Michael Flanagan was born in Ireland and played for them, but was for a number of years on the books of the MCC and the Household Brigade as a professional fast bowler. While there he regularly turned out for Middlesex and MCC. In 1876 he took 9 for 76 for MCC against Surrey.
He may have failed to reach the hundred that was his for the taking but there were shades of Hashim Amla's greatness on display at Trent Bridge
