Eric Meads was one of those unfortunate players who was on the verge of breaking into county cricket when war broke out. He made his one pre-war appearance in August 1939 when many of the Nottinghamshire squad had left to join the forces and he continued to play for them in their war-time matches. Although he resumed his career and went on to play for several years afterwards, his best years had been lost. A wicketkeeper with few pretensions about batting, he immediately won his place in the Nottinghamshire side in 1946, holding it down with no challenge until 1953 when he lost his place to Edmund Rowe, an even worse batsman.
