Sanga the awards which he is deserved to get. Congtz !

hi, I feel proud when a 23 year old virat kohli from india has been selected for ODI cricketer of the year 2012. Congrats to virat. sky is the limit for virat. I wish that he will get many more awards for him and for india. rajkumar chopra Allahabad

Kohli scored 695 runs of 1733 (40%) against Sri Lanka and 183 against Pakistan. So why is every one complaining about sanga scoring only on Sri Lankan pitches. In tests he scored 748 (52%) of the 1444 at home with 516 runs at neutral venues. In ODIs, only 525 of the 1457 (36%) runs were scored on home grounds. Amla scored 378 of 915 runs at home (41%) and in ODIs 243 runs of 419 at home (58%). So don't see the big fuss. Please publish.

sachin no way.. he is a old hack.. SANGA U deserve t more.. Well done..

Posted by JayPmorgan on (September 17, 2012, 11:16 GMT)

I think Sangakarra got the award based on his consistency and standing in the games based on the last few years rather than his performance in this qualifying period. Much like the Oscars who give an award for a film which is not necessarily the best in the nominees, but is given to someone who has been nominated on multiple occasions but never won. The ICC 'Jury' probably saw this as maybe their last opportunity to give an award to Sanga and therefore took it.

congrats sanga u did your job brilliantly for your team this year!but i think there are two more players who deserve this award is Kohli and Amla. They have served their country very well in the whole calendar year!

Am quite surprised that Hashim Amla has been ignored for the awards. He has scored heavily this season and is instrumental in getting South Africe to No.1 spot in Test and ODIs.

Normally people selection by default would be Sachin, how come SANGA...?SURPRISED that AMLA Name does not fit anywhere here...

Hi, First of all, congrats to sanga, a great player, for his great acheivment. A very gentle player and teamsman. IT IS NOT STRANGE THAT HE HAS BEEN SELECTED ABOVE Sachin. He is the first Srilankan to receive these awards. Normally, A player is lucky after receiving only one award, but he deserves it. I PRAY gOD TO KEEP HIM FIT. Rajkumar Chopra. Allahabad

Both "KUMAR" Congratz... ( Sanga & Dharma ) ...!!! Accept the feeling of others... Many ppl here can't accept "Srilanka" get this many awards as a small country. ICC had "Reasons" and given points according to the same. And specially "Kumar Dharmasena" should deserve this. He is "Under pressure" when umpiring the match playing SL vs XX. But he never ever gave any prefer to SL. And his decisions are very straight & correct. Even "Sanga" amazed some decisions of "Dharma" & and the review shows "Dharma" is correct. I like both "KUMAR"s. Well done boys.

Ha ha Some one rightly said DRS is required for awards. I think it is more important to Verify Jury Decision than Umpire Derision since more disagreement. Hope BCCI wont stand against it

Hey guys, I agree that cricketers like Alma and Phil have done a wonderful job for SA in the recent past to take them to number one in the world. The ICC is not only looking at their bowling or batting performances but allround performances as a cricketer. This again not only their individual performaces but how they have performed when their team is under pressure. Having said this, ICC pickes nominees but they look at certain performaces (example: Sangakkara's 192 vs Aus) plus overall performaces. Therefore I think Sanga deserves these awards. Kohli will sweep all the awards next time if he performs the way he is doing now.

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 19:19 GMT)

shocking !!! no award for Amla. Amla deserves more than anyone.

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 19:12 GMT)

Although Amla deserved it more, still WE LOVE YOU SANGA

Posted by AllroundCricketFan on (September 16, 2012, 19:12 GMT)

Well, we all know either Hashim Amla or Vernon Philander were more deserving of these awards. Anyways, well done to Sanga, even though he would quietly admit astonishment at winning all 3. Well the ICC has to come up with a better and fairer way of distributing these awards. Starting off with not making the cut off period in the middle of a series. Well, if this is the criterion for next years awards, we all know whos going to win already. Messrs Amla and Philander should have their names on iit forthe 2012/2013 awards unless Sachin makes a hundred against Bangladesh in January.

Posted by Jabulani on (September 16, 2012, 18:54 GMT)

@bMike - that is a silly comment comparing Amla to Cook, and here is why...in 2012 Amla played only 7 tests but scored 687 runs at an average of 76.33, and 10 ODIs scoring 678 runs at an average of 84.75. Cook played 11 test scoring 687 runs at an average of 36.15 (not as good as Amla), and played 15 ODIs scoring 663 runs at an average of 47.35 (not as good as Amla). Those stats show how far ahead Amla is , but let's throw in Sangakkara's numbers and see how they stack-up. He played 6 tests and scored 594 runs at an average of 66.00 (not as good as Amla), and played 27 ODIs scoring 1111 runs at an average of 46.29 (again not as good as Amla). Seems like another South African player getting shafted by the popularity game...Philander too!

Posted by Uppercut07 on (September 16, 2012, 18:41 GMT)

amla and philander performed incredibly in conditions VERY familiar to them i.e. closer to home conditions, while sanga scored CENTURIES in ALIEN conditions i.e. away, with an average of 60! Add to that centuries against ajmal at HOME & AWAY! PLUS THE ODI CENTURIES IN AUSTRALIA

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 18:41 GMT)

For me the cricketer of the year is " hashim Amla "

Posted by monirbd on (September 16, 2012, 18:34 GMT)

It should have been Amla, and the best ODI player should go to Ajmal....loosing trust on this Award indeed.

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 18:20 GMT)

Amla placed well this year but he will collect his next year. Sanga is awesome and is backed up by his dismissals behind the stumps.... :)

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 17:03 GMT)

I am surprised at the comments of Amla and Philendra supporters. Guys they have done well but Sanga has almost 10,000 runs in test and over 10,000 runs in ODIs. Philendra fastest to 50 wickets? Sanga is fastest ever to 8,000 runs, 9,000 runs and in the verge of being the fastest to 10,000 runs in test cricket. In Colombo in 2006, when he and Mahela Jayawardene added a record for any wicket ie 624 against a South African attack boasting Dale Steyn and Makhaya Ntini. Sangakkara contributed 287 and did his burgeoning reputation no harm a year later when he went to Hobart and scored a dazzling 192 in a narrowly lost cause. Three world cup finals, two as captain and one as vice captain. Where is Amla in this regard ? Where in Philendra in this context ? Amla and Philendra has a very long way to catch up with Sanga.Test averages - Sanga 56.73. only second to Kallis in the present day cricketers and that also by a whisker of 0.21. Amla - test average 49.95. Philedra & Amla is way behind..

Posted by princechiran on (September 16, 2012, 16:45 GMT)

i dont think so currently there is no great player like sanga for test also playing superbly in odi's ........... no other player is capable except sanga for this award ....... congrats sanga im a huge fan of urs supporting u from nepal ......... cheers chiran

Posted by Perera32 on (September 16, 2012, 16:39 GMT)

@Murali Krishna: Mate I think you are mistaken, In Sanga's last 6 matches outside Sri Lanka he has scored - 1 double hundred, 2 Hundreds and 2 50's. And your Point about Dharmasena's is invalid because that was in the year 2009. Dharmasena had 98% correct decisions between 2011 Aug- 2012 Aug. Amla was brilliant in the last year but Sangakkara was better, he has a better average this year. And don't say Sangakkara only gets runs in Flat conditions because He has 100's in all countries and plays Seam and Pace well.

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 15:48 GMT)

Really shocking to see Amla not getting the award...Sanga is undoubtedly a gr8 player...The way he has batted over the last 1 year is simply superb...However, I feel that Amla should have got the award...He has played extremely well in Both Home and Away conditions and has an unbelievable consistency...He single handedly won the Test series against England...The triple hundred was easily the best knock of the year...In ODI's he'z simply beyond comparison... He has become the fastest to reach 3000 runs and has an average that is just a shade under 60... Considering all this, the ICC Cricketer of the year should have been Amla...

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 15:32 GMT)

i think amla deserves this award he has scored runs in england, india two completely different away pitches that to in 2nd innings which shows his class. my view he is going to one of the altime greats and sangakara has scored 1 century out of 6 test matches away from home asfar phillander is consider l think he will be blasted in sub continent conditions.dharmasena award is a joke i still remember 3 outs to tendulkar in same one day series.aleemdar deserves it.and finally ajmal with out forget award nominee is joke of the year.

There is no comparison to Sangakkara...He is the brown Bradmon

Richard Levi's 100 was not 45 balls, it was off 51 balls.

I am big time Sanga fan and think he is one of the all time great cricketers when you consider he plays all formats of the game and is a wicket keeper and has scored all over the world. His record this year is sensational with hundreds in both SA and Eng and against Pakistan - that's easily the three most potent attacks is the world. However, I fail to see how Philander missed this awad - his performance is like Brandman like.

Sanga is a great player- but Dharmasena should not even be umpiring at all. He even make mistakes while being 3rd umpire with all the technology to his disposal. All these people who vote or decide are a joke.

@Tughral Baig; Yo...my man, you don't make any sense here. First you called Pakistan bowling attack is a mediocre one. Then you talk about how great Ajmal is. Then again you say Sanga's performances were pretty ordinary although SL have a very good batting side. (Btw Sanga is the leading scorer in SL team) ..... So whatz up dude?? what r u trying say ????????? I do appreciate your effort going thru all those stats. But you've gotta really focus on what you really wanna say. Otherwise it all comes to nothing just like what happened here..Peace out!!!!

Posted by 777aditya on (September 16, 2012, 12:20 GMT)

Kumar, to my mind, easily qualifies as the best wicketkeeper batsman of all times. Of course, Gilchrist, Dravid (brief period), and Dhoni come close enough, but Kumar is the consistent best when both batting and wicketkeeping are considered together. Along with Mahela, he forges a pair that will be remembered for ages to come. I know this assessment will earn me umpteen brickbats much the same way when I said Kallis is the greatest cricketer of all times. But again, this is my humble opinion and everyone is entitled to one.

Congratulations Sanga!!!! We want more people like you in our S.L.side.All the best to you in the future.

Posted by Balumekka on (September 16, 2012, 12:10 GMT)

@Tughral Baig: First try to write a simple paragraph without having contradictions within it. Get your facts correct. You say that Sanga's record against formidable bowling line ups are poor. So how on earth he scored centuries against England in England and vs SA in SA during last year? You considered Pakistan as an mediocre bowling line up, and you said Sanga scored heavily against them at home. So what about Sanga's 211 vs Pakistan at UAE? You consider Saeed Ajmal as a great bowler, so how you say that Pakistan has a mediocre bowling attack? If you don't like Sanga, that's another story. But these selections were made by a panel of cricket professionals and not living room 'cricket experts' like you. So you have to admit the reality, although it is not your liking!!!!

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 12:02 GMT)

@ Mahaanama, firstly i must say 'yes' philander deserves it over ajmal and herath. why? well should we start with the fact that nobody ever to play the game ever anywhere in the 2000 odd tests played so far has taken 50 wickets as quickly as hes has (by no. of balls bowled) and when you take into account the 2 names on the list above him, CTB Turner (Aus), T Richardson (Eng) both achieved this in the late 19century when pitches where nothing like today and could be more likened to mine fields thats probably enough reason alone! lets compare some stats as well, philanders s/r is 33.1 he has taken 63wickets in 2091 deliveries. ajmal s/r 61.3 wickets 122 in 7481 deliveries. herath s/r 68 wickets 154 in 10481 deliveries. philanders 21 wickets in NZ are much the same as ajmals 24 against eng (they couldnt read spin if you spelt it to them), not to mention 24 home wickets compared to 21 away wickets! on 2 pitches he must know like the back of his hands!! PHILANDER NO1 test player in 2012!

Posted by bMike on (September 16, 2012, 12:00 GMT)

Why so many cryings about Amla & Philander? Alastair Cook has scored more test runs than Amla during last 12 months. Cook has also scored more ODI runs as twice as Amla did. So he deserves more than Amla. True Philander has been excellent with 63 wickets in 10 tests. But all of his tickets come at green pitches and one third of them against NZ. Ajmal has also played exceptionally well by taking 72 wickets in 12 tests and I would say Herath's performances are equally competitive as he has taken 70 wickets in 13 tests against all world's top teams like England,South Africa, Australia and Pakistan on both green and spin friendly wickets. So there shouldn't be so many cryings about Philander as well.

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 11:56 GMT)

Simply stupid decisions. ICC wiped out Saeed Ajmal only because they already decided not to give any credit to Pakistani players. Hafeez one of the best bowlers and ajmal above all. Not even sanga could play him well. Shame for ICC.

@Tughral Baig (post on September 16 2012, 10:37 AM GMT): the voting period was AGES ago. These awards are so far behind, that they seem rather silly now. Sangakkara's form in the shorter formats recently this year has been terrible, so at least he didn't win anything for these... As explained in another article, the recently concluded Eng:SA series was outside the voting period, so great players like Amla, Philander etc. don't even get a mention.

@Shrinaath Paravasthu: Get ur facts right and use ur brain before commenting man. Dont just put the anger and hatred at the top. Amla hasnt scored single run in spin wickets. but Sanga has scored in both the spin and fast wickets.

Posted by MichaelBurton on (September 16, 2012, 11:06 GMT)

@peter4135: Get your facts right man. Sanga scored at an average of 80+ in South Africa. Tell your flat track bullies to bring their tracks away.

@Tughral Baig Answer id the decissions have been taken by professionals who been playing the game and undestand the game well. Not a spectator like you so accept whats been done by the professionals and i know it herts when you men dont get an award best of luck for them next time...

Posted by MichaelBurton on (September 16, 2012, 10:58 GMT)

@JonB007: You are correct man. ICC should consider home and away, spin and fast wickets in giving this award. But this time even without considering this, they have chosen the right person. Sangas runs have come from both the spin and fast wickets and home and away. But Amla hasn't scored a single run in spin wickets.

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 10:55 GMT)

Kumar S very well done and equally so KUMAR DHARMASENA. Umpiring for 5 days in no joke and your level of concentration is what made you the" The Umpire of the Year". We are very proud of both KUMAR's and say thank you for bringing glory to Sri Lanka.

Posted by MichaelBurton on (September 16, 2012, 10:54 GMT)

@Lahori 92, peter4135: Thats is the beauty of Sanga. He did all these single handedly without any support from others. But, Amla had the support from greats like Pilander, Kalis, Devilliers and somany. So, you can't compare # of match winning here.

Posted by MichaelBurton on (September 16, 2012, 10:50 GMT)

@Sheelbhadra Shankar : Please open your eyes and brain before commenting man. Amla played only in green fast pitches, but not in spinny wickets. So, noway any means for him to get those awards. Had he scored atleast one third of runs in spinning wickets, definitely he would have been the award holder.

Posted by KumarEn on (September 16, 2012, 10:41 GMT)

Guys asks how Kumar Dharmasena got Best Umpire award ? perhaps he may be the Umpire with lesser no. of complains for wrong decisions.

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 10:37 GMT)

I do not understand what do the experts look at when giving out these awards. We hear so many times that statistics do not matter, what matters is where and against whom did the bowler take wickets and the batsman scored runs, then why aren't these rules followed. Looking at Sanga's record against the two most formidable bowling attacks he faced in the last 12 months his performance was very ordinary. Against South Africa in the three tests he played he averaged 30 and against England 9 in 2 matches. What is the point of scoring centuries against a mediocre bowling attack like Pakistan's at home? Hashim Amla on the other hand averaged 55 against Australia at home (SA pitches are great for Aus fast bowling) and an incredible 96 against England in England. Saeed Ajmal averaged 14 against Eng one of the best batting teams around at the moment and 28 against Sri Lanka another great batting side during the same time. Why have these performances been overlooked? Still looking for an answer..

Posted by Mahaanama on (September 16, 2012, 10:11 GMT)

No doubt Amla is a world class player. In the considered period Amla has scored 915 runs in 10 tests at the average of 65.35 but he has played only 8 ODIs. So it's not possible him to be the Cricketer of the year considering only test records. On the other hand Sangakkara has scored nearly 3000 runs(test+ODI) during the period and in ODIs he has 42 dismissals under his name as a wicket keeper. So he deserved to win the Cricketer of the year award. Philander has taken 63 wickets in 10 tests anyway 21 of them come against NZ. SL Rangana Herath has taken 70 wickets in 13 matches (against top oppositions Eng, SA, Aus, Paki) and Ajmal has taken 72 wickets in 12 tests. So is it possible to name Philander as the test player? So it should be Sanga or Amla. Out of all test runs Sanga has got he has scored 1006 test runs(at the average of 112) against Ajmal's Pakistani bowling attack that almost all teams struggled to face recently. Posted by Avidcricketlover on (September 16, 2012, 9:31 GMT)

Sanga was the cricketer of the year. But Test player of the year ahead of Vernon and Amla ??! That's a big question to answer. Personally I would have thought that Vernon Philander should have won it. It was his award only to be deceived. Kohli was the ODI cricketer of the year by miles ahead. The other biggest fallacy of this award is Dharmasena getting an award. Simon Taufel and Aleem Dar are light years ahead. Simon taufel is the best umpire there is now.

Posted by ut4me87 on (September 16, 2012, 9:31 GMT)

Cricketer of the Year and Test Cricketer of the Year are more like life time achievement awards. So young people don't get it. If you look at the past winners, it is the all time greats, Dravid, Ponting, Tendulkar etc. I am sure nobody will argue that Sanga does not fall in that category having scored runs everywhere.

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 9:14 GMT)

ICC I don't know who are judging and whats the Procedure. - Including Shahid Afridi as an All rounder in ODI team, Shakib or any other player deserved it. -Ajmal deserved at least a nomination. -Kumar Dharmasena as the Best Umpire. haha Seriously u kidding me. Simon Taufel or Aleem Dar should be obvious. -Amla had a excellent run this year, not even a name of his in this Awards. Shame. He is to be Player of the year and to b in the so called ODI team of the year.

After only playing in fast bwling friendly wickets you cant say Vern is the best lol did he played in sri lanka , india ?? did he took wickets in Sub-continent ?? and about amla just be honest he cant match the class of sanga... please SA come to sri lanka n win a test series if u can lol even without great murali n vass we will win it esly :)

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 9:02 GMT)

So the verdict is out, finally. Who cares. Not me at least, and perhaps many more who share even a basic mathematics felicity. Cricketing brain is an added advantage. ICC's test player of the year scores some 420 runs in 13 innings sans Pakistan during the period averaging 32 point something. At the same time, it is perhaps not inconsequential to question the efficacy of Pakistan bowling attack that Sanga managed to make mockery of all this while. In contention were two irreverent conjurers(by any means): A bearded gentleman, who resembles Buddhist monks' serenity in Harsha's words, was almost otherworldly in conjuring fabulous knocks one after another; Big Vern just went past many greats who ever have bowled a cricket ball. Its just smacks of something better understood than said. Anyways many congrats to Sanga whose performances I never intended to belittle.

Its a batsman's game folks! Getting to 50 test match wickets the fastest in 100 YEARS doesnt get you an award. Totally outrageous, feel sorry for Vern.

To a certain extent I agree with Posted by TommytuckerSaffa on (September 16 2012, 05:49 AM GMT). Hashim Amla should have been the cricketer of the year as he had scored more than 1K runs on diff tracks in both formats in the period for selection. IMHO Cricketer of the year : Hashim Amla. Test cricketer of the year : Philander/ Amla

Well done sanga,.You deserve it more than all.You have proved your talent in and out subcontinent. You are one of the best gentleman this game had seen.Your people's choice award proves it all.It is a very good honour to be nominated with sachin. But to win sachin in people choice award is awesome and out of the world. You are truly a cricketer of the year.More than all it shows how consistent you are in this game.Your matchwinning performance in durban and uae are highlights of the year. Sanga you made me cry when you said """" I am Tamil, Sinhalese, Muslim and Burgher. I am a Buddhist, a Hindu, a follower of Islam and Christianity. Well done sanga, You deserved all 3 awards!!! I am sure the South African fans cannot stomach ths and it Natural. On Amla - How many times, have he pulled the team out of trouble,? Has he ever palyed in Sri Lanka, Australia,New Z, Pakistan ? Pakistan has the best BALANCED bowling attack which can adopt to any condition. What has Amla done against them. Philander needs to perform arround the globe, especailly on flat tracks. Better Luck for South African Fans for next time. After all we all accept SA is the best team in the world , right now.

I can see few people saying in their comments this is not fair and bla bla..... Amla deserves this...Philander deserves this and again bla bla....guyzzz this decision was an out come of a highly regarded judge panel: Clive Lloyd, Mavan Atapattu(SL), Tom Moody(AUS), Carl Hooper(WI), Cay Corner former England woman captain....& they were there at the panel becoz of their high level of cricketing knowledge....those who says "i'm better than them"...plzz be seated 2013 ICC awards judge panel ..plzzz :D :D

Sanga - good player but with 1400 test runs of flat tracks wins it - outrageous!

To all those complaining - if a guy wins this award that is because he is the best. The award is determined by the best in the business, not some ignorant, losers.

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 5:35 GMT)

Sangakkara is the least talented guy among the top performers. He does not have the spirit of this game at all, but at the same time he is the one who talks the most about the spirit of this gentlemen's game. that's one of the reasons, he is not so very popular outside Sri Lanka even though he has been able to play few wonderful knocks. Nevertheless, congratulations to this guy... Hope someone more deserving gets this award next time onwards, like alma or .... Who really deserves :)

Posted by SamRoy on (September 16, 2012, 5:31 GMT)

Test Cricketer of the Year to Sangakkara is a blatant mistake. Just because he played Ajmal brilliantly surely can't be the reason for giving him the award. He averages less than 30 in England and SA. Philander was sensational and deserve it more than anyone else. Amla was the second best. Overall though, Sangakkara was the best as the rest don't even play all formats.... I agree that Sangakkara has been the best test batsman over the last 5 years.. Kallis being the second best....

Posted by cricmerc7 on (September 16, 2012, 5:26 GMT)

I really don't understand how people think regarding this. Wickets and runs do not create a great cricketer. They are of course needed, but it is all about the human being inside. I respect amla, he is a great sportsman. Hopefully he will grab some awards next time. But at this moment, you can't find a better person than sanga to give these awards.

Posted by sabeeh89 on (September 16, 2012, 5:20 GMT)

Actually you do see home sides trying to sneak an advantage here and there. In the NFL, teams use turf (which is faster) or grass (which is slower). Baseball (all parks have different dimensions). Difference is, cricket is a GLOBAL game and weather has a huge difference on the game.

Also, what would be the "standard", would it be Australian/SA pitches and their bounce, England and their swing or India/SL/PAK and their spin.

How would it be fair to the rest of the nations to go with one standard over the other. You dont have to change just the test grounds but the grounds wear the academies practice so they become used to the standard.

The great thing about cricket is the variations and unpredictability.

Don't get me wrong - I like Sangakkara (all knowledgeable fans agree he is a top notch player) but some of the comments about Amla and Philander and Amla not playing in the subcontinent make me YAWN. Amla has scored plenty of runs in the subcontinent previously so I am sure next time he plays there he will score plenty more. It is a valid comment about Philander. However, SA plays a fraction of the ODI that Sri Lanka plays (for whatever reason. What I am trying to say is that this cricketer of the year award may be a bit subjective. I do agree with the comment that Sangakkara played most of his cricket in his own environment last year and actually influenced comparitively few games. The award seems to me to be yet another bit of ICC grandstanding.

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 3:31 GMT)

Virat Kohli thoroughly deserves the ODI Cricketer of the Year 2012 award. During the period under consideration, Kohli played 31 ODIs and scored 1733 runs at an average of 66.65, including eight hundreds and six half-centuries, most of the time leading India to victories single-handedly. A true transition from his U-19 days to senior team with consistency the key to his Success. Keep it up VIRAT, with your FEET FIRMLY routed to the Ground.

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 3:24 GMT)

@Mervo: Get your facts right man. Check the Sangas and Amlas home vs away and fast vs. spin wickets statistics in cricinfo. Then you will realize the reason behind Sangas award. Amla hasn't played in subcontinent spin wickets at all. So how could he be the cricketer of the year.

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 3:10 GMT)

When a batsman scores 3000 runs in a calendar year, staying fit and performing consistently home and away. he is the 'cricketer of the year'. Amla and Philander have played mostly at home. while Sanga have played and scored all over the world. Amla has only played 8 odi's. can you judge on that.no. Sanga deserves it. and people's choice, Sanga won it last year too. it just means that even Indians haven't voted Sachin and the rest of the world, specially dear Pakistani's have voted for Sanga. Publish

Posted by Mervo on (September 16, 2012, 2:58 GMT)

I'm sorry I just cant see how he could possibly have won this award. He influenced so few games and played almost exclusively in his own country. It makes no sense at all. I wonder who makes these decisions?

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 2:58 GMT)

sangakkara the most gentlemen player in the world of cricket..congrats. he is more capable of winning the test palyer award..

Posted by Balumekka on (September 16, 2012, 2:55 GMT)

Some people simply unable to understand simple logic behind the selection for these awards. During the given period, Sanga scored heavily in tests and was the highest test scorer (in Sri Lanka, UAE, South Africa, England) on both spin friendly sub-continent wickets and fast bouncy pitches (vs Pakistan, England, South Africa and Australia). Some of his centuries are match saving (211 vs Pakistan at UAE, 119 vs England at Southampton and 108 vs SA at Durban). He was the 2nd highest scorer in ODIs and also kept wickets in ODIs and T20s. True that Amla and Phillnder too had superb seasons, however they were never tested in SUB CONTINENT and only played on fast bouncy pitches they are used to. So, Sanga won the trophies deservedly!!!!!

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 2:55 GMT)

congratz sanga... u r da best... no doubt about that...

Heartiest congratulations Kumar Sangakkara. You truly deserve this distinction.

Posted by JonB007 on (September 16, 2012, 2:44 GMT)

Sanga deserved to be in the top 3 in test, but, in my opinion Amla should have gotten the award. Yes during the period under consideration he played well, but, that depends on in they are playing at home or away and that problem will not be solved when the core of the playing field(the pitch) is in one way or another equalized. Barring weather there has to be a standard in preparation of the pitch, its unsportsman like when pitches are prepared for the home team. One does not see these kind of preparation for the Olympics or like race tracks (in thoroughbred dirt racing where thousands of tons of soil is brought from around the world to try and make the playing field equal) so why cannot ICC do some research & come up with a formula as to how and what combinations of soil be used to prepare a pitch which will benefit all types of bowlers & batsmen. When the above type of standard is done then only one can claim they are a true champion and this goes for all countries.

Posted by MichaelBurton on (September 16, 2012, 2:29 GMT)

Congrat Sanga! You truly deserve it. Amla is also a better player, but he hasn't scored in subcontinent spinning wickets. But Sanga has scored well in the subcontinent and fast bouncy ptches. Ex: recent South Africa series averaging 80+. To become a trure legend you have to play well in spin wickets as well.

Sangakara is not only just a batsman, he is a multifaceted, well-groomed, captain of a dynamic cricket team, polished, allrounder of world order. Above all he has always displayed himself both at home and abroad as a perfect gentleman-a true Buddhist. True to himself, his avowed profession and to his great country, he has always thought of his couyntry and not just his Captaincy post. These qualities he has displayed on many an occasions. . By winning these awards which he so richly deserves, he has broujght glory to his motherland above all. What impressed me most whilst watching him [;lay the IPL tests and many others, even during testing times, he has always demonstrated HUMILITY, genetlemanliness, and true sportsman spirit. Let me challenge, hardly any in the entire Cricket world can match Sangakara . I am not a Srilankan, but in the gentlman's game of cricket country does not matter, but it is the true character of a sportsman that matters most. ICC did the very best

Posted by ozwriter on (September 16, 2012, 0:19 GMT)

who makes these decision. if you look at stats, amla or philander deserved it more. philander, a record in a century of test cricket; amla leading his team to no.1 with triple century. sanga only got 1400 runs in flat tracks, thats been done every year for last 2 decades. what philander and amla achieved is unique, rare, outstanding and therefore much more deserving.

Posted by RobTay14 on (September 16, 2012, 0:06 GMT)

I didn't think he even had that great of a year, sure he maybe deserves it, but I think Philander definitely should have gotten it..

Posted by SLfan on (September 15, 2012, 23:57 GMT)

It's a usual habbit of people to criticize things when something does not match their own opinion. So no one other than themselves should care about those ideas because it's their right to have different views on anything. What really matters for the world is the ideas of the jury. So jury had made a decision and they have made it clear as well. So move on people, because in this short life time we have lot of things to do rather than stuck in one place !

Posted by steveoehley on (September 15, 2012, 23:29 GMT)

What a joke. 4 test hundreds against pakistan, but only 1 against SA and Eng combined with an average of 30. And Philander misses out on the Test cricketer of the year after 50 wickets in 7 tests. How is it that the award is decided on which player has played twice as much cricket therefore more runs? About time a bowler got the award.

Without Hashim Amla and Saeed Ajmal this ceremony looked a big Joke

It's what you get when you don't play any top teams. Give him the award for next year as well, look who they play! Their needs to be a better ranking/performance than just runs against anyone. SL may as well just schedule 12 tests against Bermuda.

Posted by Happy_AusBang on (September 15, 2012, 22:39 GMT)

Sangakarra is one of the best going around at the moment, there is no doubt about that. I am not so sure that his performance is better than Amla though during the period under consideration. The huge bulk of Sangakarra's runs were scored at home or UAE against Pakistan. Amla scored heavily away from home and against almost all opponents.

I believe the final decision should have been between Saeed Ajmal and Hashim Amla; the latter would probably have got it.

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 22:36 GMT)

Kevin Peiterson should take a page from Sangakkara's book where being diplomatic is concerned..... This is a smart guy and a smart cricketer, just look at his comments... praising others before himself... I wish others was smart enuff to be like him!!!

it is a bad day for cricket when the fastest man to 50 wickets ever does not receive acknowledgement somewhere. I am not South African but let justice be done.Philander is surely a phenomenon. The emerging player of the year would have done if the otgher awards were not available, and Amla?-surely the best player around at the moment. .

Congratulations to Sangakara BUT Dharmasena? Seriously?

Posted by NeutralFanNameTaken on (September 15, 2012, 21:21 GMT)

As a neutral fan, i was surprised when did sangakara scored run this year so i checked statsguru. Sangakkara: Mat Inn Runs avg home 2010-2012 11 19 976 65.06 away 2011-2012 6 12 364 30.33 neutral 2011-2011 3 6 516 86.00 Out of these runs, 1006 runs were scored against pakistan at 111 avg. vs australia, he avg 44.60, vs eng 21.90, vs sa 30.00, vs pak 111.77, WI 76.00.

Amla: home 2010-2012 8 13 628 48.30 away 2012-2012 6 10 671 83.87 neutral 2010-2010 2 4 264 88.00 Most of amla runs(482) were scored against england at 120.50 avg. vs australia 59.75, vs India 50.00, vs nz 47.25, vs pak 88.00, vs sri lanka 34.75

So according to ICC, runs scored at home against pakistan have more value than runs scored against england away from home. my money, i will surely won't put on sangakara unless he is playing against pakistan at home. Sangakara is good batsman but better than amla umm ...not even close i would say

Amla & Phillander where too one dimensional as far as playing conditions are concerned, to win these awards. As i see it - the real contests for these awards were between Michael clarke and Kumar. These two were the pillars of their team, which are going through a rebuilding phase and have much more expectations & are under constant pressure to perform from their fans & teammates. I have to say both of them did quiet well. Michael clarke had an advantage over Kumar as he was part of at least two hyped series (any thing against my team cannot miss the media radar, I have to say we Indians are a bit over-excited when our team is playing). But Kumar did his stuff quietly & very efficiently (with all those inexperienced players around him) & is the most deserving candidate to win these awards. Congratulations to him and his family, especially his lovely wife and their children & to all his fans.

I have been critical of Ajmal not getting a look in amongst the nominations but I cannot fault Sangakkara receiving top honours. Oh that there would be more like him, both as a player and as a statesman for the game!

Virat Kohli 1733 runs in one year for a 23 year old lad.... thats truely remarkable... Most deserved ODI player of the year... AND should hav handed the emerging player of the year award too to him...

How does Amla not get at least one award?!?!

The guy had a phenomenal year in both Tests and ODI's, also helped SA reach the no. 1 position in Tests, NUMERO UNO!!

Sanga had a good year but Amla deserved it more and I would have not been surprised, if he had made a clean sweep in all three categories.

Also, Dharmesena had made some abysmal decisions but is still selected for umpire of the year?!?! o.O

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 19:22 GMT)

Everything ok but "kumar Dharmasena best umpire" shame for cricket.

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 19:12 GMT)

dear sanga,

when we need you were there to perform. there is no second word you are the best this time. as most says you are the best lefthander today and may be the best all time.lets see with time. Koli was at his best so early in carrier if i am not mistaken he should awarded back this to sri lanka as he has punished SL most.all other winners even deserved.Only worry for me is Ajantha's non recognition of best balling ever in T20s. but even as the a spectator we were not noticed it as a record as it was so cool. but levi had a one of the worst fire in T20s .well sri lanks ou had a wondeful 2012. keep it up in WC of T20s, which plays in your home. all the best.

Great Going, Virat....Still many "Virat" things to be achieved...This is just the start...Keep the same hunger for runs forever for our "India"...I think 'Test Cricketer of the Year' should have be given to 'Vernon Philander', since he lead his team to win many tests in this year, which is not the case for 'Kumar Sangakkara'...

I thought that Hashim Amla deserves both awards respectively and it was unfair with him.... but after checking the record book Sanga has the every right to win all the awards. No question about Kohli. He is as fantastic as sanga. Congats to both of them....

Well, all you Sanga haters there is one thing to say to you.... "Who's laughing now ah....!" no matter what you say Sanga won the 3 most important awards of the night which includes people choice award aswell...! So selection panel's decision has been approved by the public too....! And no-one can find a single valid reason why Sanga shouldn't deserve them. Sorry if your personal choice didnt get any notice..:p..! Sanga had a prolific year in all formats and infact he has been the best batsman in the world for the past decade anyway.....Weldone Sangakkara.... you truely deserved it.....!

Posted by 2.14istherunrate on (September 15, 2012, 17:51 GMT)

Really I think it is a bit overdone that he gets all three awards when there were better candidates for all of them- I guess pandering to the hosts seems a good thing to some. Philander,Amla, Ajmal all had as good if not better claims. I for one would prefer a more balanced awards system but of course they have to stay there for the farce which follows-ie t20 WC.

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 17:44 GMT)

why most people keep saying sanga scores in flat tracks....cant u guys remember he scored centuries against tough teams, against england in england and againstSA in SA.....and also he read and played ajmal well than any other player, infact world no. 1 england found it hard to read ajmal i agree that amla deserves it , bt sanga deserves it more.amla gets support from his teammates who are very consistent .sanga scored those runs with a less consistent team compared to SA.....So please stop blaming about the desion, its a fair desion

All those guys who say amla more deserving than Sanga, I'd say Amla is more deserving than kohli. Of his hundreds how many of them were against SL? 3? 4? how many years Amla has been on the no 1 ranking in ODI's? So i'd say Amla will get his chance. Amla would be all Sanga is now for sure. ICC has spoken. Now get over it!!

@Chamara Meegaswatte : Sanga is very very good no doubt, but it is too much of a stretch to call him 'spirit of cricket'. He is anything but that. Excessive appealing, claiming false catches/stumpings, and his shenanigans at the tosses and off the field several times are all to be seen. So let's be honest here. Fine batsman yes, but definitely very low on the 'spirit of cricket' ladder.

Posted by The_Aeroboy on (September 15, 2012, 17:28 GMT)

@peter4135: Sangakkara is the best Test Batsmen in the world right now. He has a higher average than Clarke and Amla in the last year. He scored a match winning 100 vs SA in SA. He played Ajmal well got back to back 190's. Remember how England and Australia played Ajmal?.

Congrats Sanga, Narine, Vettori & Kohli... but Amla deserved atleast one of the batsmen award, Amla had superb average in both formats and even Ajmal & Aleem Dar should had been rewarded for their brilliant performance last year... If I was a cricket board official, I would love to boycott this...

Posted by YaksNad on (September 15, 2012, 17:12 GMT)

Ummm. While being partisan to ones country is not uncommon, I have found the Sri Lankans to be remarkably focused in their arguments and fact representation. Someone mentioning Sanga performing well when close to 40, when he is more like 34 years old. Another one talking about the world cup final, what with the nice touch at the toss by our beloved Sanga. While I do consider Sanga a good batsman, I find his shrewdness more remarkable. Nothing wrong in being shrewd though. It is worth calling out nevertheless.

Posted by SICHO on (September 15, 2012, 17:12 GMT)

This is a joke!! How can Sanga win ahead of Amla and Philander? Average tour against SA, made James Anderson really look good against left handers and 190s against the weak Pakistan(because they rely on Ajmal). While The Vern and Hash performed against top teams with less matches, they get nothing for their precious work. Shame.

Posted by Master_Mihil on (September 15, 2012, 17:11 GMT)

Watched Braveheart to the end. At the closing credits saw Sanga wins big! Feeling was epic!! I'm very happy Sanga, and i'm happier because he plays for us. Long live the legend!!

Posted by maddy20 on (September 15, 2012, 17:07 GMT)

Sanga edging Amla out? How many of you here agree that Amla is move deserving of the award? I do not remember SL winning a single test series. They won the odd match here and there but over all they have won 0 series including tied home series vs Eng and lost the home test series to Aus. Its baffling to say the least.

There is a big difference in scoring a 100 to save a match and scoring a 100 in a wining match...That is the difference between Sanga and Amla. No offence to Sri Lankan team, but unlike Sanga, Amla is surrounded with so many players who can take the pressure of from him, whereas Sanga had to rescue Sri lanka most of the time and did is successfully....so SANGA deserves all of these than Amla...

Posted by tdslbuwa on (September 15, 2012, 16:50 GMT)

What about Sanga's brilliant century IN Durbun witch helped SL to win that match???what about his match saving 200 against top quality balling of Ajmal,Gul,Rehman at UAE??? what about his match saving 100 against England???Sanga played mysterious Ajmal brilliantly when all the players around the world struggling to pick him...Well that alone is a very good indicator how good he was last year as a test player...congratulations Sanga!!! you deserve all the awards !!!

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 16:48 GMT)

Ajmal just played in Dubai pitch, let him play in England, Australia or south african pitch then judge him, sanga played everywhere, but my judgement is amla played better,

Posted by johnathonjosephs on (September 15, 2012, 16:41 GMT)

Wow Sangakkara, has won the Cricketer of the Year, ODI Player of the Year, and Test Cricketer of the year. Tendulkar has only gotten Cricketer of the Year. He has also been on the Test Team every year since 2006 (except for one year) and has been consistently the Number 1 Ranked Batsman is Tests for like 3-4 years (occassionally losing his place and then regaining his place). What a batsman, he has the same amount of double centuries as Brian Lara and 2 190's, in less matches. He will also be the fastest to 8,000, 9000, and soon 10,000 Test Runs. This guy is unbelievable and one of the best Test Players to grace the game after Bradman

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 16:39 GMT)

WOW......I've seen some positive comments as well as negative comments. All are personal views...What I'm about to post is also personal.......I've seen lot of people use the word "selfish" on players. I would like to ask this two simple questions from them. 1) How many of you have played cricket? 2) How many of you are not selfish? Being selfish or not is also a personal thing. But Mr Sangakkara has been a spirit for the cricket, wonderful to watch player and friendly sportsman....Cricketers from his time will agree with me, not only Sri Lankans....But rest of the playing nations. He did his best in the past and continues to do the same and will do it in the future too. I would like to be on the well wishers side at this moment and congratulate rest of the players and officials who got awarded.

Posted by CricketPissek on (September 15, 2012, 16:35 GMT)

You can't please everybody. I trust the panel knows more about the game than loud commentors here. Congratulations Sanga, it's been a prolific year for you. Just hope 2013 will bring success to the team. We've read the reports now that SL won't play test cricket against any of the top 8 teams from January to December next year, so this may be the last time he'll get this award with his retirement not too far away surely.

Posted by johnathonjosephs on (September 15, 2012, 16:23 GMT)

Congrats to Sangakkara. I am surprised that he got Cricketer of the Year though. Hashim Amla was more prolific in the ODIs than Sanga. It is a bit sad because Philander won nothing. He should have got the emerging players award but he did not. Amla must be thinking what went wrong and what must he do to get recognition, but his time will come very soon for he has the makings of an all time great

Posted by KarachiKid on (September 15, 2012, 16:21 GMT)

Congrats Sanga - he was by far the best player of the period. However, he should thank Pakistan for having let him score big on at least three different innings via dropped catches and also thank some umpires for letting him off on close LBW shouts. Anyway, even without these let offs, his performances were Bradmanesque...As for umpire Dharmasena, I have my strong doubts. I dont think anyone come even close to Aleem Daar. Not even Taufel.

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 16:17 GMT)

@Peter4135 - lol...remember how the English struggled in UAE against Pakistan... Sanga has played Ajmal better than anyone in the last couple of years...and the Aussies struggled against Ajaml in so called flat tracks just last week !!...Check the stats before you comment - Sanga scored test centuries against South Africa in SA and Against England in England during th last year. Salute the legend rather than being jealous

Posted by bestbuddy on (September 15, 2012, 16:05 GMT)

While I have to congratulate Sangakkara, and I feel he did deserve overall cricketer of the year, Test Cricketer of the year should have been Philander, hands down. The fastest man to 50 test wickets in a century, and the fastest man ever to the milestone in terms of balls bowled and yet he got overlooked. Sangakkara set no new records, and did not even average much more than his normal average in that time in test cricket

So the ICC could not create an award for Tendulkar - how lacking in imagination!

Posted by Sakthiivel on (September 15, 2012, 15:46 GMT)

Kohli should thanks Srilanka for his Award. Really they work hard to get him this award.

Elegant and prolific with the bat as well as behind the wicket, in any form of the game of cricket. Most eloquent cricketer ever with a mic at hand. Great attitude towards the game, team, people, and life overall. Has there ever been a better ambassador for the game of cricket?. The people's choice award Sanga has won on top of the other two tells it all. So, let's enjoy cricket ... and hail the legends irrespective of where they are from.

Good deserving candidate for Cricketer year of the year . He had shown good all-round performance in all form of cricket in last one year. Congratulation Sanga you are truly best lot of cricketer from Sri Lanka and truly ambassador for world cricket ... Some how Amla is missing and not got any award which i am not able to digest .. Amla you also deserve these award but great cricketer can not away form award for long time so better luck for next year....

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 15:44 GMT)

Amla surely deserved at least one award. Seems like awards were biased very much towards srilankan players and umpires.

Amla more deserving than Sanga

Posted by WCChamp2011 on (September 15, 2012, 15:37 GMT)

To all who think Amla deserves Test cricketer, remember Sanga is also a wicketkeeper so he has contributed more than the others. Moreover Amla is in a strong team which means he has it easy with less pressure when he comes to bat, not so for Sanga. So in my opinion Sanga deserves the award more

Posted by ponting209 on (September 15, 2012, 15:37 GMT)

Congratulation Kumar Sangakkara on getting the award and keep up the good work sangakara. Well done Sangakara and all the best Sir.

Truly Sanga deserved this. He has been exceptional in all forms of the game in all conditions against all teams. Even Ajmal couldn't contain him in subcontinent pitches. True Amla has been remarkable and perhaps the best of the past few years, but over the voting period, Sanga is the most deserving. Also, Sanga plays at a tougher position and has very few other capable players around him, unlike Amla who has Kallis, AB etc to follow.

yes he truley deserve test cricket of year. only comitetion might have been amla in test player category but he might not have played this much matches. For Crickter of Year award i think ajmal should have been considered as he plays 3 formats but from the short list sanga is good in both tests and odis. not as good in t20 but over all good choice and deserves it.well done

Congratulations to SL and Sanga a gr8 warrior and we pakistanis will not blame him or his team but the jury was really biased . Looking back to a year where pakistan white washed the then no. 1 team in tests did nt get a single award is very unfortunate . Saeed Ajmal should have got atleast test player of the year for his achievement if jury did nt want a pakistani to grab cricketer of the year award . Once again congrats to our very good friendly neighbour on their gr8 achievement .

Posted by bliksempie on (September 15, 2012, 15:20 GMT)

How does Vernon Philander not win Cricketer or Test Cricketer of the Year? His achievements are unmatched in over a hundred years of cricket. Sanga had a good year, but Vern did something no-one had done for over a century. Strange how few bowlers have won Cricketer of the Year, despite universal acknowledgement that it's bowlers who win matches, not batsmen. Only Mitchell Johnson since the award's inception.

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 15:20 GMT)

Amla is No 1 in ODI Rankings for a long time...still award to Virat Kohli and I have watched Kumar Dharamsena, the Umpire adjudged wrong by DRS 4 times in a single match... I dont know who judges these awards..

Not that you won it, you earned it Sanga.... you deserve it for your sportsmanship and hard work

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 15:11 GMT)

* He is the most respected and loved cricketer on the earth, except by few. The major worry is Sanga has already spoken about his retirement and seems that he doesn't wont to block a career of a Youngman though he could play better even at the age of (nearing)40. Could that be another reason why people all over the world love him so much. True sportsman value always country and team first before personal goals and selfishness.

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 15:11 GMT)

Sanga you are a legend to us... We are proud to be Sri lankans... You are the greatest batsman sri lanka has ever produced. to those who said Sanga is a flat track bully - Just see his record in AUS, SA, An UAE this year.... Dont ever hesitate to admire the talent... Kohli too has deserved the ODI award.. its amazing how he played at bellerive... Amla may be had a good year.. but he is not a competitor for sanga... ALL D BEST SANGA>>> WE NEED THAT BRILLIANCE TOO IN WORLD T20... WELL PLAYED KOHLI TOO...

Joke of the century dharmasena becomes umpire of the year

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 15:04 GMT)

Is ICC awards a Joke ? First they leave out Ajmal for the award Now they are giving the Cricketer of the year and Test Player of the year award to Sangakarra. He scored all his runs in Asia and not aginst difficult bowlers Amla , Clarke deserve it much more . Clarke has scored runs everywhere from Dust-bowls of Lanka to Green-tops of South Africa to bouncy-pitches of Australia that too being a captain of a young and developing team His Hundred in South Africa in a particularly difficult pitch against the best bowling attack deserves special recognition along with Dravid's ton in England

Congratulations Sanga, You always make us Proud!

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 15:03 GMT)

Amla should have won it. Sangakara is a good player, but Amla deserved it more.

Posted by suve on (September 15, 2012, 15:01 GMT)

@Ishfaq333: No Way buddy, Clarke got a 300 vs India's poor Bowling attack, Sanga got back to back 190's vs Pakistan with bowlers like Ajmal, Rehman and Gul. Both are great players but Sanga was better this year. Sanga has so many fans around the world as well, thats why he won the players choice award. Btw Dharmasena had something like 98% correct decisions in all formats, so congrats to him too. It's a shame India cannot make a good umpire with soo much people in their country and they make excuses about Sri Lankan Umpires.

weLL desereveD ODI player of the Year ViraT kohLii u deserved it...

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 15:00 GMT)

sanga does not deserve it - most of his runs are in the dead tracks of sri lanka against mediocre teams - what has he ever done against australia, england and south africa in THEIR countries ?? actually the same is true for sri lanka as a whole - god only for the dead spinning tracks of sri lanka.

Posted by Natx on (September 15, 2012, 14:59 GMT)

Congrats Sanga for the awards. Good guy, worthy contributions, deserves it. But I thought that the test cricketer of the year award should have gone to Hashim Amla though for his valuable contribution to the team that helped them to go #1 in the world rankings beating the previous #1 on their home turf. No grudge here, but pure logic.

Dharmasena too has had a good year as an umpire. Mendis definatley deserves it after getting 6 wickets vs Aus. Well done to Kohli, he is the best ODI batsmen now days. Still some Indians talking nonesene, especially when a Sri Lankan does well.

Posted by Nmiduna on (September 15, 2012, 14:48 GMT)

stats doesn't say the whole story..and it doesn't have to count that amla or philander played in more hyped matches..coming from a non-classical test nation and one with little financial importance and limited opportunities make sangakakara's achievements all the more remarkable, and one of the reasons why he is often underrated as late peter roebuck once pointed out. if this award were by any means rigged, sangakkara would be the last person to receive it! Congrats sanga!

Sanga deserves the award of cricketer of the year and test cricketer simply for the amount of matches he has played and for being consistent. It doesnt matter where or how the runs were scored, playing so many games across all three formats and that too with consistent performances in all, needs to be acknowledged.Congratz Sanga and Dharmasena, this is surely one of the moments of SL cricket.

well done sanga..to people think he do not deserves it,they might be not folowing sl cricket.sanga richly deserves it..he made a match saving hundred in england,no.1 then,as stand in captain. Then match winning second innings hundred in SA,no.2 team in the world then,to win us the first test in SA soil. Then he made a match saving double ton against Pakistani attack which ripped through the no.1 teams batting recently.more than 500 runs in that away series. And again another more than 500 run series against Pakistan won us that tour.two back to back 190z including 199 not out batting through the innings. In Odiz he made the most runs of the year by far. Also 3 or 4 ODIz tons made in there as well.Add to that lot of great catches behind the wicket. He deserves it for his fitness as well, did not missed a game for SL for about 3 or 4 years now.

Posted by praveen4honestremark on (September 15, 2012, 14:14 GMT)

Congratulations Sangakkara. Every one is master in their conditions. Sub continent teams play on spin and belter tracks. Other teams play on green tops. If you feel they are superior pitches then you are one eyed fellow. If it is tough for your players to score runs in Sub-continent than same for sub-continent players. When you are no masters in playing sub continent you bring out a concept called "dead pitches". Shame.

Posted by ozwriter on (September 15, 2012, 14:14 GMT)

agree with samantha. amla highest run scorer over 4 years in terms of average, no icc awards. playing more games cannot be a qualification for the award. for some reason india and sri lanka play a huge no. of ODIs compared to SA or england, hence there batsman have more opportunities to score and higher overall scores. look at sangakkara he has 14 ODI centuries in 300+ matches, amla has 10 centuries in only 60 matches. imagine if amla had played 300 matches!!

amla score sa triple century not out to help SA topple england as the worlds best team, and then 150 to secure the seriies. philander has the best international debut ever and one of the fastest to 50 wickets. both of these players on difficult and pressure situations. versus sangakkara, just the usual run of the mill stuff in batsman friendly dead sri lankan pitches. terrible decision!

love you sanga !!!! you deserve !!

Posted by Nmiduna on (September 15, 2012, 14:08 GMT)

just coz other candidates played in more hyped matches and in supposedly stronger teams doesn't make them any more deserving than sanga, infact the very fact that he played the last year with a bunch of youngsters and not so great test players and in a period of rebuild for his team makes his achievements all the more remarkable.Once great peter roebuck argued that if Kallis is great & Ponting's great and Amla's destined to greatness, why sanga is not even mentioned as one of the modern greats.Part of it is that the limited opportunities he get but also a part of it is that he comes from a less financially important country which is not considered a 'classical' test playing nation, evn wen its players perform admirably enough.this selection came from an elite panel representing whole world(first 32 then 5) and if these awards were by some means rigged, Kumar Sangakkara from Sri Lanka will be the last man to receive them... Congratz Sanga:)

this is the answer to all guys who saying amla deserved test award. but the point is sanga won and saved matches single handed than amla.. amla played with same good players like AB ,Kallis , Smith but sanga played alone with out of form players. sanga handled presure more fluently.

to all you people saying amla deserved it more than sangakkara...wrong...amla only scored the one triple and a few hundreds...sangakkara scored many excess scores..as for philander...it is the norm for these awards that the bowler must do something really spectacular..philander almost there...not quite...a better series in england would have vindicated his selection

@Peter. Hashim would be the only other candidate for Test and Cricketer of the year to compare with Sanga. But Amla hasnt played enough matches to determine if he deserved it more. Sangakkara deserved it.

hashim amla - most prolific run scorer in world cricket over the last 4 yrs. zero icc accolades to show for it.

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 13:55 GMT)

yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhooooooo!!!!!!! i am very happyyy ,congrats sanga we are proud of u. u deserve that awards ......

iCC Proves it again making runs on dead wickets is more important then making on bowler friendly.

Great Sanga Brilliant All the best

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 13:54 GMT)

Surely this is peak of Sangakkaras career, doubt he will win again, although Dharmasena shouldnt have won umpire of the year, I have seen his many faulty decisions.

Posted by Muzgrob on (September 15, 2012, 13:54 GMT)

How he deserved it more than Philander or Amla for test cricketer I'll never know.

Posted by Karnain on (September 15, 2012, 13:51 GMT)

Well-done Sanga!! You thoroughly deserve all these awards. Keep up the good work & put your hands on the ICC World T20 next. Cheers!

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 13:51 GMT)

I thought Amla deserved the test cricketer of the year award.

Posted by shah_nawaj on (September 15, 2012, 13:50 GMT)

Amla was more deserving then Sanga....no doubt. But this is the decision of ICC. Virat and Naraine deserved their prize .......

Posted by ozwriter on (September 15, 2012, 13:49 GMT)

i'm a fan of sangakarra but i really dont think he was the best player or best test player during the play periods. just because you play more tests or odis, and therefore score more runs, doesnt make u the most deserving player. philander or amla deserved it more.

Congrats Sanga, you deserved for these two awards and missed the ODI player of the year award by a little margin. Well done, hope you will carry on the great work Good luck!
