Tim Welsford from Northcote in Melbourne had one of those matches you dream of today at De Soysa Park, Moratuwa. His performance was instrumental in Australia's qualification to the semi-finals.
Following on from his 70 against New Zealand in their practice game. he top scored in this match with a fine 30. It may not sound a great deal but in the context of such a low scoring game it was invaluable.
His chief contribution though was with the ball. Bowling stump to stump on a wicket that was keeping very low he picked 5-22 off his ten overs. Four of his wickets were LBWs - testimony to his immaculate line. He is not a particularly fast bowler, but moves the ball in the air and is accurate.
Speaking after the game to CRICINFO his coach Rod Marsh paid tribute to his performance. ``He is a good cricketer and he had a fine match today. He batted pretty soundly, bowled stump to stump and just kept on getting LBWs. He has been handy when he has been given the new ball throughout the tournament, picking up a couple of wickets each time.''
Sri Lanka editor When Charlie Austin left for Sri Lanka after graduating from Sussex University, he was a planning a winter's cricket in the tropics and a six-month stint with an environmental NGO. His mother's worst fears were soon realised when it became clear that he had fallen in love with the island. Six months have now become eight years and Colombo has become his home. He joined Cricinfo in February 2000 and now heads operations in Sri Lanka, responsible for both sales and editorial. He is also the director of a UK-based travel company called Red Dot Tours, and is currently ghosting Muttiah Muralitharan's autobiography.
