Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Warton was a career army man, serving in Japan and South Africa. It was through his connections there that he organised the first English touring side to the Cape in 1888-89. A private venture, two matches against a South Africa XI were only accorded Test status some years later. Warton stood as umpire in the two matches. He retired to Jersey where he lived the last 20 years of his life.
