Australia's ruthless domination of all the other teams in international cricket has often made people wonder about how they would fare if pitted against the best players from the rest of the world. Come 2005, and cricket fans might actually get to see a Test match between Australia and the Rest of the World.

Announcing the concept of the Super Series, Malcolm Speed, the chief executive of the ICC, stated that the Cricket Committee - Management (CC-M) have proposed that the leading team in the ICC Test Championship table play a one-off Test against a Rest of the World XI. That will be followed by a three-match one-day series, where the top team in the ICC one-day championship table would take on the Rest of the World.

Mr Speed stressed that this event still remained in the planning stages. "While the idea for an ICC Super Series has been agreed, there remains much work to be done to see if this idea can become a reality. At this stage we are continuing to look at the considerable financial, planning and logistical issues that go along with such an event to see if it is practical to stage this tournament."

If things went according to plan, the first such series would be played in South Africa in September 2005.
