With South Africa already out of reckoning for a semi final place, and with Sri Lanka needing to win this encounter this match soon took on added significance.
The South Africans were determined to give the Sri Lankans a decent total to chase, and tried to keep the scoreboard ticking. But, in doing so the South Africans lost wickets at regular interval and paid dearly with the attendant penalties.
South Africa ended their innings on 38, with Steve Elworthy getting 23 and Allan Donald getting 12 in the process. For Sri Lanka Aravinda DeSilva ended with bowling figures of two for 26 and Mahela Jayawardene one for 40.
Sri Lanka realizing the importance of winning this match were careful not only to get the required runs, but to do so without losing any wickets in the process. This they did as they reached 66 at the end of eight overs and without any loss of wickets. Jayawardene finished on 37 and DeSilva on 26. Bowling for South Africa, Donald ended with figures of none for 23 and Elworthy none for 42.
