Profile

Sam Wells' call-up to the New Zealand Test squad in 2012 was such a surprise that initially even his girlfriend didn't believe him. An allrounder who cemented his place in the Otago side in the 2009-10 season, Wells himself thought it would take longer for him to be elevated to the Test level. A left-hand batsman and right-arm medium-pacer, he averaged almost 60 with the bat in that breakthrough season and collected 21 wickets as well. He described his role in the team as someone who "bats around seven or eight and bowls 12-15 overs a day". He is something of a first-class specialist, and has struggled to get a sustained run in Otago's limited-overs sides. He has a law degree from Otago University, but is yet to take the bar exam.
