- It was the 1717th ODI in cricket history.
- It was West Indies' 423rd and South Africa's 228th match.
- It was the 24th match between these two sides. The record now reads: South Africa 17, West Indies 7.
- Umpires Steve Bucknor and CR Duncan were officiating in their 82nd and 10th match respectively. Bucknor is now only one short of equalling Lloyd Barker's record of officiating in most matches in West Indies.
- Andre Nel was making his ODI debut. He became 65th player to represent South Africa in this form of cricket.
- Corey Collymore became 17th player to appear for West Indies in this series. Only twice before West Indies had selected more players in a series (or tournament). In 1977-78 West Indies made use of 19 players in two match series against Australia. However that was the first ever series for West Indies at home and as many as 11 players were making their ODI debut in that series. In 1997-98 West Indies once again selected 19 players in five match home series against England. On two other occasions West Indies has engaged 17 players in a series (or tournament) v Australia in 1983-84 and in World Series Cup in 1996-97. Just to put West Indies' record in right perspective, the world record of most players representing a side in a series is held by India as it used 23 players in Coca Cola Triangular Series in 1997-98.
- Brian Lara was getting run-out for the 11th time in his ODI career. This was also the 34th instance for him when he ran out himself or his partner - a new West Indian record. The previous record was of 33 such instances jointly held by Richie Richardson and Carl Hooper. The details:

- The wicket of Collymore was 50th for Shaun Pollock as South Africa's skipper. He was playing his 35th match. Pollock became second South African after Hansie Cronje and only the eighth player in all ODIs to do so. The accompanying table has the details:

- The four dismissals (three catches and one stumping) by Mark Boucher equalled the existing South African record of most dismissals by a keeper in a match against West Indies. Boucher had also held four catches at Durban on 27-01-1999.
- Boucher has now also equalled the record of most dismissals by a keeper in a match against West Indies in West Indies. India's Saba Karim had also held three catches and effected one stumping at Port-of-Spain on 27-04-1997.
- Hooper has now led West Indies in 10 matches and faced defeat in nine of them - a success rate of 10.00 %. Among the 67 players who have captained their respective sides in at least 10 matches only three have the worse success rate than Hooper. The details :
