Donald Goodson played nine matches as an amateur fast bowler for Leicestershire between 1950 and 1953, but aside from taking 3 for 43 against Gloucestershire in his first game of 1953, he made little impression. He then joined the Royal Engineers on a commission and played a fair amount of representative cricket, including taking 5 for 39 for the Army against the Royal Navy at Lord's in 1957, as well as playing for Leicestershire 2nd XI. In 1960 he left the army and emigrated to South Africa where he set up a clothing business as well as playing for the Western province club.
