A strong Pakistan side beat Sri Lanka in both limited-overs internationals at Sharjah in March 1989 to win the Sharjah Cup and also avenge the defeat by Sri Lanka which had cost them a place in the final of the Asia Cup in Bangladesh earlier in the season. Abdul Qadir, who injured his left hand in the first match, while attempting to hold a return catch, and took no further part in the competition, was the major beneficiary of the Cricketers' Benefit Fund Series. The minor beneficiary was the Pakistan selector, Salah-ud-Din, who played in five Test matches in the 1960s.
