John Matthews was a middle-order batsman who made five first-class appearances for Scotland between 1951 and 1958 without any success. He was unfortunate in that his time at Cambridge University coincided with the war when they played a much-reduced fixture list and the annual match against Oxford University was restricted to a one-day non first-class game. He played in the match in 1941 and 1942, captaining them in the second year and scoring 68 as an opening batsman. He was a consultant physician.
