Leeward Islands captain Kieran Powell struck his maiden List A century, finishing with 105 off 122 balls to lead his side past West Indies U-19 by 88 runs at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. The achievement for Powell comes in his first full season back on the West Indies domestic circuit following a failed attempt to transition to baseball.
Powell's previous List A best in 55 matches prior to Friday was a score of 83, but his century anchored Leewards against the West Indies junior side as they finished 245 all out after being sent in. Wicketkeeper Jahmar Hamilton was the next best contribution with 28 at No. 5 and he teamed with Powell for the best stand of the innings, 65 runs for the fourth wicket. But when he and Powell fell, it triggered a collapse with the last six wickets going for 44 runs. Keemo Paul dismissed Powell and added three more wickets to finish with 4 for 42.
In reply, West Indies U-19 were bowled out for 157 as Nkrumah Bonner took 3 for 30 to lead the way for Leewards in the field. Four batsmen were dismissed without scoring in the innings as West Indies U-19 struggled to mount a challenge though Shamar Springer top scored with 54 off 67 balls.
In the late match at Coolidge, Trinidad & Tobago scraped past Windward Islands by two wickets. Windwards posted a stiff total of 266 for 7 with Darren Sammy providing a boost late by hitting an unbeaten 60 off 36 balls. Sunil Ambris had earlier struck his second straight half-century for Windwards by top scoring with 69 while Ravi Rampaul took 4 for 43 with the ball for Trinidad & Tobago.
Evin Lewis got the chase off to a terrific start, striking a half-century off just 32 balls as Trinidad & Tobago raced through the Powerplay before Lewis fell for 64 in the 11th to end a 94-run opening partnership with Kyle Hope. Jason Mohammed entered soon after at No. 4 and steered the chase almost through to the end, making 80 until he was the sixth wicket to fall, edging Kyle Mayers behind to Ambris at the start of the 45th over with 22 needed to win. Mayers and Ambris teamed up for two more wickets to put Trinidad & Tobago on edge but Roshon Primus hit the winning runs with two overs to spare.
