Richard Snell: RHB, RFM b. 12/9/68 As a nineteen year old Snell took South African cricket by storm -- a brisk fast-medium bowler who swung the ball copiously both ways, his promise seemed unlim- ited. For unknown reasons he lost his main weapon (the in- swinger), however, and consequently suffered through several dis- astrous one-day internationals, and a dysmal season with Somer- set. His rehabilitation has as much to do with complementary words spoken by the West Indian captain as with a resurgence in his bowling. He was instrumental in several exciting one-day vic- tories for his provincial side in 1993, but was still ominously expensive in such matches. His batting is hugely frustrating: he has the technique to become a true all-rounder, but manages to fail whenever it really matters. Snell is a reliable outfielder.
