Reeza Hendricks, who had been dropped for the last two games, has been recalled and will join up with the national side ahead of the fourth ODI in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday.
After being left out for the first three ODIs, Amla, Aiden Markram and JP Duminy were added to the squad for the last two games, leaving Reeza Hendricks and Wiaan Mulder out.
"Hashim has asked to be excused from the last two ODI's of the current series against Sri Lanka on compassionate grounds since his dad is currently critically ill," Mohammed Moosajee, the South Africa team manager, said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Hashim and his family during this difficult time and we understand that family obligations always come first.
"The selectors have decided to add Reeza Hendricks to the squad. He arrived yesterday evening. It was always the intention of the selectors to rotate Hashim and Reeza during this Sri Lanka ODI series."
