Profile

Steve Gatting turned out a few times for Middlesex 2nd XI but made his mark as a professional footballer. He started at Arsenal where he established himself as a regular in 1978-79 and was unfortunate to miss out on that season's FA Cup final. In 1981 he moved to Brighton & Hove Albion, making over 300 appearances for them in almost decade, and in 1983 he was in the side that lost to Manchester United in the FA Cup final - and were also relegated. He finished his career at Charlton Athletic where he retired in 1993. He remained in the game as a coach. His son, Joe, followed him into football at Brighton but switched to cricket when offered a chance at Sussex.
