Donald George Beaumont Roper, who died in Southampton on June 10 after a long illness aged 78, was a right-hand batsman who played much for Southgate and who made a single appearance for his native Hampshire against Cambridge University at Portsmouth in 1947, scoring 30 and 0. Don Roper was much better known as a goal-scoring forward with Southampton and Arsenal.
