A left-arm fast/medium bowler with lots of potential, Martyn has been plagues by injuries. A good 1993/94 season, partnering Meyrick Pringle with the new ball and representation for South Africa A against England A, earned Martyn a spot in the South African touring party to the UK in 1994. Unfortunately a serious side strain ruled him out of the tour and ruined his chances of an international career. Since recovering, Martyn has maintained his consistent performances for WP in the four-day game, but the national selectors have shown a preference for the now fit Brett Schultz - Martyn's WP team-mate and rival left-arm quick bowler.
